Incoming Georgia Southern freshman Emme Walrath took the gold medal at the 2024 USA National Junior Olympic Championships for smalbore Friday evening just two says after taking silver in air rifle Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Walrath, who signed with Georgia Southern in November, entered the smallbore competition in second place after two days, but used strong scores in kneeling and prone to stay close to the top of the leaderboard before surging late in standing to beat TCU's Kaite Zaun. In air rifle, she led after the first day of competition and put up another strong performance on the second day to easily make the eight-shooter final where she finished a close second. |

For this U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit team member, the Paris Games will be a first shot at Olympic Gold. Sgt. Ivan Roe qualified to represent the United States in both air rifle and three-position rifle this summer in his Olympic debut.
According to Roe, who placed first in the final round of three-position rifle Olympic Trials held at Fort Moore [aka Benning] in March, his success comes from trusting in his training process.
“I obviously had a lot of thoughts going through my head, it’s a big mental hurdle to know that you are competing for an Olympic spot on the line,” Roe said. |

Police Department Officer Jason Webster said the sight of a shotgun and the sound it makes when being engaged to shoot is enough to clear a crowd.
One of the final sessions of the BPD Citizens Academy involved gun safety and the opportunity to shoot live rounds on Saturday.
Officer Webster, and Officer Josiah Gnann, both instructors for the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, discussed firearm features, legal issues and proper use and storage of weapons with the class.
The session diverted from the usual Tuesday evening meeting time and met Saturday. After classroom instruction at the BPD the class made its way to Big Hollow to the shooting range. |

Gov. Ron DeSantis has come out firing against President Joe Biden’s move to close the so-called “gun show loophole,” framing the executive action as a misrepresentation of the issue, an attack on Second Amendment rights to firearms, and certain to be struck down by the judiciary.
In St. Augustine, DeSantis said he expects the order to “be challenged immediately and … will end up getting nixed,” with the executive action being mere “window dressing” in lieu of legislative authorization. |

For the past few years, guns have been identified as the leading cause of death for children in the United States.
There were 2,571 children aged 1 to 17 who died in shootings in the U.S. in 2021, 68% more than the 1,531 that occurred in 2000.
To help reduce the number of firearm-related deaths and injuries among children, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona called upon school and district administrators in January to talk with parents and guardians about safe firearm storage practices.

Gun control advocates, including families of mass shooting survivors, condemned Tennessee Senate Republicans for a 26-5 vote along party lines on Tuesday to advance legislation allowing teachers and staff to carry concealed firearms in public schools.

An 85-year-old Idaho woman shot and killed an intruder in her home in what a county prosecutor called "one of the most heroic acts of self-preservation I have ever heard of."
Bingham County Prosecutor Ryan Jolley, in a case review, said that the woman, identified Wednesday as Christine Jenneiahn, acted in self-defense and ruled it was a case of justifiable homicide.
"That Christine survived this encounter is truly incredible," Jolley wrote in the review. "Her grit, determination, and will to live appear to be what saved her that night." |

A firearms advocacy group and three people who live in Pennsylvania, Idaho and New Mexico filed a lawsuit Thursday in San Diego federal court challenging a state law that mostly bans non-California residents from carrying guns in the state.
The lawsuit alleges that the regulation violates the Second Amendment and 14th Amendment and should be overturned. It claims the law is “unconstitutionally restrictive” and bars the plaintiffs from carrying guns in California even though each have been issued concealed-carry permits in their home states. |

Senate Republicans are proceeding with two proposals from Senator John Stevens (R-Huntington) to amend the Tennessee Constitution to strengthen Tennesseans’ Second Amendment rights.
Senate Joint Resolution 904 advanced to protect citizens’ right to bear arms in the Tennessee Constitution and limit the legislature’s ability to pass restrictive gun laws. The measure proposes to replace the current constitutional provision that authorizes the legislature to “regulate the wearing of arms with a view to prevent crime” and instead state that “citizens have a right to keep, bear and wear arms.” |

We’ve reported in recent months how several states are considering or have passed legislation forbidding credit card companies from using a special Merchant Category Code (MCC) for gun purchases that would basically create a registry of guns bought by Americans. Now, a U.S. Senator from Tennessee has introduced federal legislation along the same lines.

Unless successfully challenged in court, the ATF will use its agents to enforce the new rule, as they did when they murdered Arkansas man Bryan Malinowski, who, according to the ATF, bought and sold too many guns privately. The ATF arrived at Malinowski’s home before dawn on March 19 with at least 10 vehicles containing fully armed and swatted agents, and within minutes Malinowski lay dying from bullet wounds. |

Several hours later, lawmakers rejected the sixth bill on the group’s priority list.
Senate Bill 593, which failed in the Senate, 14-9, along party lines, would have prohibited guns on school grounds and buses. State law prohibits drugs but not firearms on school grounds.
That leaves just one gun safety bill still in play: House Bill 1711, a bipartisan effort to add certain mental health records to gun background checks. While federal law prohibits anyone who has been committed to a psychiatric facility from buying or possessing a gun, New Hampshire does not submit the mental health records that would identify those individuals. |

Gun rights advocates gave their opinions on Savannah's new city law regarding guns in cars.
On Thursday, Savannah City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that makes it a crime to leave an unsecured and visible gun in an unlocked car.
According to the city, more than 80% of guns left unlocked and accessible in cars lead them to being stolen and used in crimes. That's why city council hopes the new law will decrease crime. |
