Wadeck said the victim's romantic partner joined in, pushing Wadeck from behind and causing her to fall to the ground. She was then choked and stomped on until she freed herself and retreated to her bedroom, Wadeck said, at which point she caught her breath, found her gun and placed it in her back pants pocket.

Wadeck alleged she went in search of her shoes so she could leave the house when the victim attacked her again, at which point she pulled out the gun and blindly shot forward, hitting the victim who fell to the floor.

This time, the victim was a young Black servicemember who carried his legally owned handgun to the door of his apartment after hearing banging noises that ended up being a sheriff’s deputy. The officer — and not Fortson — opened fire within seconds. His supervisors say he acted in self-defense.

Fortson’s legal team was quick to remind the world of his Second Amendment rights in a state that helped popularize “Stand Your Ground” laws after the killing of Trayvon Martin more than a decade ago.

“They teach us in law school about the sanctity of the home, in the United States of America, and how that is your safe haven. That is your castle,” civil rights attorney Ben Crump said at a press conference with Fortson’s relatives last week.

Let’s restore the Second Amendment in its entirety by focusing on the words we have for so long ignored, “a well regulated militia.”

First, we must all understand what the framers meant by militia. It was not just any group of good old boys getting together with their guns and declaring they were a militia.

No, militia were groups of citizen soldiers enlisted by the state or local government, trained and regulated by those local authorities, who could be called upon in times of crisis.

In today’s society, this function is most nearly aligned to our National Guard, and an argument can be made that this is the only proper interpretation of militia in our modern world.

Democrats recently brought forward an incredibly controversial piece of gun legislation that people should know about. It creates a new “binary trigger ban.” Despite the fact that Minnesota already prohibits machine guns, similar automatic weapons, and conversion kits, the bill they brought forward expands the definition of “trigger activator” to include binary triggers, and it now states Minnesotans can no longer own guns with that feature.

This bill goes into effect on January 1, 2025, and gives legal gun owners no time to get rid of their now “illegal” guns.

"It kind of left us no choice in filing the ERPO (Extreme Risk Protection Order). So, if you want to call me a flip-flopper or typical politician, whatever you want to call me, that's fine. I have thick skin. I've been in the business a long time."

Sheriff Murphy still does not support red flag laws, and hopes legal challenges will change it.

"It's a very complicated issue, number one. Number two, if you read the Constitution, the Second Amendment, it's very short. I'm paraphrasing, but it says everybody has the right to bear arms and the government shouldn't infringe on that."

Outdoor Life’s annual gun test is unrivaled among our peer group in the industry, and testing the best handguns is a huge part of that. For this evaluation, we gather all the new handguns that we can get, shoot them for accuracy, then run the living piss out of them. With that, we get to see which guns rise to the top, and we are nearly always surprised by some guns — for better and worse.

If you carry a gun Brusic says don't ever think about pulling your gun to threaten someone unless you feel your life is in danger. In other words don't take out your gun until you are prepared to use it. Brusic looks closely at whether you could have walked away rather than confronting the person who was threatening? It's that kind of question prosecutors will ask if you ever do pull the trigger and injure or kill someone.

Today, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), along with 41 of their Senate Republican colleagues, introduced a joint resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act to strike down the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) rule on the definition of “Engaged in the Business” as a Dealer in Firearms. The rule ignores the law and congressional intent and flagrantly violates the Constitution to try to require anyone who sells a firearm to register as a federal firearm licensee.

Ed.: Cornyn shouldn't have voted for for the law causing these problems in the first place.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and other Senate Republicans recently introduced legislation that would abolish transfer taxes on firearms regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA).

The bill, called the Repealing Illegal Freedom and Liberty Excises (RIFLE) Act, was announced on Wednesday. According to a press statement released by Cotton, the law "would remove a burdensome tax imposed on firearms regulated under the National Firearms Act."

The press release explains that the NFA has taxed the transfers of short-barreled shotguns and rifles and fully automatic firearms since 1934. The tax has been $200 since 1934, a sum that is equal to nearly $4,700 in 2024 dollars.

House Bill 433, sponsored by Rep. Willis Blackshear (D-Dayton), prohibits a person from knowingly acquiring, having, carrying, or using any mass casualty weapon. In the bill, a mass casualty weapon is defined as “any semi-automatic firearm designed or specially adapted to fire more than 31 cartridges without reloading, other than a firearm chambering only .22 caliber short, long, or long-rifle cartridges.”

“It is so broad of a definition that it will encompass every single semi-automatic gun known to man other than the very small .22 long rifle caliber,” Williams said. “You’re not going to be able to ban every single gun that Ohioans possess and think it going to pass a constitutional challenge.”

One of the biggest think tanks in Washington, DC is gearing up to oppose the Biden Administration’s plan to restrict firearm exports.

Heritage Action, the 501(c)(4) arm of the right-leaning Heritage Foundation, announced a plan on Wednesday to motivate activists to comment in opposition to the Commerce Department’s rule pairing back the ability for American companies to export guns. The group said it is hoping to “activate millions of grassroots conservatives” in an effort to have the rule withdrawn. It told The Reload it plans to start by reaching out to activists with digital communications and in person at the NRA’s Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas this weekend.

Thinking of traveling this summer? You’re not alone. Millions and millions of people hit the road or take to the not-so-friendly skies when the kids get out of school. But, what if you want to take your gun along? Can you? In this article, I want to tell you that you probably can, but there are a few things you need to know.

To those of us who regularly travel the country (and maybe even beyond) with our firearms, this article might seem a little silly. But, when I was instructing full time, I frequently had students who thought they couldn’t leave the state with their gun, or thought it was too big of a pain to bother with (especially for air travel).

"Alabamians won't need to worry that 'woke' Wall Street banks, credit card companies and payment processors will collude with government entities to spy on their private finances for exercising their rights," Keane said.

In addition to eliminating merchant codes, which financial institutions use to track goods and services, the law also prohibits any list or registry of privately owned guns. "No American should fear being placed on a government watchlist simply for exercising their Constitutionally-protected rights to keep and bear arms," Keane added.

About nine times a day over two decades, a gun used in a crime has been traced back to its original owner: a law enforcement agency.

A joint investigation by CBS News, The Trace, and Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting has found at least 52,000 such incidents and identified more than 140 police agencies that sell or trade in their guns, allowing dealers to then resell them.

In Illinois, 114,000 people are banned from owning guns because of legal tangles or mental health issues — three-quarters of them haven't surrendered their firearms, according to data the Cook County sheriff will present Thursday.

Sheriff Tom Dart is seeking $10 million from state lawmakers to tackle what he calls in naming the report “A Firearm Regulation Crisis." The money would train and equip more door-knocking officers to retrieve or ensure the safe storage of weapons from those who have had their state Firearm Owners Identification cards rescinded.

A report from Everytown, a nonprofit working to fight gun violence in the United States, says the rate at which guns are being stolen from cars nationally has tripled over the last decade.

Despite that report, the Cedar Rapids Police Department is observing a downward trend, with only seven incidents in 2024.

The CRPD says while the rate has doubled since 2014 there has been a drop-off starting about a year ago.

“They’re higher from a 10-year average, but they are starting to go down, which is always good,” Sgt. Jennifer Roberts with the CRPD said. “We would like to see those numbers continue to go down.”

More than 112,000 Illinois residents have been deemed too dangerous to own guns, but the state doesn’t know if 84,000 of those people still have them, according to a new analysis by the Cook County sheriff’s department.

The number lays bare a public safety risk that authorities have warned about for years, as the state remains unable to ensure that people surrender their weapons after their firearm owner’s identification cards have been suspended.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government that is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. — JAMES MADISON
