"Every law and every election is useful. We were promised that criminals would stop using firearms in Washington State. In theory, criminals would stop using guns because they could not pass the new mandatory background check. In practice the new law didn’t stop crime at all. Armed robberies continue in Seattle. I’m sure you’re stunned, but armed bank robberies continue in Tacoma too. Crime didn’t even slow down after the initiative went into effect. Who would have imagined that violent criminals wouldn’t obey the next gun law!? I’m sure the naive Washington voter is shocked." ...

“If you only follow news in the Left wing echo chamber, you might be tempted to think that Americans have begun turning their backs on gun ownership. Whenever there is one smidgen of data to suggest a decline in sales, the media will latch onto it as proof of a larger trend. The most recent example was when Virginia saw a slight decrease in background checks following three years of exponential growth. … Time Magazine, just last summer, went so far as to list guns as one of the ten things people just aren’t buying anymore. (Along with cereal, gum and … bread. Really?) But is there any truth to this? …”

“The NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action takes a look at the actual figures and finds the claims to be less than substantive.” …

“I saw this morning that Donald Trump has lambasted the French for their strict gun control laws, stating that, ‘If the people so violently shot down in Paris had guns, at least they would have had a fighting chance.’”

“He’s right, to a point, but he doesn’t understand the basic fact that French citizens don’t want a fighting chance. That’s too much personal responsibility for them to bear.”

“For the French to have ‘a fighting chance,’ Trump would first have to get it into the heads of French civilians that armed self-defense is something imperative to the security of both their nation, and imperative to the security of their individual lives. As a culture, they refuse to consider that possibility …” …

“Like his boss, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg , John Feinblatt is a data guy.”

“Mr. Feinblatt used his number-crunching skills at City Hall to help make agencies more efficient, and served as Mr. Bloomberg’s point person on criminal justice, immigration and gay marriage.”

“And now, as president of the Bloomberg group Everytown for Gun Safety, he is taking the same approach to a state-by-state, town-by-town fight to change gun laws.”

“A year after the mayor left office, the group says it has more than 2.5 million supporters and 40,000 donors. It uses algorithms to identify elections—and target voters—that could swing on the gun issue.” …

"As a child fascinated by guns, my best friend and I made toy weapons in his father’s shop, often using them in games of 'war.' As an officer in the Army, I got first-hand knowledge about the danger of arms such as assault rifles and their cruel capacity to kill."

"One of my first jobs upon return to civilian life was being a police reporter, which confirmed the damage firearms create when in the wrong hands. That was before the gun industry managed to sell 'assault rifles' to the general public, creating large profits while making life in America less safe." ...

"This weekend, millions of supporters of freedom of expression turned out in Paris, Utah's French ex-pats gathered on Capitol Hill and on social media Utahns boiled over with outrage following the Charlie Hebdo massacre. It was a right and necessary thing to do."

"But in this moment of solidarity, Utah free-speech supporters seemed to have forgotten our state's recent shameful failure in protecting the right of freedom of expression in the face of terrorism." ...

"A group of armed robbers enter a gun store. No, this isn’t a joke, but it should be – because that’s probably the last place a criminal should ever try to rob. According to The Kansas City Star:

“The co-owner of a Shawnee gun store was fatally shot and three suspects were wounded during an attempted robbery Friday afternoon. The gunfight broke out after four robbers entered She’s A Pistol ( www.shesapistol.com/ ), at 57th Street…according to Shawnee police.”

It was open season after one of the armed men struck co-owner Becky Bieker in the face. Shots were fired, one of which fatally wounded Becky’s husband, and co-owner, Jon Bieker. All told, there were multiple, severe injuries, mostly on the part of the attackers." ...

“Tuesday, Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced H.R. 86, the Safe Students Act, which would repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990.”

“The bill, originally introduced by Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) in 2007, repeals the Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA) of 1990, which makes it ‘unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.’ In 1995, the Supreme Court held the GFSZA unconstitutional, which prompted Congress to amend the bill in 1996. The Supreme Court has not ruled on the constitutionality of the amended Act.” …

"On two hot-button issues that emerge in almost every legislative session — abortion and guns — experts believe there will be more action on guns this time around."

"While some Second Amendment proponents want to repeal Texas’ ban on open carrying of handguns, Jones of Rice University said GOP leaders may find it easier to pass long-stalled legislation to allow concealed-handgun permit holders to bring their weapons onto college campuses." ...

“It may be an exaggeration to say that some Michigan lawmakers want to arm abusers.”

“But not by much.”

“Michigan's Legislature has approved a law, ostensibly aimed at standardizing the way concealed-weapons permits are issued, that also eliminates a state provision barring individuals subject to a personal protection order from obtaining such permits.”

“Personal protection orders, also called restraining orders, are typically issued by a court when there's reason to believe a person is in danger. The subject of the order is generally barred from contacting the threatened person, visiting the person's home or place of employment, stalking or assaultive behavior. …” …

“A Manhattan lawmaker will take another stab at changing a knife law that has led to the arrest of as many as 60,000 people in New York City over the last ten years and drawn criticism from all over the legal community.”

“Assemblyman Dan Quart will introduce a bill today to adjust the language of the state law, which was originally passed in the 1950s and was aimed at a switchblade-like weapon called a ‘gravity knife.’ In recent years the law has been enforced almost exclusively in New York City, where it has been used to arrest thousands of suspects carrying commonly available pocketknives. Construction workers, artists, and many others who use pocketknives for work have found themselves caught up in the aggressive enforcement.” …

"Utah gun laws are considered some of the more permissive in the country. The state’s dearth of legislation on firearm regulations is intended to protect citizen’s Second Amendment rights. Utah's towns and cities are strictly bound to be uniform with state legislation ..."

"According to Utah code:
’All authority to regulate firearms is reserved to the state except where the Legislature specifically delegates responsibility to local authorities or state entities.’”
”When Park City enacted its own regulations that exceeded the reach of state laws, a Second Amendment advocacy group was quick to call them on it. Eventually, city officials voted to repeal the measures." ...

“Attorney General Brad Schimel has added his support to a gun-rights lawsuit seeking to overturn San Francisco's requirement that firearms stored in private homes be locked.”

“The ‘friend of the court’ brief filed by the state of Nebraska and now joined by Wisconsin asks the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower court decision that upheld the San Francisco ordinance.”

“Wisconsin is the 26th state to add its support to the challenge. In a statement, Schimel called it a ‘significant’ constitutional issue that could define the Second Amendment's right to bear arms.” …

“Who should decide whether Californians may legally carry a concealed weapon?”

“Here’s where it stands right now: The state Legislature handed off the decision to local law enforcement officials, federal judges are divided, the California attorney general wants to weigh in, and the U.S. Supreme Court may yet override all of them.”

“California lawmakers have made it generally illegal to carry a gun, open or concealed, loaded or unloaded, in public places. However, state law allows individuals to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon if they take a firearms training course, demonstrate ‘good moral character’ and show ‘good cause’ for the permit to be issued.” …

"Since the resounding defeat of the Democrats in the November elections, and the national polls showing that the majority of Americans do not want to see any new gun control measures enacted, many liberals are having a 'meltdown.' Many Missoula liberals have decided that if you can't win in the elections, then bash those that stand up for the Bill of Rights and the Second Amendment, i.e., Gary Marbut." ...

"Jargon and slogans are popular at tea parties these days, and one of the more frequently heard and seen mottos is: Take back the Constitution."

"Now, some of us didn’t realize the Constitution had been stolen or lost or borrowed. Apparently, though, other Americans (Tea Partyists, conservatives and libertarians, for the most part) are concerned that’s happened. They want the written framework of our government 'returned.'"

"Which begs the questions: What is it these folks want to take back? And how many of them — heck, how many Americans in general — know much about this important document? A variety of surveys and studies spanning several years indicate most us don’t know that much about the Constitution." ...

"Liberals have a habit of basing their opinions on emotion and conservatives on constitutional principles, and never the two shall meet. A recent letter regarding the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (“The SAFE Act has made New Yorkers safer,” Dec. 14) is a case in point."

"As far as I know, not one crime has been prevented by the SAFE Act. Criminals do not obey laws. The only folks charged under the act have been law-abiding citizens caught with prohibited items."

"However, after seven years of practice, along with attending a program offered by the Osceola County 4-H, he has become a much better shot."

"'I wasn’t the best shot but I was getting better each week,' Ryan said."

"Ryan’s parents, Mark and Lisa, said the program has been very effective because the instructors give each student individualized attention that focuses on their strengths and weaknesses."

"Lead instructor Jack Adriance said the air rifle program is one of the oldest programs offered by the Osceola County 4-H." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY
