A car burglary suspect is dead and Broward Sheriff’s detectives say they are investigating whether the Tamarac resident who shot him will face charges or whether this was a case of self-defense. “The state attorney’s office will ultimately determine whether charges should be filed,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said at the shooting scene Saturday morning. |

A bill pending in the Tennessee State House of Representatives would forbid funds from the state being used to enforce federal restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms. Proposed as an amendment to current state law, the legislation (House Bill 1407) “prohibits the expenditure of state or local funds or employees to implement, regulate, or enforce any federal law or executive order regulating the ownership or possession of firearms or firearm ammunition regardless of whether the expenditure of funds or use of employees would violate a state law or the state constitution.” |

An annual hunting and rifle gun show brought close to 1,000 gun enthusiasts of all ages out to the Nescopeck Municipal Volunteer Fire Company on Saturday for a chance to buy guns and other equipment and to enjoy time spent with other sportsmen. Bob Hettinger, president of the Nescopeck Hunting and Rifle Club, sponsor of the two-day show, was on hand to not only direct attendees, but to provide a historical backdrop of the event and the club. |

About 100 gun rights supporters rallied on the steps of the Capitol building in Olympia on Friday, Jan. 12. Most held signs and many carried pistols, rifles or knives. “This is the safest day to be at the capitol,” Senator Phil Fortunato, R-Enumclaw said. A long list of speakers, mostly Republican, voiced opposition to legislation they say would limit or eliminate their rights to bear arms. They called on lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to halt gun regulation bills. |

A Texas Tech student's school spirit got her in a bit of trouble. Diana Durkin, a 19-year-old from Houston, is a sophomore at Texas Tech with a lot of Red Raider pride. So much, in fact, that when she saw someone in the airport security line wearing a Tech sweatshirt, she made the "guns up" salute with her hand as a show of solidarity, she told the Houston Chronicle. |

A Pennsylvania woman was arrested in 2013 when she told police on the Atlantic City Expressway that she was carrying a gun and had a permit to do so. That made her concealed carrying of a weapon legal in her home state, but not in New Jersey with its stricter gun controls. She faced up to five years in prison. The mother of two spent 48 days in jail and a zealous Atlantic County prosecutor denied her pretrial intervention for nearly a year — even as many other tourists visiting New Jersey routinely are allowed that to avoid prosecution for inadvertently violating the state’s Graves Act.

The most recent attack on the president is designed to throw him off balance during the debate on immigration. Senator Durbin, doing his best Claude Rains imitation, stated, "I cannot believe that, in the history of the White House, in that Oval Office, any president has ever spoken the words that I personally heard our president speak yesterday." Durbin was responding to Trump's alleged comment that Haiti, El Salvador, and certain African countries are "s---holes." Many of the reports omit mention of El Salvador because it does not fit the anti-black allegations. |

To a non-hunter, the difference between a crossbow and compound bow may seem nuanced. They both shoot arrows. They’re both called bows. But to those who favor one over the other, those nuances are profound. Crossbows hold an arrow back in the ready position, complete with a safety, scope and trigger. Compound bows – which resemble a higher-tech version of what early humans hunted with – require a hunter to pull a string back and hold it there until letting go. Compound bows are effective for the average hunter until about 40 to 50 yards. New crossbows tout accuracy up to 100. |

Competitive shooter Julie Golob has released a new book that draws on some of the messaging from the Eddie Eagle GunSafe program in providing a short book to teach young children about gun safety. The book is called “Toys, Tools, Guns & Rules,” and Golob, in a YouTube video, explains that she was inspired by her own situation of having two young children in her home. Having grown up in a gun-owning family, and continuing that tradition in her own home, Golob wrote the book as a simple way to get the message to children that guns are tools and one needs to be safe around them.
