The Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday advanced fast-tracked legislation designed to overhaul and streamline the process for obtaining a concealed pistol permit in Michigan.

The two-bill package, introduced earlier the same day, removed controversial language regarding personal protection orders that led Republican Gov. Rick Snyder to veto a previous version this month.

“It’s gone,” Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville, said in testimony before the committee.

The committee advanced the main concealed carry proposal in a 4-0-1 vote.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives collaborated on plans to monitor gun show attendees using automatic license plate readers, according to a newly disclosed DEA email obtained by the ACLU through the Freedom of Information Act.
The April 2009 email states that “DEA Phoenix Division Office is working closely with ATF on attacking the guns going to [redacted] and the gun shows, to include programs/operation with LPRs at the gun shows.” The government redacted the rest of the email, but when we received this document we concluded that these agencies used license plate readers to collect information about law-abiding citizens attending gun shows.

FL: Is John Thrasher brave enough to thwart campus guns?

Now Thrasher is the president of FSU, and his GOP former colleagues in the Legislature are back at it: The House Criminal Justice Subcommittee has approved a new campus carry bill and the Senate is working on its own version. Given that pro-NRA conservatives control nearly two-thirds of both houses, that bill could sail to Scott’s desk once the main legislative session opens in March.

That is, unless Thrasher repeats his act of courage. "I’m a Second Amendment person, I believe in the Second Amendment. I’ve supported gun rights," he told reporters. "But just like in the First Amendment, there are exceptions. When it comes to guns on campus, the consequences far outweigh the positives."

The Connecticut legislature will vote Friday on the nomination of a Superior Court judge candidate who was bashed by the National Rifle Association earlier this month for her support of a 2013 major gun control law passed in the aftermath of the Newtown school shooting.

Lawmakers are hearing from both gun rights supporters and gun control advocates as they consider the nomination of former state Rep. Auden Grogins.

The proposal to restrict the Second Amendment rights of Virginians backfired on Governor Terry McAuliffe when on Monday, he watched his bills die in committee and bills granting greater gun freedom move forward. McAuliffe announced in December gun control would be a cornerstone to his administration, such as renewing Virginia’s expired law limiting handgun purchases to once a month. In what Philip Van Cleave, president of Virginia Citizens Defense League, called “an awesome day,” the commonwealth’s Senate Courts of Justice Committee rejected the governor’s bills and instead approved bills that would allow Virginians to get a lifetime gun permit and carry on school grounds if school was not in session.

A Gastonia police officer couldn’t believe it last year when his search stumped Google.

Josh Self, a longtime officer with the Gastonia Police Department, was looking for an easy way to get his rifles and shotguns from under his bed and closet. His gun cabinet was full, and he didn’t want to leave his guns unsecured and propped against the wall.

The use of guns against property violations is highly moral, since a person’s life and his property are intertwined.

Now, what we mean by property is of utmost importance. An anarcho-capitalist with a Rothbardian approach would say that property is the natural right of a person, by virtue of being a person. In other words, property rights are not a function of private property alone, but an extension of the life of the person. That is why Murray Rothbard stipulates that property rights are human rights, as an absolute principle.

In the dramatic video from inside the New Hope, Minnesota city council chambers, one of the council members reacts to the sound of gunfire outside of the doors by drawing his own weapon and preparing to defend his colleagues.

It is clear that the council member on the left of the screen has considered this sort of scenario, and is mentally prepared. Immediately after the shots are fired, you hear a voice saying, “Get down!, Get down!”. As the video progresses, and shows the councilman with the handgun on the left, it is clear that he is the one giving commands and taking responsibility for defense, even though he has to expose himself to do so.

After saying Tuesday that open carry legislation didn't have the votes to pass the Senate and didn't reach the "level of prioritizing," Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick sent out a press release on Wednesday signaling that he might be reconsidering.

After noting that he had referred a bill to committee allowing concealed weapons to be carried on university campuses by those with appropriate licenses, Patrick said in a statement, "Now that [Senate Bill] 11 has support and is moving towards passage we can focus on other Second Amendment issues, including open carry, which I have consistently supported."

Versions of House Bill 203 have been around before; it would prohibit state and local officials from enforcing any federal guns bans.

For gun rights advocates before the House Judiciary Committee of the Montana Legislature on Tuesday, it's about the Second Amendment and state's rights.

"While the federal government has the ability to do a lot of things we cannot control, we have the ability to control our own state officers and local officials," MT State Representative Art Wittich (R-Bozeman) said.

I would argue that most people I know with a concealed carry permit do not have it simply to “pack heat.” They do so as they do not feel a comfort level and sense of security living in Albany County or elsewhere. They perceive some level of threat to family and self and are simply practicing the right to defend themselves and their loved ones. Many have previously been victims and are now refusing to be a victim again in the future. Prior victims have a right to a “comfort level and sense of security” that was taken away when they were victimized, and they regain their sense of security by “refusing to be a victim” in the future.

The gun control group the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) wants Fox News affiliate WTTF to fire its investigative reporter, Emily Miller, claiming that she violated journalistic ethics by criticizing Washington D.C.’s strict gun laws at a recent event.

In its attempt to get Miller fired, CSGV pointed to a Jan. 19 speech she gave at an event held by the Virginia Citizens Defense League — which CSGV claims is “a radical pro-gun group that embraces the use of political violence.”

During the rally, Miller said that Washington D.C. “is not part of America, because they don’t recognize the Second Amendment.”

When he was elected, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made it clear that he’d sign a bill legalizing the open carry of handguns. Texas is only of just a small number of states where the open carry of handguns is presently illegal.

Unfortunately, despite a number of competing open bills being proposed, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is saying that they simply don’t have the votes to get an open carry bill passed.

With rallies, petitions and even an altercation that ended with one group being asked to leave the Capitol, gun rights groups have been hard to miss this legislative session.

"We really want our legislators to just honor their oath to the constitution of the United States,” Valente Gonzalez with Open Carry Texas said.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick questioned whether there's enough support for open carry to pass in the Senate on our Capital Tonight show earlier this month. On Tuesday, he said publicly that the issue is important but not a priority, getting gun advocates even more fired up.

Teachers would be able to use deadly force against students, and would be safe from prosecution, under legislation filed last week in the state House.

The Teacher’s Protection Act by Rep. Dan Flynn, R-Van, would allow educators to use force or deadly force if they feel they need to protect themselves against a student or anyone else on school grounds. It also allows teachers to use deadly force to protect school property, and to avoid prosecution “for injury or death that results from the educator’s use of deadly force.”

On 16 January, just before the Shot Show, the BATF published an open letter on the subject of “The Redesign of “Stabilizing Braces”. The letter was supposed to “clarify” the increasingly muddy, irrational, and stupid law. A combination of the thwarted original intent of the legislation, combined with continued bureaucratic desires to “grow the rice bowl*” and the irrational belief of disarmists that any additional regulation is good, no matter what, has resulted in our arrival at this point.

Today HB-114 repeal gun free zones passed out of Judiciary Committee 8-1 without any amendments.

Take a few seconds to cheer. Okay…that’s enough.

Today’s vote was just a small first step on a long road filled with potholes.

I watched as the Education Lobby lined up against the people’s right to self defense. They literally will do and say anything to keep their precious ‘gun free’ killing zones.

January, February and March constitute what we outdoor types call show season. My favorite is the Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade Show, which is an industry-only event that, a few years ago, migrated to Las Vegas and never left.

We get our most comfortable shoes and walk miles of aisles, and try to find what is new and cool and what is hot from SHOT. It starts with media day at the range.

One thing a person with a bit of history in the industry notices is girls. Serious girls with guns. Females with fusils. Women with weapons in target-shooting, self-defense, hunting, law enforcement and the military.

Texas never met a gun-rights bill it didn't like.

But if one actually fails to pass the Legislature this session, the author of the state's 1995 handgun permit law knows why.

A bill to allow Texans to pack pistols without a permit won't pass "because of the Tarrant County open-carry group's obnoxious behavior," former Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson warned by email Tuesday.

Dan Patrick said there is not enough support in the Senate. What?!?!!? Not enough support for the Constitution? The job they swore to uphold? We have 20 Republican Senators. Are they listening to lobbyist and gun organizations who are pro money?…. or the people?

Well, it’s time to hunt down the Republicans who don’t support the Constitution and the Republican Platform. Then, we will expose them and help them find a new job by making sure they won’t have a chance to ever get elected in Texas again. Time to start sending these people to California.

No charges will be filed against an 80-year-old man who fatally shot a woman who was burglarizing his Long Beach home, prosecutors said Monday.

On July 22, Thomas Greer fired two bullets into the back of Andrea Miller, 28, even after she begged him not to shoot and claimed she was pregnant.

Prosecutors say Miller and her suspected accomplice, 26-year-old Gus Adams, had assaulted Greer before prying open a safe and stealing $5,000.
