A new bill that aims to mandate background checks for nearly all commercial and private firearm purchases has bipartisan support within Michigan's congressional delegation.

The legislation introduced in Congress this month would close a loophole that allows people buying firearms through private sales, such as those at gun shows and online, to skip background checks.

Sponsors say the goal is to prevent sales to felons, domestic abusers and people with mental-health issues that would disqualify themfrom gun ownership.

In the wake of last week’s Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas, a piece in The Atlantic acknowledges what Second Amendment activists have known for a long time: Democrats are “championing…gun reform” in Congress and state legislatures all over the map.

At the same time, a different report in the New Yorker reveals just how fearful liberal anti-gunners seem to be about a new case accepted last week by the U.S. Supreme Court by observing that this will be the first opportunity for freshman Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh “to begin building what promises to be a disastrous pro-gun legacy.

A southern Indiana woman thought an Indiana self-defense law would protect her from legal jeopardy after she shot a man to death who was assaulting a conservation officer. Instead, she found herself facing a lawsuit. Kystie Phillips, an Ohio County resident, said she fired the fatal shot after she saw the man reaching for the officer’s gun as the two wrestled. At the time, she was labeled a hero, but the family of the dead man filed a lawsuit against Phillips and the officer last year.

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill, along with attorneys general and governors from 22 other states, is asking the US Supreme Court to hear a case surrounding the rights of individuals to carry firearms outside their homes. The states are asking the court to review a lower court ruling in Rogers v. Grewal. The lower court upheld a New Jersey law which restricts a person’s right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense, unless the person can demonstrate a ‘justifiable need’ to do so.

The EAA’s non-reciprocating bolt handle and sliding safety are on the left side of the gun’s lower receiver (inset), and a bolt catch lies just below the comb at the rear of the magazine well. Bullpup-style firearms have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their enhanced maneuverability—without sacrificing downrange effectiveness. That being said, most new product development in the realm has focused primarily on rifles, not shotguns. Fortunately, EAA Corp. is challenging that trend by importing the MKA 1923 bullpup 12-ga. shotgun, which is made in Turkey by Husan Arms.

Some Mecklenburg County commissioners want to explore whether they can prohibit guns in county parks and recreational facilities, in what would be a shift in direction for the new, all-Democratic board. But it’s unclear how much the county board could change the current rules, which generally allow concealed carry permit holders to carry firearms in county parks and on greenways, except for land leased from schools, where guns are already banned. A state law passed in 2013 significantly limits where local governments can prohibit concealed carry permit holders and specifically exempts greenways and open park space.

Churchgoers in Virginia could soon legally bring their guns alongside their Bible after a bill cleared the state Senate last week and sparked a heated debate about whether packing heat could help save lives -- or is a slap in the face of God. The bill passed on strictly partisan lines -- 21 Republicans supported it and 19 Democrats opposed it. But the debate was turned heated.

Gov. Doug Ducey said in his State of the State address that he wanted to find ways for Republicans and Democrats to work together. Or, as he put it, “I’m not here just to work with Republicans on Republican ideas. And bipartisanship doesn’t simply mean working with Democrats on Democratic ideas. I’m here as governor of all the people to work with all of you on good ideas.” Here’s one: Remove weapons from domestic abusers.

The full Senate that day could debate a plan to allow firearms in the Capitol building. And the House Education Committee is scheduled Monday to take up Gov. Year after year, gun control advocates have pushed for stricter access to guns in Minnesota. The 2019 Legislative Session may be their best chance in years to get legislation passed. Two gun control bills were introduced this week at the Capitol. One would expand background checks, while the other would enact a "red flag" law where a loved one or law enforcement could push to restrict a person's access to guns if they're considered a threat to themselves or others.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday his support for stringent gun control measures is so strong that he wants to see it mentioned in the first paragraph of the eulogy that will be given when he dies. Cuomo's provocative statement in a public radio interview, addressing a topic that divides the state along regional lines, came on the eve of what is expected to be the passage of several pieces of legislation designed to expand on the controversial gun restrictions he signed following the massacre of school children and teachers at a Connecticut school in 2012.

Journalist and academic Patrick Blanchfield encouraged listeners to abandon partisan responses and called attention to U.S. gun violence and the reactions it prompts, which he presented as a phenomenon called “Gunpower,” also the name of his upcoming book. In his presentation, in the Hawkins-Carlson room on Tuesday, Blanchfield described Gunpower as a way in which guns are distributed in some contexts and restricted in others. He called it a “uniquely American approach to managing disorder and social reproduction.”

It’s been nearly thirty years since I last hunted upland birds at Fort Bragg while stationed there. Yeah, I hunted dove there this year with my son. But I’m talking now about walking through the fields behind a bird dog type of upland hunting. My son, stationed at Fort Bragg, and I have been trying to get together for a quail and woodcock hunt for several months. With the woodcock season coming to a close soon, and with the federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, we finally made it happen this past week.
