One of the most popular handgun cartridges available on the market today, the .380 Automatic Colt Pistol (ACP) is an easy-to-carry self-defense cartridge. With a variety of small, lightweight compact pistols chambered in this caliber, its mild recoil and minimal muzzle blast make it a popular choice among those who carry concealed, police officers looking for a capable back-up gun, and general backyard plinkers and target shooters.

The newly elected members of the U.S. Congress are shown here on the steps of the Capitol Building. Two things are simultaneously true. One: That the Republican party did not get the “red wave” that it had hoped for in the 2022 midterm elections. Two: That the Republican party improved its position in Washington, D.C., in the 2022 midterm elections, and thereby made it more difficult for President Joe Biden (D) and his allies in Congress to push through the gun-control measures they desire.

Choosing the best handgun ammo depends on the caliber you're using and your circumstances.

I primarily use my handguns for personal defense and target shooting, so that's what we'll focus on in this article.

A pair of controversial gun bills advanced out of the Washington House Civil Rights & Judiciary Committee during an executive session on Friday, including a bill that would ban certain firearms. House Bill 1240 would ban "assault weapons", which it defines as a category of semiautomatic rifles that fit certain criteria, including being shorter than 30 inches and having the ability to accept a detachable magazine.

Good morning. I’m Paul Thornton, and it is Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023. Let’s look back at the week in Opinion. We’re playing the tape again: A lot of people going about their lives peacefully were killed in an instant because someone arrived on scene with enough anger and strength to squeeze a trigger repeatedly. Of course, I’m talking about the mass shooting Jan. 21 in Monterey Park, where 11 people died at a dance studio amid Lunar New Year revelry.

Depending on where you live, you could hear stories around the proverbial water cooler about dangerous interactions with local fauna. That could include getting chased by an alligator (happened to me), nearly hitting a black bear with your car (happened to me), or even accidentally stepping on a cottonmouth while wearing flip-flops (yeah, that one too).

NSSF, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to block state authorities from enforcing HB 5471, the recently-enacted “Protect Illinois Communities Act,” which bans the sale of several hundred of the most commonly-owned semiautomatic rifles in America, including all rifles on the very popular Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) platform.

Cadex Defense was showing off their Strike Pro chassis, Seven STARS action, and complete rifle at SHOT Show 2023. With the complete rifle build, I was able to get 2 out of 3 hits at 960 yards in switchy 20-30 mph winds at Industry Day on the range. Needless to say, I was impressed. It felt incredibly stable and soft recoiling so that I was able to easily spot my shots. The bolt throw was light and smooth as was the trigger pull.

As the ammo market is starting to return to normal, many manufacturers are seeing this as a cue to introduce new loadings of our favorite cartridges and even a few new cartridges altogether. To that end, I have scoured the 2023 NSSF Industry Day at the Range and SHOT Show to find the latest and greatest. Here is what I came up with.

In three cases last term, the constitutional concepts of history and tradition played important roles in the reasoning of the Supreme Court. Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization relied on history and tradition to overrule Roe v. Wade. New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen articulated a history and tradition test for the validity of laws regulating the right to bear arms recognized by the Second Amendment. Kennedy v. Bremerton School District looked to history and tradition in formulating the implementing doctrines for the First Amendment Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses.

When Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer gave her State of the State address on January 25, many of the issues she approached were expected: combating inflation by rolling back retirement taxes, expanding the Working Families Tax Credit and initiating pre-k for all MI children. Once the issue of gun control was broached, however, Whitmer created discussion as she called for universal background checks, safe storage laws and “red flag” laws.

A lifetime of work led me to write the book America’s Rifle: The Case for the AR-15. I began challenging “assault-weapon” bans when California passed the first state ban in American history, the Roberti-Roos law of 1989. At the time, the Ninth Circuit ruled that the right to keep and bear arms didn’t apply in California, a denial that the U.S. Supreme Court overruled when it held the Second Amendment also restricts state and local government, in McDonald v. Chicago (2010)

There was a time when Connecticut Valley Arms was only known for its imported black powder rifles and handguns. But recent years have seen the company shifting into high gear with centerfire bolt guns. Perhaps the biggest news thus far comes from SHOT Show 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s where we got our hands on the newest CVA Cascade X-Treme.
