The sixth generation fighters and upgrades to older fighters over the next 10-20 years will involve better engines for more range and speed, hypersonic weapons, combat lasers, unmanned flight and drones. Hypersonic missiles (mach 5 or faster) are already being introduced by Russia and China. The US is developing combat laser pods which will be added to fighter jets. Unmanned flight is being used for various planes. Large drones are being deployed to help with refueling existing military planes. Future large drones will fight alongside future fighter planes.

Maryland will add three laws to its already sweeping gun-control regulations on Monday, while shoppers in the District will see their sales and cigarette taxes go up. The provisions are among hundreds of recently passed laws taking effect in the region on Oct. 1. In Maryland, the gun laws — passed in the wake of two mass shootings at high schools this year and the massacre at a Las Vegas concert last year — are designed to limit access to firearms and certain accessories. They also might have cost Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) his high ranking with the National Rifle Association.

A woman who’d been held against her will in a California apartment managed to get her captor's gun and shoot him in self-defense early Saturday, authorities said. The shooting was reported around 12:35 a.m. PDT Saturday, and upon arriving, deputies found the man, identified as Raphael Bhatti, 25, of Thousand Oakseway. Deputies confirmed Bhatti had suffered a gunshot wound.

A U.S. District Judge today refused to issue a preliminary injunction, or an injunction pending appeal, halting enforcement of New Jersey’s magazine ban enacted in June. See a copy of that legal decision here. However, the district court’s decision is not the last word on the matter. Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs counsel were ready for the contingency and have already filed a notice of appeal, and they anticipate filing the papers Monday seeking an expedited decision halting the law during the appeal.

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed legislation Friday to expand the state’s gun confiscation law and raise the minimum age for long gun purchases to 21. Reuters reports that Brown’s signature expands California’s gun violence restraining orders, which allow firearms to be confiscated from residents under court order. The new law “makes it easier for family members and police to take firearms and ammunition away from people.”

Two police officers and one suspect were killed in a shootout in Brookhaven, Mississippi, early Saturday morning.
According to the Clarion Ledger, details on the shootout are scarce, but authorities did say one suspect was killed and another was wounded and hospitalized. The names of the deceased officers have not been released.

The president of the Wayland Rod and Gun Club said a citizens petition to limit the firing of guns in town is simply a ploy to shut down his club. “It’s an effort to shut down the Wayland Rod and Gun Club. Let’s call it for what it is,” club President Stephen Garanin said. Wayland resident Tom Gulley, one of the petition’s two co-sponsors, agreed the move is directed at the club.

Lupe Valdez, the Democratic nominee for governor, swung away at Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in their first and only debate Friday evening, while Abbott largely ignored her and defended his first term. Valdez, the former Dallas County sheriff, hammered Abbott in response to nearly every question, accusing him of focusing on the wrong issues in his first term. Abbott often responded to the criticism obliquely and rarely mentioned his opponent.

An Iowa weapons company has donated assault weapons for local schools. KXMB-TV News reported last week that the Brownells Company donated nine AR-15 assault rifles (the civilian/police version of the M-16) to Bismarck Police for school resource officers. The donation grew out of concerns expressed by authorities in the wake of school shootings around the country in recent years.

Leaders in this East Bay city will on Tuesday night consider approving an ordinance that would require firearms and certain other weapons to be stored in a locked, secure container when not being handled or carried on one's person. Orinda's proposed ordinance defines "firearm" or "weapon" as "any instrument or device which propels a shell, shot, pellet, cartridge, bullet, arrow or other projectile by any force including, but not limited to, air, gas, explosion, spring, elasticity or leverage." This covers pistols, revolvers, shotguns and other firearms' air guns, any bow and arrow with a pull of 15 pounds or more, and crossbows and similar archery devices.

Libby Gardner spent plenty of childhood hours in this neck of the woods, often riding atop the padded center console of her dad’s vehicle, keeping a keen eye peeled for the distinct outline of a ruffed grouse. A Cameron woman says she shot her husband after he allegedly forced his way into her home with a handgun and assaulted her and a juvenile female, according to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office. WTVD reported that Jeffrey Hooks, 60, has been charged with breaking and entering to terrorize and two counts of assault on a female and assault by pointing a gun.

A small segment of Tulare Avenue near Laspina Street was closed to drivers Saturday afternoon as firefighters worked to identify what started an attic fire above a Tulare firearms dealer. Tulare firefighters were called to the area along the heavily-used roadway just before 2 p.m. with reports of a fire, said Division Chief Rodnie Roberts.

Hundreds of pro-gun supporters and counter-protesters clashed on the campus of Kent State University Saturday at a during a pro-Second Amendment walk. For the most part, the protests were peaceful but the rally was cut short an more than an hour before it was scheduled to wrap-up, due in part to the large number of counter-protesters that showed up. According to WKYC, the event was organized by Kaitlin Bennet, the Kent State graduate who gained notoriety on the internet this past spring for an on-campus photo shoot featuring her AR-10. Bennett was angry that the Second Amendment event was cut short but vowed that she would be back.

Donna Nathan, who had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals three times this year, drove to Gretna June 26 and bought a .38-caliber revolver. Eight hours later, she was found dead from a gunshot wound in Audubon Park. She left a handwritten note to her boyfriend that said, "I'm sorry. I love you."

A gun raffle for a Georgia high school soccer team has drawn criticism from former students. Some former students of Dodge County High School are bothered after learning through Facebook that 30 guns were being raffled in September to benefit the soccer team, the Telegraph of Macon reported . An organizer of the raffle said they are trying to raise money to help with uniforms and feed kids on out-of-town trips.
