Responsible gun owners defended themselves, but you didn't hear it in the news. Instructor Jeff Street brings us three new examples.

First story- It is close to midnight when your wife wakes you up. She heard glass breaking. Your two young grandchildren are sleeping in the house, so you won’t take any chances. You grab your shotgun.

Second Story- It is mid-afternoon. You’re walking across a parking lot. A stranger pulls a gun out of his pocket as you pass. He yells for you to hand over your wallets and cellphones.

Third story- You’re at home when you hear someone breaking into the side door of your house. You grab your gun and walk toward the sound.

What would you do in these situations? (16 minute audio)

Being prepared during a violent event could be the difference between life and death. The recent mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed dozens and injured hundreds has prompted the conversation locally.

Henry Reyna of Secure Solution LLC of Midland has been training people to be prepared in these situations for almost 10 years. Reyna works with private businesses, churches and schools to put together a response plan.

Reyna said that a plan of action should be in place for families at all times.

"Immediately, wherever you arrive, you have to have this discussion with your family," Reyna said. "Where is cover and concealment? Where are the secondary exits? Because everyone will be going toward the primary exit."

FBI Chooses Hornady Critical Duty for Issue Ammo

The FBI awarded Hornady a contract for its Critical Duty .40 S&W 175-grain FlexLock ammunition. The innovative loads were first introduced in 2011, only a few years after the company rolled out its Critical Defense offering, which is finely tuned for civilian self-defense.

Both versions are tipped with bullets that harness the proven performance of the company’s patented Flex Tip, which eliminates any clogging in flight that can compromise terminal performance. Yet, that semi-soft—in signature Hornady red—synthetic promotes the kind of bullet expansion on impact that stops a criminal encounter with authority. The lack of a hollow-point up front also minimizes the chances of an ammunition-related stoppage.

My son-in-law likes to have his rifles built for him by a gunsmith in the Houston area. As we were talking, he showed me the most recent rifle that he had ordered from his gunsmith in .280 Ackley Improved.

This is the rifle he plans to hunt deer, pronghorn and elk in Wyoming. He put a lot of thought into what caliber to have his gunsmith chamber his custom firearm.

Other than being a little heavier than I like to carry, I think he made a good decision. Besides, he is a lot taller and younger than I am, and probably won't have any trouble carrying a 9 1/2 pound rifle all day.

Governor Jerry Brown signed a measure on Saturday closing a loophole in California law that allows some K-12 school personnel to carry their firearms in gun-free school zones.

The new bill, which takes effect January 1, updates a 2015 law that gave district superintendents authority to decide if staffers with permits to carry concealed weapons could come to school armed. Five California districts had begun to issue authorizations for staffers to carry in gun-free school zones, according to Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty of Sacramento, who authored the bill to remove that option.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) is back at work after being shot this summer, and he still believes that Second Amendment rights are integral to America.

"This is part of our constitution and our country," the Louisiana congressman said on "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday. "Our Second Amendment rights are critical to what our Founding Fathers envisioned."

"Go read what Thomas Jefferson wrote, what John Adams wrote about the importance of people having firearms to protect themselves," he advised.

Our civil rights are under attack, and have been for some time. The freedom to assemble etched out in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is under attack by the Second Amendment — and it shouldn’t be. Jason Aldean’s concert was a peaceful assembly ravaged by a lone gunman who, for all intents and purposes, had the right of gun ownership.

This concert and other similar group events such as Latin Night at the Pulse nightclub are peaceful assemblies. It is not a stretch for someone to be concerned about his own, or one of his family member’s safety in the future. U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise was at a peaceful assembly when he was shot.

Indiana State Representative Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) has written a bill that would require professional journalists to be licensed by the state, pay a $75 fee, and submit fingerprints.

“If you’re OK licensing my Second Amendment right, what’s wrong with licensing your First Amendment right?” he said, according to the Indy Star.

Lucas is referencing the Second Amendment’s “right of the people to keep and to bear Arms” and the Indiana law that requires a license to carry a handgun. Note: Indiana, home state of Vice President Mike Pence, has no law requiring a permit to purchase a handgun or a system of registration for handgun owners. in 2015, Guns & Ammo rated Indiana the 16th best state for gun owners.

“If this case were about bookstores or abortion clinics, this wouldn’t even be a close call,” Combs explained. “We are cautiously optimistic that the high court will step back in and correct the direction of Second Amendment jurisprudence in the 9th Circuit very soon.”

“It’s hard to imagine the court getting this decision about gun stores more wrong,” said Donald Kilmer of San Jose, the plaintiffs’ attorney. “If there is no Second Amendment right to sell guns through a licensed firearms dealership, then the state government could effectively and simply end all access to firearms by extending the County’s ban statewide.”

When anti-racist protesters held a demonstration against the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville in August, their protest was protected by an informal militia of 20 rifle-toting leftists who surrounded the perimeter of Justice Park. “It’s a deterrent,” Kevin Smith, a member of a leftist gun club who was part of the informal security detail, told the Colorado Springs Independent. “There were people there who wanted to come over and start [fights] with people, but they saw us and stayed across the street.”

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed a bill over the weekend preventing public school employees from carrying firearms on school property.

What does this mean?
The new bill overturned the right for school district superintendents to allow certain employees — on a case-by-case basis — to carry concealed weapons on school grounds.

School district superintendents were granted permission of jurisdiction in permitting certain employees to carry firearms in 2016.

Do tougher gun laws lead to ‘dramatically lower rates of gun violence’?

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Oct. 8, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) asserted that tough gun laws do work, pointing generally to low rates of gun violence in states with tough laws.

Let’s deal with the AR-15 portion of Murphy’s claim first. To support the senator’s contention that tough gun laws lead to reduced gun violence, Murphy’s spokesperson pointed to several studies that examine the effect of changes in gun laws in several states. None of the studies address bans on assault weapons such as the AR-15, but the effectiveness of an assault weapons ban was widely studied after Congress imposed a nationwide 10-year ban in 1994.

CA: New gun control measure could require locking up firearms at home

Two weeks after a man gunned down 58 people at an outdoor Las Vegas concert, the Bay Area’s largest city could pass a law requiring gun owners to lock up their firearms when they leave the house — a new gun control measure far stricter than state legislation.

The idea, under consideration Tuesday, stems from sweeping measures proposed last year by San Jose city councilmen Ash Kalra — now a state assemblyman — and Raul Peralez. In addition to requiring gun owners to lock up their weapons when they’re not home, they’d need to place them in a lock box in unattended cars, report theft within 48 hours and ammunition vendors would need to keep records of sales.

CA: Eliminate all guns

The Second Amendment is outdated and was enacted for the purpose of using militia forces to quell uprisings. We as a country do not require the Second Amendment to protect us anymore.

The big question is, how do we achieve the elimination of all guns with the exception of law enforcement and armed services personnel? Congress could declare a month for the giving up of all firearms. They could be deposited at police stations and other government offices, and those who don't comply would be heavily fined and face jail time.

ME: Citizens shouldn't own military-grade weapons

But how in hell’s creation does one morally justify letting a private citizen own a military-grade weapon such as an AR-15 for the purpose of pleasure or hunting? They were made for one purpose: to kill people.

I agree that we must learn ways to eliminate senseless killings. And the first step is to realize that our forefathers never envisioned such firepower from a single weapon having the ability to kill mass numbers of our innocent citizens. I would like to think that if they were clairvoyant, the Second Amendment would have been reworded to define “reasonable” arms.

Democrats who believe that running against the Second Amendment is a road to victory in 2018 need to think again, according to a poll released Tuesday.

A University of North Florida survey showed that only 42 percent of respondents support a ban on assault weapon and large-capacity ammunition sales; 52 percent of respondents oppose, including 55 percent of Republicans and 47 percent of Democrats.

“Even in the wake of the Las Vegas shootings, Floridians are not supportive of restricting access to assault weapons,” said Dr. Michael Binder, UNF Public Opinion Research Laboratory faculty director.

Here is an example of a regulation that could provide an effective compromise. If individuals want to own semi-automatic assault weapons, either as collectors or for practice shooting, then enforce a provision that such weapons can only be kept at legally registered shooting ranges or other registered depositories, and cannot be removed from the designated premises.

Similarly, if individuals want to use unusual high-powered weapons for hunting, and if such weapons are deemed to be acceptable for hunting purposes, then require that the hunters collect their weapons from a registered hunting depot and redeposit them after hunting, with the guns and ammunition properly accounted for.

Do you want equality between men and women?

I do.

Which is why I own a gun. My Glock 43 is my equalizer.

Too NRA for you? Then, let’s take a step back and think about this. I will start with this premise: Men are physically stronger than women.
