MI: GOP Vows to Ease Gun Access

The nation’s deadliest mass shooting has temporarily delayed Michigan Republican lawmakers’ plans to scrap concealed pistol training requirements and expand gun access, but top GOP leaders say the fight isn’t over.

Concealed carry permits need to be eliminated because they amount to an unfair “coat tax” costing legal gun owners money when a gun is hidden but not when it’s carried openly, Republican proponents say. But most Democrats and some Republicans say the plan risks more gun violence by not only ending concealed weapon permits, but removing currently required safety training.

A 20-year-old Detroit man is recovering after shooting himself with a gun he apparently found in a heat vent outdoors on the city's west side.

The shooting took place about 7:20 p.m. Sunday on the 20000 block of Griggs, said Jennifer Watson, a Detroit Police Department spokeswoman. That's south of Eight Mile and west of Wyoming.

Witnesses told police that after finding a handgun in a heat vent in the area, the man was playing with the gun when it went off and shot him.

After being transported to an area hospital, the man was in temporary serious condition at last report.

Police are investigating.

Texas hunters can expect another good quail and duck season as hunting began Saturday, Oct. 28. Parks Rangers at Twin Buttes Reservoir and San Angelo State Park are reporting sightings of large coveys of quail and say the marshy regions of both reservoirs are beginning to attract migrating ducks. Quail did not have a particularly good nesting season in the spring because of the lack rainfall across much of Texas, especially in the Western regions around San Angelo and the immediate area.

The Sault High and Middle School Rifle Teams will hold an organizational meeting on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the range in the high school (the range is located in the basement across from the weight room).

Parents are welcome to attend either the organizational meeting or any practices. All equipment is provided except ammunition which is provided at a nominal cost. All new shooters will be restricted to Air Rifles until they demonstrate they have a good working knowledge of safety and can demonstrate competence with the equipment.

The teams shoot an international course of fire as shot in the Olympics and major international matches. This is a co-ed sport with everyone shooting on an even footing against everyone else.

In 2001 there were 1.8 million registered female hunters in the U.S. but by 2013 that number increased 85 percent almost totaling 3.3 million. The N.R.A also says the reasoning behind this increase is due to two things: The increasing number of women wanting to learn how to hunt and self and home defense.

Should doctors ask patients if they own guns? The American College of Physicians says, yes, it’s a public health issue. But others say that’s a privacy violation. Dr. Comilla Sasson is an emergency physician at the Denver VA Medical Center. While assessing her patients, she’ll ask them about their mental health, and about their access to guns. “It’s very important to know do you have access to guns at home? Do you have firearms? Are they in a safe? Are they locked up if you have children around you? So it really just becomes part of our past medical history,” Dr. Sasson said.

Days after the government released thousands of pages related to the investigation of the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, a surprising number of Americans still believe that he was the victim of a conspiracy, according to a new Rasmussen survey released Monday.

At a time when the nation has just seen a former Donald Trump campaign manager indicted, there is growing concern over North Korea and Hollywood seems to be falling apart at the seams with an avalanche of bad news about sexual harassment, the public still wonders about that fateful day in Dallas on Nov. 22.

One of the nation ‘s leading gun rights organizations on Monday leveled its sights on the San Francisco 49ers football team for pledging $500,000 to gun control efforts, including a ban on so-called “bump stocks” and firearm suppressors, declaring that the team is “definitely off sides.” Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, announced that “We’re throwing a flag on this play.” “After weeks of protests at various NFL games that have seen players disrespect the National Anthem,” Gottlieb said in a statement, “resulting in sliding television ratings and fan disapproval, giving a half-million dollars to people who attack gun rights is worse than a clipping penalty.

At the end of the latest legislation session Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed a bill removing mandatory enhanced sentencing for criminals who use guns in the commission of their crimes. He did this at the same time that he signed other legislation making it illegal for teachers to be armed on K-12 campuses for self-defense. Liberal logic–teachers are not allowed to shoot back if under attack and criminals face no mandatory sentence enhancement for using a gun in carrying out an attack.

“Michael Moore flubs stats on people killed with guns during home invasions,” Politifact reported Wednesday. He got so much wrong, they assigned a “Mostly False” rating on their “Truth-O-Meter,” no small acknowledgment considering a demonstrable “progressive” leaning on guns by the self-designated “fact check” arbiters.

The Joint Committee on Judiciary and Public Policy is scheduled to hold its final meeting of the year Monday. Up for discussion will be a proposal pushed by Republican Rep. Jim Lucas, of Seymour, who argues the licensing requirement infringes on the Second Amendment.

In the days after the Oct. 1 mass shooting, the National Rifle Association and its puppets in Congress gave the impression they were finally ready to consider reasonable steps to reduce gun violence. We should have known they were only throwing up a smokescreen. Now comes news that Congress is pushing an ugly piece of legislation known as the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would essentially rob states like Nevada of the ability to decide who should and shouldn’t be allowed to carry a concealed weapon within our state lines.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. — EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens]
