Last year, the Grand Valley State shooting club had two alphas. One was senior Gregory Quante who graduated this past year. The other is current senior Alex Cyburt. Both marksmen qualified for national competition a year ago. With Quante out in the real world, it is time for Cyburt to take the reigns of the team.

“He is always striving to get better,” said GVSU coach Cameron Zwart. “We start the conference season this Saturday. I hope he can kind of carry us through the conference season.”

Cyburt is a second-year transfer student from Saline, Michigan. He transferred to GVSU from Washtenaw Community College. He had never shot a rifle in any competition setting before college.

When it comes to Carry Life footwork, it doesn’t get much easier: Never go backwards, and keep those toes pointed in the direction you’re moving.

Now Carry on.

OK, OK, OK: It’s not quite that easy, but maybe we made our point—it’s nearly so. It’s in reintroducing the hands and firearm that things get tricky.

I have never been a proponent of “open carry.” It’s not that I have any moral objection to wearing your heart on your sleeve and a gun on your hip; it’s just that it’s not my kind of look.

There are times when keeping your iron on the outside makes sense but they usually involve war zones or hunts in bear country. Besides, while open carry doesn’t necessarily welcome observers, it certainly does welcome observation.

The National Rifle Association -- a widely popular organization among the American electorate, despite being one of the Left's most loathed betes noires -- is out with an emotionally-impactful television ad in support of Donald Trump and opposing Hillary Clinton.

It features the true story of a young woman named Kristi McMains, who fought off a knife-wielding attacker in a parking garage with her handgun, possibly saving her life. She frames the Second Amendment as women's rights issue, criticizing Hillary Clinton for seeking to restrict those rights.

Alexander Soros has donated $100,000 in support of a campaign, spearheaded by California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, to secure passage of a statewide “high-capacity” magazine ban through Proposition 63 on the November ballot.
Prop 63 will also require law-abiding citizens to undergo a background check before they are allowed to purchase ammunition in California.

Back in the day, the Smokin’ . 357 Magnum was once considered a bad A$$ pistol round.

But….that was before Dirty Harry hit the scene telling the bad guys to “make my day” with his .44 mag.

Since that day, a .44 mag. has become a household word but it too was later pushed in the corner by the .454 Casull, .500 SW mag., .50 cal. Desert Eagle and who knows what else?

Mom was born and raised in the tiny town of Kimball in the eastern side of South Dakota. Somehow, she landed with dad in Indiana where my brother and I were born.

Lucky for me, they took us back to visit her family every October, just in time for pheasant season.

My dad hunted for pheasant and rabbit. I was the dog flushing the bird or rabbit and fetching it after the shot. But, my mom was the one who taught me how to shoot.

It's time to repeal the Second Amendment. Replace it with an amendment that will restrict the ownership of guns to members of the military, police forces, national guards and other state-sanctioned legitimate groups that have been entrusted by the states with the important responsibility of maintaining the safety and security of all citizens.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced on Thursday an expansion in concealed handgun recognition for 18- to 21-year-olds, while also announcing his office maintained every existing concealed carry agreement between West Virginia and 35 other states.

This comes just after the passage and implementation of House Bill 4145, which allows qualified individuals, age 21 and older, to carry concealed handguns without a permit and, for the first time, offers a provisional license beginning at age 18.

Along with the passage of that bill, West Virginia has received written assurance from sixteen states that they will also recognize the state’s provisional licenses.

HILLARY CLINTON (D), Presidential Nominee: We finally need to pass a prohibition on anyone who’s on the terrorist watch list from being able to buy a gun in our country. If you’re too dangerous to fly, you are too dangerous to buy a gun.

DONALD TRUMP (R), Presidential Nominee: I agree with you. When a person is on a watch list or a no-fly list — and I have the endorsement of the NRA, which I’m very proud of. These are very, very good people, and they’re protecting the Second Amendment.

But I think we have to look very strongly at no-fly lists and watch lists.

The killer in the Cascade Mall shooting was a Turkish alien who tried to purchase a handgun and asked if there was any way he could avoid the background check.

The gun shop refused to sell him a gun. The killer stole the gun he used. I’m sure if the anti-gunners passed a law requiring criminals to pass a background check on their stolen guns they would be pushing each other to get to the front of the line.

Don't count on a Swiss Army knife for self-defense

As for the Swiss Army knife, it leaves much to be desired as a self-defense weapon. One of the best self-protections is situational awareness. That means not just awareness about your surroundings but visualizing what you would and could do to protect yourself in those surroundings. If you're carrying a Swiss Army knife for protection, I don't think you've mentally prepared for the real thing.

If you're a woman, chances are your assailant is bigger, stronger, and has a longer arm reach than you. What do you think the assailant is doing while you're fumbling with your multi-tool?

A little fact checking here: Jonah is shown picking up (from an unlocked display case) and (mis)handling a 9mm but Wal-Mart, the store Cloud 9 is obviously based on, hasn't sold handguns since 1993. Wal-Mart has strict procedures on gun sales, including background checks on any employee selling or handling guns. In real life Jonah would never be asked to man the gun counter at a big box store, not simply because he doesn't like guns, but also because he knows nothing about them, how to run a background check or complete a legal sale. It wouldn't make sense for Cloud 9 to put its federal firearms license on the line like this. Moving on...

Limits on weapon type (specifically on those not even in the mind’s eye of any of our founders), bans on usage in some public places and simple registrations no more intrusive than the registration for our cars are examples of common-sense regulations and in no way traverse the right to bear arms. They also do not evade our associated responsibility to assure the resulting militia is “well-regulated,” precisely as called for in the Second Amendment.

And that's where reporter for The Federalist John Daniel Davidson took issue with the NPR story.

In an article entitled, "NPR Reporter Has No Idea What 'Come And Take It' Means," Davidson urged the government-funded radio reporter to follow his own advice and find out what the battle cry means:

"They are blissfully unaware that 'Come and Take It' is a quote from King Leonidas I of Sparta. At the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, during the second Persian invasion of Greece, Leonidas replied to Xerxes’s demand that the Greeks surrender their arms, 'molon labe' — come and take them."

I recently attended the Gun Rights Policy Conference with my husband. I learned that the gun rights movement is dealing with the same problem I’ve dealt with as a social conservative. Billionaire Michael Bloomberg is the Sugar Daddy of the campaign to disarm law-abiding citizens. In social conservatism, we have Warren Buffett and George Soros and others to deal with. Maybe the pro-Second Amendment, pro-citizen self-defense movement should team up with the pro-life, pro-family movement.

Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey will not get an endorsement from the National Rifle Association, and his rating dropped by two grades after he went against gun rights groups and his party leadership to vote for an expansion of background checks.

The Pennsylvania senator's new C rating is a downgrade from the A rating and hearty endorsement the NRA gave him when he last ran in 2010 in the Democratic-leaning state, whose residents are passionate about hunting and guns.

During the recent veto session, the Missouri House and Senate voted to override the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 656, making Missouri the 11th state to allow citizens to carry a firearm for self-defense – or what is being called “constitutional carry.” Missouri citizens have had the right to bear arms since our state’s first constitution in 1820.

In its panel decision, the Ninth Circuit reversed a dismissal by federal District Court Judge William Horsley Orrick III, holding that the district court should have applied heightened scrutiny in evaluating whether or not the County of Alameda, California’s ordinance banning gun stores within 500 feet of any residentially zoned district, school, day care center, any other firearms sales business, liquor stores, or bars was an unconstitutional infringement of Second Amendment rights.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"You seem ... to consider the judges as the ultimate arbiters of all contitutional questions; a very dangerous doctrine indeed, and one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy... The Contitution has erected no such single tribunal." --Thomas Jefferson, 1820
