Gov. Rick Snyder said Friday that he would veto controversial legislation that would allow concealed guns in Michigan schools and other restricted areas.

The Republican governor, speaking with Lansing radio host Steve Gruber on WJIM-1240, said he could only support the bill if it provided a "local option" giving communities the choice whether to allow or prohibit concealed guns in schools.

"I vetoed it once. I'd veto it again," said Snyder, referencing similar legislation he rejected in 2012.

““I bet it goes through your mind – thank God for the Second Amendment. Thank God for the Second Amendment or we’d be Europe. We would all be disarmed. You know Obama and Hillary, all of the Democrats, most of the Republicans. There would be no NRA. There would be no groups trying to protect us. Thank God for the Founding Fathers, the framers of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Thanks God because you see this going on – these poor people who were slaughtered going to a sporting event or a restaurant or a concert or potentially a shopping mall — slaughtered as they stand there by these animals, by these barbarians – and none of them are armed, none of them.”

To repeal means to revoke, rescind or cancel. Or, to remove. To amend means to revise, alter or change to make it more accurate and up-to-date.

What I said in my letter that W. Reidel responded to with so much scorn is this: "I am not totally against owning a firearm. For I own a firearm myself, "a six-shooter, and to me that's enough to protect my family and myself from criminals or from home invasion."

I don't believe we need assault weapons, the kind that are used by soldiers in battlefields overseas in protecting ourselves from criminals here at home in our country.

To own those kind of killing machines is a dangerous thing, I think.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) says gun laws have never worked and is urging fellow Republicans to defend Second Amendment rights.

“We must always be the party that protects the Second Amendment,” the 2016 contender said during the Sunshine Summit in Orlando on Friday.

“Gun laws fail everywhere they’re tried,” he added. "Law-abiding people follow the laws, while criminals don’t.
“The nation already has a Democrat Party [and] we don’t need two Democrat Parties,” he continued.

In his address, Rubio offered a broad criticism of government.

After the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama and Democrats in Congress launched a concerted effort to strengthen gun control laws. The centerpiece of their legislative agenda was a proposal that would have closed loopholes in the background check system for purchases online and at gun shows, but other measures - like limiting the size of ammunition magazines and banning military-style semiautomatic assault rifles - were offered as well.

Leading Polk County police officials have declared unanimous opposition to bills filed in the state Legislature that would legalize the open carrying of firearms, Davenport Police Chief Larry Holden said Thursday.

“The police chiefs and sheriff of Polk County are strong supporters of the Second Amendment and fully support and encourage a citizen's right to bear arms without openly baring arms,” said Holden, president of the Polk County Police Chiefs Association, a group that includes municipal chiefs of police and Sheriff Grady Judd.

Based on the scores of club members who have called and emailed, the meeting will likely not be a pleasant experience for the board of directors — far from it.

It will be a melee.

I’ve seen outrage before, but nothing even comes close to this.

I’m receiving calls from club members who are nearly apoplectic with rage over how the board is treating Gene Pitts.

Suffice it to say that the retired Marine has touched a lot of lives.

What Are France's Gun Laws Like? The Attacks Took Place In A City With Strict Firearms Prohibitions

After the Charlie Hebdo attack, many — particularly conservatives — questioned whether less restrictive gun laws would have allowed for an armed civilian intervention. While it's certainly possible, there are no guarantees, and it's not likely a civilian with a handgun could overtake several gunmen with AK-47 assault rifles. The real issue, it seems, lies in cracking down on illegal gun trafficking, not gun laws for private owners.

Ed.: Yah, much better to be a sitting duck.

GOP presidential candidate and former Speaker of the House weigh in about Middle Eastern immigrants and concealed weapons

Note to politicians itching to share their thoughts on Friday’s Paris terror attack: A simple “Our thoughts and prayers for are with the people of France” goes a long way.

Within hours of the incident, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich tweeted that the hostage crisis at Paris’s Bataclan concert hall could have been prevented if France allowed citizens to own concealed weapons.

“Imagine a theater with 10 or 15 citizens with concealed carry permits. We live in an age when evil men have to be killed by good people,” Gingrich tweeted.

This year marks the first year that deaths by guns outnumber deaths by cars for Americans aged 18 through 30. The National Rifle Association, among others, resists any legislation for gun reform and worries that stricter gun safety laws would compromise America’s most fundamental freedoms.

Gun reform is crucial to preventing guns from falling into the wrong hands and is not an attempt to take away all guns. It’s time to put our safety above the shallow argument that our right to bear arms is at stake

Most women, by nature, are not fighters, and telling someone to just point and shoot is nonsense. For a woman to pull the trigger, when it could end a life, is an emotional and stressful experience. Even the thought of it makes most women shudder. Advice like this leaves her ill equipped and unprepared for what will be required in self-defense.

“I was a bit horrified by that,” Leyonhjelm told NRA News in response to Clinton’s comments. “I don’t think Australia is a model for the United States on gun control at all.”

He said the country’s strict gun control did not lessen crime but instead they saw an increase. He said the mandatory gun buyback program made citizens less safe. “It also removed the right to own a gun in any state in Australia for self-defense. We are a nation of victims,” Leyonhjelm told the publication. “You cannot own a gun for self-defense.”

“It doesn’t matter what the circumstances. It doesn’t matter how big the threat. You cannot defend yourself.”

The feared hollow-point round, one that some believe when this ammunition is loaded a person is intending to kill. There is not a person I know who carries, an instructor I have learned from, or a law enforcement officer out there, who would say that the point of self defense is to kill your attacker. I carry every day in order to protect myself and my family. I pray I never have to do so and, if I do, that it never comes to something so final and devastating. Hollow-points are used to cause damage to an assailant in order to stop a threat, not kill it. And, they are used to keep those who are innocent safe by reducing over-penetration and ricochet.

The Board of Trustees at Texas Christian University voted to opt out of the campus carry law on Friday.

The Senate Bill 11, more commonly known as campus carry, amends the government and penal code to allow handgun license owners to carry a concealed gun on college and university campuses.

However, private universities, such as TCU, may choose to opt out after input from the campus community.

Following a series of debates, open forums and surveys, the board made its decision.

“In New York and New Jersey, which have some of the strictest laws in the country, more than two-thirds of guns tied to criminal activity were traced to out-of-state purchases in 2014,” The New York Times “reports” in [another!] hit piece on the right to keep and bear arms. “Many were brought in via the so-called Iron Pipeline, made up of Interstate 95 and its tributary highways, from Southern states with weaker gun laws, like Virginia, Georgia and Florida.”

A forum was held discussing Senate Bill 11, often known as “campus carry,” on Nov. 11. SB11 allows for concealed firearms on public universities who are given the option of having “gun-free zones.” The bill offers a caveat for private institutions that may opt out of the requirement after consulting their university community.

The forum was sponsored by the Student Government Association and moderated by President Anderson, university president. Panelists included David Crockett, professor and chair of political science, John Hermann, associate professor of political science, Sean McCutchen, student government association president and Brenham Pozzi, senior and business major.

former member of the militia group Oath Keepers is organizing an open-carry march for black gun owners, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Sam Andrews, a white gun shop owner, told the paper he wanted to hold the rally in Ferguson after being told by African-Americans the Second Amendment doesn’t extend to them equally because they felt they’d be shot for openly carrying guns.

“We intend to show that this right is not just for white people,” Andrews told the Post-Dispatch.

The group, which he said will be racially integrated, will listen to speeches then march about three blocks to Ferguson police headquarters.

A United Kingdom citizen who is a legal permanent resident of the United States alleges in a lawsuit that the Honolulu Police Department discriminates against non-U.S. citizens by making it difficult for them to obtain firearm permits.

Hawaii has some of the strongest gun laws in the nation. It is the only state that requires firearms to be registered at a statewide level, which is done through county police departments. Hawaii's permit allows someone to purchase a firearm, transport it to limited places such as a shooting range or gunsmith, or use it for hunting.

Hawaii only granted permits to U.S. citizens until a federal judge in Honolulu last year ruled that's unconstitutional.
