Zimmerman advised gun owners to buy self-defense insurance, which seems to be his greatest regret in the fatal shooting of the unarmed teen.
“Go to the range to practice, keep your guns in a safe location, and primarily, now that I know that I’m $2.5 million in debt, just in lawyers’ fees, I paid over $360,000 in hard costs to the state of Florida – just in, you know, copies, CDs, manuscripts, that kind of stuff – I would definitely invest in getting some type of self-defense insurance, and again, arming yourself with the knowledge of what you can do and what you should or shouldn’t do after the incident,” Zimmerman said. |

On Oct. 27, 2007, Amanda Collins was raped by James Biela on the UNR campus in a parking garage near the campus police office. She said she could hear officers driving off even as Biela put a gun to her head and violated her.
Amanda, life-long firearm enthusiast, had a concealed carry permit. She was not allowed to carry on campus. Nevada campuses are gun-free zones. She became an armed self-defense activist after the rape. |

Reader Tim A writes in with an ironically-named Officer Phillip White's suspension from multiple jobs for using social media in an attempt to convince us he's the biggest asshole alive.
The San Jose Police Department said Officer Phillip White was sidelined after officials learned of statements made Saturday from his Twitter account. In the tweets, White said he would kill anyone who threatens him or his family. He also said he would be off-duty at the movies with his gun if anyone "feels they can't breathe or their lives matter." |

In a victory for Second Amendment advocates, the Connecticut Supreme Court has overturned the conviction of a former Army medic who served 15 months in prison for transporting a dagger-style knife and police baton in his vehicle during a move to another state.
The justices ruled unanimously in favor of former Clinton resident Jason DeCiccio. The court said a portion of the state law on illegal possession of weapons in a motor vehicle violates the Second Amendment because it prevents people from transporting certain weapons between residences when they have the right to possess those same weapons in their homes. |

In the first legal ruling of its type, a federal appeals court in Cincinnati on Thursday deemed unconstitutional a federal law that kept a Michigan man who was briefly committed to a mental institution decades ago from owning a gun.
A three-judge panel of the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the federal ban on gun ownership for anyone who has been “adjudicated as a mental defective or who has been committed to a mental institution” violated the Second Amendment rights of Clifford Charles Tyler, a 73-year-old Hillsdale County man. |

Police say an intoxicated man was shot by a suburban San Francisco homeowner after breaking into a house he thought was his own.

Benicia police Lt. Mike Greene says the 66-year-old homeowner shot Hatch once in the torso early Wednesday.
Police are not pursuing criminal charges against the homeowner, who told officers he acted in self-defense. |

Guns are allowed back in the State House in Concord after a rule change made by a joint committee of state representatives and senators Thursday afternoon.
The ban on concealed guns was first lifted from late 2010 until 2012 and then reinstated for the past two years. While some Republicans said the rule had no practical impact on people's behavior, some Democrats said bringing guns into the House or Senate chamber goes against what the State House is all about.
"It's already happening and it's been happening for 200 years, so to ban it, to us, just didn't make more sense," said Rep. Sherman Packard, R-Londonderry. |

Nearly 200 anonymous (for now) state Democrat lawmakers have formed a gun control group in order to attack gun rights in our states. They are calling themselves American State Legislators for Gun Violence Prevention (ASLGVP).
Their reason for forming the anti-gun coalition is because of the lack of success by Congress to deteriorate our gun rights at the federal level. Now they are taking matters into their own hands by attacking gun rights in each of our states. |

As one of the last gasps of Democratic control, the Senate confirmed Vivek Murthy this week to be the nation's next Surgeon General.
Murthy's confirmation had been held up for more than a year by pro-gun lobbyists because of his support for new gun control measures. He co-founded the group Doctors for America, which has advocated for gun restrictions, but he has said his focus as Surgeon General will be on tackling America's obesity problem. |

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s reaction to the Sydney terrorist standoff, quoted in a story in this morning’s Seattle Times, provides one of those “Well, DUH” opportunities for Second Amendment activists to illustrate the fallacy behind strict gun control laws, including Washington State’s recently-passed Initiative 594.
According to the Associated Press story, “Abbott has ordered a sweeping government review of the siege and the events leading up to it, including why (dead gunman Man Haron) Monis was out on bail and how he obtained a shotgun despite the country’s tough gun laws.” The 50-year-old Monis died in a hail of gunfire after apparently firing his shotgun at some of his hostages, ending a 16-hour standoff early Tuesday. |

Two years ago this week, at Sandy Hook Elementary School, 20 children and six adults were killed in one of the deadliest school shootings in our nation’s history. I will never forget the horror of how those children died — shot at close range with a high-powered rifle, with each child hit as many as 11 times, as a shooter fired more than 150 rounds of ammunition within five minutes. The tragedy was magnified by the realization of what could have happened if the killer had more time — given the time and capacity, he would have killed hundreds of children. |

The Connecticut Supreme Court has recognized that the Second Amendment extends beyond firearms in State v. DeCiccio, after a Connecticut man moving to Massachusetts was arrested and convicted for transporting a dirk (a kind of long-bladed thrusting dagger used during the tall ship era, as well as ceremonially in certain cultures) and a police baton to his new home.
The court found that both kinds of non-firearms weapons are protected under the Second Amendment. |

The laws regarding concealed carry and the use of deadly force are amazingly complex.
Even if there is no requirement for training in your area, I beg you to get the training you NEED to ensure that you are a responsibly armed citizen.
Just because there may not be a legal requirement does not mean there is no need for training. |
