A measure challenging gun regulations is popping up around the state. Since 2015, four counties have passed a measure known as the Second Amendment Preservation ordinance, and commissioners in Malheur, Union and Lake counties have heard the same measure in the past few weeks. The ordinance is a reaction to the Oregon Firearms Safety Act, passed by the state Legislature in 2015, which requires background checks for transfers of firearms between private parties. These county ordinances allow sheriffs to ignore this law - which gun advocates see as unconstitutional.

They are the stuff of legend, wielded by hit men and by James Bond. For decades, buying a silencer for a firearm has been as difficult as buying a machine gun, requiring a background check that can take close to a year. Now, emboldened by the election of Donald Trump as president, the industry has renewed a push in Congress to ease those restrictions, arguing that it'll help preserve the hearing of gun users.

In the traditional world of hunting, the idea of teaching youths to use an AR-15 type rifle with a silencer to shoot a deer isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But that may be about to change — albeit slowly. With the proliferation of modern guns and possibility of silencer purchases becoming less restrictive, novice hunters may learn to hunt in a way their parents never did.

Republicans are moving to eliminate a rule instituted by the Obama administration that prevented certain people with mental illnesses from buying guns. As a researcher on firearms policy and mental health, I opposed the rule when it was first established. It wasn't supported by evidence, and it was far too broad. Now, Republicans are unlikely to revisit evidence-based gun control policy any time soon.

The Hearing Protection Act of 2017—H.R. 367, introduced by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) and John Carter (R-TX)—resurrects a 2015 proposal by then-Arizona Rep. Matt Salmon to ease suppressor ownership restrictions on law-abiding citizens.
For more than 80 years, suppressors have been exiled to a list of National Firearms Act (NFA) items created in 1934—when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in the White House. Ownership of suppressors is generally legal, but qualifying to take one home requires onerous and time-consuming requirements such as, but not limited to, fingerprints, photographs, notifying your local chief law enforcement officer, a background check and a $200 tax stamp.

Members of the group would advertise the guns on social media sites, like Instagram, and tended to meet up in large East Bay store parking lots to make the deals. They were caught after making deals with a confidential informant and an undercover FBI agent, according to a federal indictment that was unsealed over the weekend.

Located in shadowy corners of the Internet are chat rooms and online markets where people use special software to stay anonymous and cover their digital tracks. There's a long-standing trend among gun makers to offer at least a few handguns, rifles, and even some shotguns with threaded barrels, in their line-up. This threading allows various muzzle devices to be attached, which in turn interact with and alter the flow of hot gases that follow bullets out the barrel. The result of attaching a muzzle device is a perceivable change in the gun's behavior, including changes in the levels of muzzle flash, muzzle rise, felt recoil and noise levels.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. — Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith in 1787. Taken from Jefferson, On Democracy p. 20, S. Padover ed., 1939
