In browsing the news recently, this headline stood out among the tripe: “Why carry a whistle when those vulnerable to crime can pack a pistol?” Struck by the logic of the question, I read the article. Only thing is, the writer, never really answered the query. Instead, he focused on how easy it is for people to get their hands on guns and how that’s going to be the downfall of that city, and civilization as he knows it. |

Teller County is gun country with more citizens owning firearms on a per capita basis than practically any burg in the nation, well almost. But on the downside, the region has featured a lack of prime areas for folks to partake in shooting practice and training and public ranges. However, that scenario could soon change, with the formation of a local marksmanship and self-defense group in Cripple Creek, and a push to open up a shooting area near the public works facility. A public meeting of the group is set for Feb. 24 at the Cripple Creek/Victor High School. |

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides U.S. citizens the right to bear arms. The amendment, adopted in 1791, reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” For nearly 228 years, Americans have been debating and arguing over its interpretation, meaning and whether it provides collective gun rights or individual gun rights.

The Deschutes County Commission won’t pass an ordinance prohibiting county resources from being used to enforce state gun laws, but the Redmond resident who pitched the law plans to take it to the ballot box. During a Friday morning work session, all three county commissioners agreed they wouldn’t take up a draft ordinance Redmond resident Jerrad Robison gave them in January. Commissioner Tony DeBone, who brought up the ordinance, said he wanted to make it clear that the county wouldn’t pursue the proposed law. |

The Bernalillo County Sheriff weighed in on the debate over the gun control proposals moving through the state legislature. Sheriff Manny Gonzales says he would support a Second Amendment Sanctuary County. A dozen other counties have already passed sanctuary resolutions. The move is only symbolic showing the county doesn't agree with some of the proposed gun control laws. |

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., faced a mostly - but not completely - friendly crowd of about 150 Saturday morning at his town hall at Bend's Summit High School, which was interrupted - but not ended - by two people who were removed by police, one shouting at the senator, "You're a coward!" For about 90 minutes - most of it livestreamed on KTVZ.COM -- the senator took questions on a variety of issues, such as the environment, the Russia investigation, border security and gun control, drawing frequent applause, such as when he said, "I believe President (Donald) Trump's declaration of a national emergency is unconstitutional, through and through."

Indiana lawmakers are still considering a measure that would arm Hoosier teachers. House bill 1253 would allow schools to use state money to train teachers how to use handguns. It’s a very controversial topic that has many voicing their thoughts. Mark Lee of the Vigo County Teachers Association says safety has always been a priority in Vigo County Schools, but arming teachers is not something the association endorses. "So we're way ahead of the state, way ahead of the nation basically. How we plan for school emergencies is a school safety issue so there's no need for teachers in our school corporation to have guns in the classroom,” said Lee. |

Florence Township municipal officials heard a Police Chief Brian Boldizar propose funding for a vital piece of equipment that his officers lack compared to other municipalities–taser guns. The Florence Township Council listed to the request of Chief Boldizar during a work session that was held on Feb. 13. Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart wants to make sure the public is better protected from people who lose the right to carry guns. Dart is proposing legislation that would create countywide police units to recover weapons from owners who have had their Firearm Owners Identification cards revoked. The units would be led by the county sheriff and include members of the county state's attorney office and local law enforcement. |

The on-going fight and increasing resistance to a wide-ranging, and many believe unconstitutional, gun law passed by Washington State voters last fall is “beginning to resemble a full-scale “constitutionalist” revolt against gun control,” according to a Thursday story in The Guardian, the left-of-center British newspaper.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus gathered for a rally at the State Capitol Saturday. The group is protesting gun control legislation, and arguing in favor of the Second Amendment. “It’s about our inalienable rights to self-defense as Americans. It’s about our right to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government. That’s why our Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights,” said one of the speakers.

Back when this Eastern New Mexico town was founded as a tent city in 1901, it was unofficially known as “Ragtown.” Another nickname — “Six Shooter Siding” — later emerged, reportedly because of the large number of gunfights that took place there. “Six Shooter Siding” would be used by a saloon on Old Route 66. Today, like many old commercial establishments in Tucumcari, Six Shooter Siding is boarded up. And it’s been at least a century or so since the town was renowned for gun violence.

A legislative forum held Saturday saw the attending area legislators asked multiple times about new gun laws, especially one that would allow "strict scrutiny" in the state. The bill would amend the state's constitution to add "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of the right shall be subject to strict scrutiny." |

A Brazos County Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on accusations she defrauded a pharmacy in order to obtain medication.
According to the sheriff’s department, Melissa Louise Melasky, 42, was arrested Friday by Bryan police on charges of obtaining a controlled substance from a pharmacy by fraudulent means. According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, she has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation. Melasky has been with the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office for 19 years.
The charge is a third-degree felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. She was released from the Brazos County Jail on $20,000 bond. |

The NRA magazine The American Rifleman’s March 2019 cover has set off the left. (See update at bottom of article.) Democrats have a short fuse in the gun rights debate anyway, but the current outrage is particularly unserious. The cover features a photo op Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats, including former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, took when Pelosi spoke about universal background check legislation Democrats are putting up for a vote next week.
