Weapons charges against a Maurice River Township man found to be in possession of an antique handgun have been dropped, the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday.
Gordon Van Gilder, 72, of Port Elizabeth, had been returning home Nov. 19 after retrieving a nearly-300-year-old flintlock pistol from a Vineland pawn shop when his vehicle was pulled over by Cumberland County sheriff's officers in Millville. ...
Sheriff's officers cited seeing Van Gilder's vehicle "acting suspiciously in a known drug area" ahead of the traffic stop. |

The firearms bill that stirred hundreds of Vermonters at a Statehouse public hearing is effectively "dead," the head of a key Senate committee says.
The bill's chief sponsor, however, says he still hopes that part of the proposal will move forward.
Supporters of the bill faced strong headwinds, including the opposition of Gov. Peter Shumlin and pushback from Vermont's hunters and police chiefs. The most controversial provision would have required almost all private gun sales to go through a federally licensed firearms dealer and a background check. |

"The Guardian reports that at lunchtime on Tuesday, a Czech man opened fire on patrons at a pub in Uherský Brod, a town in southern Moravia near the border with Slovakia. The shooter killed eight, then committed suicide before he was apprehended. Legislation that would overhaul the process for obtaining a concealed pistol permit in Michigan is nearing the desk of Republican Gov. Rick Snyder -- again.
Snyder vetoed similar legislation late last year, citing concerns with a provision regarding personal protection orders for victims of domestic violence.
Sponsoring Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville, introduced modified bills in January and the upper chamber approved the measures in the first official voting of the new session.
The House approved several other gun-related bills Wednesday, including measures that would exempt corrections officers from gun-free rules and define the term "brandishing" in state law. Those measures head to the Senate for further consideration. |

But they’re not helpful — in fact, they’re inappropriate — when it comes to a discussion of rights.
Take the First Amendment. Its speech clause exists particularly to protect unpopular speech.
“If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable,” Supreme Court Justice William Brennan wrote in 1989.
If there’s no protection for unpopular speech, then there’s no protection of speech at all. |

Open Carry Texas (OCT) plans to bring their cause to Amarillo Saturday.
OCT says Amarillo is the largest city in Texas they have yet to visit.
Members plan to openly carry rifles and shotguns in west Amarillo as part of their effort to gain support for an "open carry" law in Texas.

The Idaho Second Amendment Alliance brought forward the proposed law, dubbed "Constitutional Carry," and is telling individuals to call lawmakers to urge a hearing be held on the bill.
"There are a lot of angry gun owners that want a hearing on House Bill 89," said Greg Pruett, the group's president.
Currently, Idaho residents who want to carry a concealed weapon need a permit. There are two types of permits available in Idaho, one of which requires training and is recognized as valid in some other states. The enhanced permit also allows holders to carry concealed weapons on college and university campuses, but with some restrictions.

he North Dakota House narrowly defeated a bill Tuesday that would have allowed lawmakers and some other public officials to pack heat in the state Capitol and other public buildings, before approving a bill that would allow concealed weapons in public parks.
Representatives voted 45-47 to defeat House Bill 1157, with two members were absent. Lead sponsor Rep. Ben Koppelman said was inspired by the Oct. 22, 2014, shootings at the Canadian parliament in Ottawa. |

Intrepid Washington, D.C. reporter and author Emily Miller yesterday scored “preliminary approval” for one of the very few concealed carry permits issued by the Metropolitan Police Department, but as she noted in her story last night, she’s still a couple of steps away from packing heat in the nation’s capital.
First, the WTTG chief investigative journalist explained, she must first complete an 18-hour course with a certified instructor, and that has to happen within 45 days. After that, Miller said, whether she carries a pistol in the city is her private business. |

The Supreme Court noted that carrying a firearm is a civil right, as established in two separate U.S. Supreme Court rulings. People who have had that right revoked because of a past conviction have to go through legal hurdles to get it back. Citizens who have never been convicted of anything should not be subjected to similar processes.
As Senate Bill 116 would ensure, they should be able to carry concealed without having to ask permission from the government first.

The Senate endorsed legislation Wednesday allowing Kansas adults to carry concealed handguns — loaded or unloaded — without obtaining a state license or participating in a firearms safety course.
Enacting the bill sponsored by 26 of the Senate’s 40 members would amend state law guaranteeing the right of people to openly carry firearms without a permit to include a right to transport concealed weapons absent the permit. |

The Senate today gave key approval to a criminal domestic violence bill that bans gun possession for those convicted of the offense but not before allowing judges to decide whether to forbid guns for the lowest level of offense and for those subject to protective orders.
The final vote was 38-3, with three Upstate senators, all staunch Second Amendment advocates, voting against the bill: Sen. Tom Corbin of Travelers Rest, Sen. Shane Martin of Spartanburg County and Sen. Lee Bright of Spartanburg County. |

A homeowner shot an intruder in North Carolina on Monday, February 23, 2015. An accomplice escaped. The pair broke in through a basement window, then broke down a door to gain access to the house. The homeowner called 911. He armed himself with a 12 gauge shotgun. When the intruders kicked open the basement door and approached him in a hallway, the homeowner shot one once in the chest. The intruder died at the scene. |

Making both local and national news is a proposal by Assemblywoman Michelle Fiore, R-Las Vegas, to overturn college authorities’ right to prohibit carrying of concealed firearms on campuses.
It seems as though liberals find themselves on the horns of a dilemma in opposing her campus carry bill while simultaneously bewailing what they claim is an increase in sexual violence on college campuses.
Fiore said: “If these young, hot little girls on campus have a firearm I wonder how many men will want to assault them … the sexual assaults will go down once these sexual predators get a bullet in their head.”

A bill that would have allowed concealed weapons in Wyoming schools, government meetings and athletic events was heavily amended Wednesday in a Senate committee, provoking a strong reaction from the bill's sponsors.
House Bill 114, originally called the “Wyoming Repeal (of) Gun Free Zones Act,” is now “Gun-free zone modifications.”
The original bill covers three pages. The amended version, which is now a substitute bill, is 14 pages. |

The 24th item on Clarkson’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me” list was that she has “a concealed handgun license.”
In September 2011 Clarkson posted a description of her first time shooting skeet to Facebook. She said it was fun but her right shoulder got pretty sore. A lot of skeet shooters have the same experience their first time shooting as well. |
