When it comes to safety, we can’t know everything ourselves. We also consider the opinions and arguments of experts. These experts collect the wisdom of others, the distilled experience from thousands of lives. Here is a short summary of what I’ve learned. You can weigh the issues for yourself.

From the Self-Defense Instructor-
From the Police-
From Firearms Instructors for Special Teams-
From Academics studying violent crimes-

I’ve met some of these experts, and I’m awed. It takes a strong heart to study violence and not despair.

Who do you believe?

First responders across the state are asking South Carolina lawmakers to amend a law that prohibits them from carrying handguns to emergency scenes.

"It all boils down to safety," Duncan Chapel fire chief Russell Watson said.

Watson said firefighters often encounter dangerous situations involving people.

"Things get heated sometimes. There could be a drug lab or something that we don't know about," he said.

State legislators are altering state laws to encourage business owners to welcome customers with guns by giving them special protections from lawsuits if something goes wrong and someone gets shot.

Legislation approved Wednesday evening by the House Judiciary Committee would spell out that someone injured by another person with a firearm cannot sue a business that allows weapons inside unless there is a proof the business owner “intends to cause injury or acts with gross negligence.’’ But if there is a “no guns’’ sign at the door, the business can be held liable for simple negligence.

Hammer sent out a notice Wednesday to members of the NRA and Unified Sportsmen of Florida, under the title "Florida Report: Sen. Anitere Flores Turns on Law-abiding Gun Owners."

"I cannot tell you why Sen. Flores suddenly turned on law-abiding gun owners because I do not know. (Until yesterday she had a 100% rating with NRA and USF),” Hammer wrote.

The Second Amendment-rights group Florida Carry went further, calling Flores a "turncoat" who unleashed "an anti-gun diatribe" against the pro-gun bills in the Senate, and questioning if she was speaking for herself or Senate President Joe Negron, R-Stuart.

A group of gun control advocates was at the state Capitol to lobby against a proposal to allow people to carry concealed weapons without a permit.

About 75 members of the group Moms Demand Action showed up to urge lawmakers to reject a bill that would relax concealed gun rules. Right now, the state requires a clean criminal record and a safety course. This new bill would allow anyone 21 years or older who’s not barred from owning a firearm to conceal a gun under their clothes or in a vehicle.

What comes next is unclear, but some gun rights advocates are pushing for laws requiring that companies allow guns inside the workplace, something that no state currently mandates but which companies can choose to do voluntarily in Ohio.

Dana Silvey, 32, of Miami Twp., says she agrees with the new law in Ohio, which allows people with concealed-carry permits to store handguns in a locked car on company property.

But Silvey doesn't think it goes far enough.

"An even better idea would be being able to have it in the building," she said. "I think we should be able to protect ourselves. And if you're a law-abiding citizen with a permit, I don't see why not."

What does it mean to be politically liberal and also a Second Amendment supporter? Here's an answer from Jae Seifert, a Colorado resident who is "in favor of legalizing weed and physician-assisted euthanasia. He’s pro-immigrant and believes in civil rights for all Americans. In last year’s election, he was an ardent Bernie Sanders supporter — before he reluctantly backed Hillary Clinton."

Seifert purchased an AR15 in Colorado. “I think that in this country, because we have freedom, with that comes a certain acceptance of risk,” Seifert told Vocativ in a phone interview. “So if you’re going to be free, that also means I have freedom to do things that you may not like, which includes carrying a gun.”

If you read Shooting Illustrated regularly, you’re probably not the type who’ll settle for making do with whatever shotgun you happen to own, even if it’s not ideal for home defense. But many Americans are. Fact is, any gun in the home is better than none for self-defense, and many of those guns are old sporting shotguns like single-shots and double barrels.

Petitioners in the Peruta case asked the Supreme Court to hear the case as soon as possible, taking the issue of concealed carry, a key question in Second Amendment jurisprudence, to the nation’s highest court.

The Peruta case, Peruta v. County of San Diego, was filed by concealed permit applicants who believed the “good cause” requirement for concealed carry permit issuance infringed upon their Second Amendment rights in San Diego and Yolo Counties. The case made national news on February 13, 2014, when a three judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled against the “good cause” requirement, finding it in violation of the Constitution.

The Florida Senate held a tense debate Thursday that sets the stage for passage of a bill that shifts the burden of proof in "stand your ground" cases.

If the full senate approves the new legislation, it would increase the amount of protection gunowners have when they claim self-defense.

Currently, the burden of proof is on the person claiming self-defense to prove they were in fact threatened or in imminent danger.

If the new law passes, the burden shifts to prosecutors who would have to prove self-defense wasn't warranted.

The Second Amendment and 'weapons of war'

The express purpose of the Second Amendment was to guarantee the continued maintenance of an armed populace. In fact, the Second Militia Act of 1792 legally required every adult able-bodied white American male to own and maintain “weapons of war” (a musket or rifle, bayonet, powder and bullets) just in case the militia had to be called out.

Even in the 1939 case usually cited to justify victim disarmament (“gun control”) laws, U.S. v. Miller, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the reason Jack Miller's short-barreled shotgun could be banned was that it WASN’T a weapon of war: “[I]t is not within judicial notice that this weapon is any part of the ordinary military equipment or that its use could contribute to the common defense.”

The most recent changes allow anyone who is at least 21 years old and who has a concealed carry license to carry on a public higher ed campus as long as they undergo eight hours of training. The bill now also greatly expands the different locations these concealed carriers can bring handguns, including the state Capitol and some bars. Authors of the amended bill call it a compromise. Here’s one of them, Republican Senate Majority Leader Jim Hendren of Gravette.

The group’s funding was pulled last minute over spring break when the university’s presidents changed.

“They did it under our noses, just slipped it in there and didn’t really tell anybody,” Jeremy Grunden, the group’s vice president told UD Review.

Callaway and her group are receiving support from the NRA, Second Amendment Foundation and advocates for gun rights. They have also received discounts from local gun stores.

The group’s focus has now been turned to fighting for campus carry instead of campus administration.

Gun manufacturer Remington Arms has laid off 122 workers at its flagship plant.

Slowing sales and a growing inventory are blamed for the workforce cut at Herkimer County’s largest employer, according to a statement from the company. Unlike layoffs that occurred several years ago, the latest cuts in Ilion are apparently not a result of work being moved to other Remington facilities.

The unionized Ilion employees are represented by United Mine Workers Local 717. Based in Madison. N.C., the privately owned company is a leading domestic producer of ammunition, shotguns and rifles.

State and federal representatives reacted to the news.

The Ramsey Borough Council once again has delayed voting on an ordinance that could block a proposed gun range, NorthJersey.com reports.

Borough Attorney Peter Scandariato told NorthJersey.com that it was tabled to allow time for him and a law firm assisting the borough on a pro bono basis to look into recent Second Amendment cases and possibly revise the ordinance, the story says. An application for a 60,000 square-foot gun range is currently pending before the planning board.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To have no proud monarch driving over me with his gilt coaches; nor his host of excise-men and tax-gatherers insulting and robbing me; but to be my own master, my own prince and sovereign, gloriously preserving my national dignity, and pursuing my true happiness; planting my vineyards, and eating their luscious fruits; and sowing my fields, and reaping the golden grain: and seeing millions of brothers all around me, equally free and happy as myself. This, sir, is what I long for. -- General Francis Marion, American War of Independence, Georgetown, SC [Source: 'Marion, The Life of Gen. Francis Marion' by M. L. Weems, Ch.18]
