Evergreen State gun owners received a strong signal Friday that they may be soon facing another citizen initiative, this time aimed at so-called “assault weapons,” after the Democrat-controlled state legislature failed to pass a bill that would have raised the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21 years.

This came just hours before Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed new gun control legislation, breaking with the National Rifle Association and other gun rights groups. Florida has now set 21 years as the minimum age to purchase a rifle, and there will be a three-day waiting period.

Each aisle she turned down, he seemed to be there. By the shelves of Cap’n Crunch and Cocoa Puffs. By the cans of chicken noodle soup and pinto beans and pasta sauce. By the rows of fresh lettuce. And when Jacee Cole went to check out, he was there by the cash registers, too. She didn’t know who he was or what he wanted or why he was watching her. “I think I’m being followed,” she whispered to her mom on her phone.

He bought the 9-inch-by-12-inch inserts from a Sarpy County security firm and says the $120 panels give his kids a protective edge if a school shooting ever occurs. And they give parents some peace of mind.

“Some people have confused this with a Second Amendment question,” said Fulton. “It’s not. This is about civil rights of people who wish to legally purchase and own a firearm for sporting reasons, hunting, home protection, whatever.

For the second time, the Second Amendment Foundation is suing a public housing authority in the state of Illinois, challenging a prohibition on firearms in such housing.

The first time SAF did this was about five years ago in a case called Winbigler v. Warren County Housing Authority. This time around, SAF is joined by the Illinois State Rifle Association on behalf of a woman living in a unit operated by the East St. Louis Housing Authority (ESLHA). It’s not the first time SAF and ISRA have teamed up on a case.

There is no such thing as a safe space from shooters, but gun-control advocates have succeeded in creating a safe space for shooters. When quacks like Nikolas Cruz want to massacre innocent people, like what occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week, there’s no time to wait on a 911 call. Law enforcement response times are too slow. According to research from the Department of Homeland Security, the average school shooting lasts 12.5 minutes, while the average police response time is 18 minutes.

I don’t share the same slavish devotion to the Second Amendment as some of my fellow conservatives. For the life of me, I can’t understand why the average gun owner would ever have need of a bump stock. Like many card-carrying NRA members, I would argue that requiring background checks for all gun sales hardly seems like trampling the Constitution.

The two chambers passed a budget Saturday morning, the last scheduled day of the session, but could not break an impasse on the construction legislation until after 10:00 p.m. that night, at which point was too late to write a new bill, vote on it, sign it and deliver it to Gov. Matt Mead for his approval.

It happens without fail. A mass shooting occurs somewhere in the country. Politicians nationwide begin to squabble over gun control. Firearm sales increase. That's the reality, local proprietors say, but not one they choose to embrace. Ben Beauchemin, owner of Wicked Weaponry in Hooksett, and John Cavaretta, who owns Chester Arms in Derry, each acknowledge sales have gone up since the Feb. 14 high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., just as they did following the Las Vegas massacre in October and other mass shootings across the United States.
