While New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced there will be new gun control laws within ten days because of the mosque attacks last Friday that left 50 people dead, the head of the New Zealand Police Association has declared that gun advocates should not have a voice in the process.

It’s a scenario that gun prohibitionists in the United States would welcome, but for that pesky Bill of Rights. The First Amendment protects the right of firearms advocates to speak, and the Second Amendment protects the right to have firearms, while also protecting the First, say rights activists.

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday could return, but there's no new effort to resurrect Louisiana's hurricane and back-to-school sales tax holidays. Louisiana Rep. Jay Morris, of Monroe, introduced the bill three weeks before the start of the 2019 Legislative Session.

Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a bill to create a statewide firearm registry. Under the "firearm registration act" owners would have to provide state police with the make, model, and serial number of all guns. They would also be subject to an annual background check. They'd also be required to submit fingerprints and photographs of their guns - and pay a $10 fee to state police for the processing of such information.

New Jersey has been releasing information on illegal guns used in crimes for about a year now, including where those weapons came from. The state announced an expansion of that effort at an event in Jersey City. Eighty percent of the illegal weapons come from out of state, many from Pennsylvania or down south where gun laws are not as stringent as they are in New Jersey. Now, Gov. Phil Murphy is taking the next step: including the manufacturer in monthly and quarterly reports.

Guess what? Women are still shopping for and buying guns across the United States, and they may not be the type of women you think. This growing demographic remains vital to the preservation of our shooting sports heritage. Don’t be fooled by the mainstream media who highlights women groups proclaiming they are for gun safety, but in reality, they are anti-gun, as the majority voice for all women; from my experience, it couldn't be farther from the truth.

Senate Bill 801 would allow, but not require, public and private schools to have a 30 minute class on firearm safety and accident prevention for first graders. The proposed bill says that the class must be taught by a teacher, administrator, law enforcement agent or “first responder.” None of these people are required to be firearms instructors. “First responder” is not defined in the bill.

“This conflict over the 2nd amendment and the attempted removal of firearms rights will ultimately result in a civil war that will eventually balkanize the US along political, cultural and, most importantly, racial lines,” wrote the Christchurch, New Zealand mass murderer in his demented manifesto. Some Americans, unfortunately, immediately used the bloodbath to support their political causes.

Over the weekend, my colleague Kevin Williamson wrote an outstanding piece illuminating the ideology and opportunism behind a Connecticut Supreme Court opinion holding that the manufacturer of the semi-automatic rifle used in the Sandy Hook shooting may be held liable for violating state unfair-trade-practices statutes. The legal reasoning behind the ruling, if applied broadly, would directly defy federal law and could potentially deal a staggering financial blow to firearms manufacturers and sellers in the United States.

It was a match made in heaven, as the saying goes. For Mike and Sarah Ruhs, heaven could well mean a field full of pheasants or a deer stand in the woods. The couple have been married for 12 years, but long before that both were avid hunters and always enjoyed the outdoors.

Environment Committee Democrats flexed their muscles Monday and completely rewrote a bill that would have allowed a black bear hunt in Litchfield County. The new bill expands the current law for issuing permits to deal with nuisance wildlife. Rep. Michael DeMicco, D-Farmington, said the new language adopted by the committee Monday amends current law, which already allows the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner to issue a permit to kill wildlife that’s doing unreasonable damage to an agricultural crop. The new language expands that to livestock, poultry or bees.

Presidential candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’ Rourke (D-TX) attracted quite a bit of attention over the weekend with his comments on AR-15’s. In what seems to be an attempted balancing act to play to both gun owners and the gun confiscation crowd O’ Rourke said, “If you own an AR-15, keep it. Continue to use it responsibly and safely.” He then followed up his statement by adding “I just don’t think that we need to sell anymore weapons of war into this public.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The NRA has a point about the inadvisability of simply taking guns away from the populace. If that were possible, it would not disarm that small percentage of the population willing to break the law.... Punishing people who obey the law is backward thinking. — Hugh Downs, Veteran ABC newsman
