"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a linchpin as a pin 'that serves to hold together parts or elements that exist or function as a unit.' Such pins are quite common on axles of automobiles and other vehicles, where they literally hold a nut in place behind the hub and thereby keep the wheels from flying off."

"... Suffice it to say, linchpins are important."

"Not surprisingly, it has been said that the Second Amendment is the linchpin of the Bill of Rights. In other words, if removed, the remaining amendments might stand for a time or they might fall suddenly beside it: either way, they certainly will fall." ...

... "The only reason, of course, that Obama would need the 'flexibility' of not being held accountable at the polls for negotiating away the American people's missile defense security is that he is fully aware that doing so when he can be held accountable would be disastrous for his personal ambitions. And come to think of it, missile defense is almost certainly not the only issue on which he looks forward to such flexibility." ...

"In recent days a great deal of ill-informed commentary has appeared about the 'stand your ground' self-defense law enacted in Florida and many other states since 2005 (earlier) and how if at all it applies to the February 26 confrontation between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. The Orlando Sentinel invited me to sort things out for readers and the resulting op-ed is here."

"Increasingly the outrage over the death of Trayvon Martin in Florida is turning into a debate about what really happened."

"A lot of people think there is something (or many things) wrong with the conventional story of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager who was shot in Florida by a man named George Zimmerman, and the national drama that has followed it."

"Some people don't believe the original telling of the story in which Martin was innocently strolling home from a 7-11 back to his father's house, when a paranoid racist neighborhood watchman profiled him, called the cops on him, and chased him before shooting and killing him, only to be let go by bumbling or racist cops."

"The .17 caliber is hardly new. It probably first achieved popularity among Australian fox hunters more than 50 years ago. The Down Under rabbit infestation is well known, but for the boom in foxes that followed, the little .17 seemed just the ticket. The bullet would enter, do its work, but not exit, thus minimizing pelt damage. In the 1960s good old American wildcatters started necking various small centerfire cases (including the .22 Hornet) down to .17, and the caliber found favor with quite a few serious stateside varminters." ...

"Sometimes you are the go-to guy or girl. You are the one in your peer group or social network that appears to know the most about firearms. This is a more weighty responsibility than one might think. In our office, I imagine more so than some places of employment, we talk about guns … a lot. ... But we assume certain knowledge, a certain level of experience and a certain physiognomy that affect how we discuss firearms."

"I am often asked advice outside the office, and I have been confronted with questions about firearms from less-experienced new shooters and women more and more in recent months. Those questions and some recent range time have given me some new insight on the advice I give. ..." ...

"Reader Steven Dimino asked we take a look at some of the lower-priced 1911s out there. Easier said than done! We put this together at the end of the giant gun buying frenzy not long ago, so it was like asking for blood out of that proverbial turnip from some of the makers. We did the best we could, but if we deincluded your favorite, we’ll try again later ..."

"I really appreciate highly customized 1911s just like anyone else does; however, like most folks I’m on a budget, and more often than not, my budget is a beer budget — not a champagne one. "Pietta of Italy is known for making reproductions of a variety of cowboy action guns, but a few years ago they came out with something with a wider market appeal: a .22 LR based on the design of the classic Soviet PPSh-41 from World War II called the Puma PPS .22 LR."

"BallisticsByTheInch.com was able to borrow an almost-new one of these for the .22 tests last summer. And as far as similarities between the two, the Pietta Puma PPS has the wooden stock, long heat shield covering the majority of the barrel, and even had a 50-round drum magazine. As you can imagine the replica looked just as mean, but then we started the tests." ...

"Recently, I asked some gun owners I know their feelings about carrying a derringer in this day and age of polymer frame whiz bangs, deep concealed carry pocket pistols and snub nosed revolvers. Most perked up at the mention of the name and said that derringers intrigued them but few responded that they would actively carry one, usually stating something like they thought there were better self defense options out there, so what’s the point? Well, considering that Henry Deringer’s original palm pistol concept has sold continuously since 1852 and been copied more times than calculus homework, I had to wonder why?" ...

"Simon Glik, the attorney who last year forced the First Circuit Court of Appeals to affirm that recording police in public is not a crime, will receive a $170,000 settlement from the City of Boston, stemming from his 2007 arrest for recording police in a public park."

"Even though criminal charges against Glik were quickly dismissed, it took five years to settle the case because police were seeking qualified immunity in making unlawful arrests, which would have protected them from such lawsuits."

"Obviously, they were under the impression that the long-standing legal principle of ignorance of the law excuses no one did not apply to them." ...

"A white police officer targeted Latino drivers for traffic stops because of their race, a Los Angeles Police Department investigation concluded -- marking the first time the agency has found one of its officers guilty of racial profiling."

"For decades, the question of racial profiling -- 'biased policing,' in LAPD jargon -- has bedeviled the LAPD. Accusations that the practice was commonplace in minority neighborhoods throughout the 1970s and '80s helped earn the LAPD a reputation for bias and abuse of power."

"And, despite dramatic reforms that have boosted the department’s image over the last 10 years, the persistence of profiling claims has prevented the agency from shaking its dark past altogether. ..." ...

"Kudos to the writer of a well-worded Letter to the Editor in Friday's Journal regarding contraception ('Contraception isn't a constitutional right')."

"The writer correctly points out that contraception is not a constitutional right and a person is not entitled to free contraception medicines or devices. I like the comparison to NRA members demanding free firearms because the Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment is a clear constitutional provision whereas the court-created right-to-privacy (a penumbra of the Constitution) is not. Yet, no NRA members endorse free firearms or ammunition." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Nations and peoples who forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms. — Robert Heinlein
