While it has deep roots in the very beginnings of the Western notion of liberty, the Molon Labe flag was likely never flown by the earliest patriots. In fact, the main reason it resonates today is for its history as a militant stance against tyrants – Persian tyrants to be exact. “Molon labe” is a phrase that began during the Persian War, when the Persian Empire (then the biggest power in the world) was looking to expand from Asia into Europe. As an attempt to conquer the Greek City States, Darius of Persia sent his emissaries on a quest for a token tribute – “earth and water” – and almost all complied except one. Sparta told the Persians where to go using the laconic phrase, “dig it out for yourself.” |
MS: Mississippi Girls Killed Mother in Self-Defense

A defense lawyer suggested Tuesday that two Mississippi girls killed their mother in self-defense and that sheriff’s deputies may have questioned them improperly. “I can tell you that I anticipate my client and her sister are both going to be defended on a theory of self-defense,” lawyer Greg Malta told reporters following a hearing for the 14-year-old defendant. She’s charged with murder in the Jan. 4 death of her mother, Ericka Hall, near Magnolia, just north of the Louisiana state line. |

Corpus Christi police are investigating a shooting on the 5900 block of Weber that sent one woman to the hospital. According to police, it was around 10 p.m. Monday when two women and two of their friends knocked on a man's door asking for money. The man opened the door and refused to give money, and the woman pepper sprayed him. In self-defense, the man shot one of the women. |

After recent violent incidents in Dougherty County, District Attorney Greg Edwards wants to ensure you understand your rights with the Stand Your Ground Law. Edwards said deadly force can be used to defend yourself, especially using the Castle Doctrine. The doctrine states you can defend yourself in your home from invasions and not have to refrain from using deadly force in self-defense. |

Playing Pokémon Go was supposed to be a way for Jiansheng Chen to connect with his grandchildren. On Jan. 26, 2017, the 60-year-old left Royal China, the restaurant his family owns in Chesapeake, Va., and headed to the community clubhouse in the suburban River Walk neighborhood. Located about half a mile from his house in the winding subdivision, it was well known to local Pokémon Go players as a “gym” where they could score extra points by competing in virtual battles. According to prosecutors, Chen was sitting by himself outside the building in his blue minivan about 11 p.m. when Johnathan Cromwell, 21, a security guard, pulled up and confronted him about trespassing after hours. Chen put the car in reverse. |

The campus carry bill, House Bill 2519, suffered a possibly fatal blow Tuesday when the Senate Judiciary Committee voted it down 7-9. Two Republicans joined with seven Democrats in voting against the measure. Senators still could move to have the vote reconsidered or have it discharged from committee, but Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, said he doesn’t expect that to happen.

A double shooting on Milwaukee's north side in which one man was killed and another wounded was committed in self defense, Milwaukee police said Tuesday. Quadir L. Black, 37, was fatally shot shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of West Medford Avenue, police said.

The Washington State House of Representatives passed Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s legislation to prohibit the manufacturing of untraceable, undetectable 3D printed guns on Monday. House Bill 1739 would prohibit “a person from knowingly or recklessly allowing, facilitating, aiding, or abetting the manufacture or assembly of an undetectable firearm or untraceable firearm if he or she: (1) Is ineligible to possess a firearm; or (2) Has signed a valid voluntary waiver of firearm rights that has not been revoked.” Click here to read more. |

A measure that would allow 18- to 20-year-olds to carry a concealed weapon without a permit throughout Idaho has moved forward in the Legislature. People 21 and older already have that right in Idaho. But that law, passed in 2016, excluded 18- to 20-year-olds from carrying a concealed handgun within the limits of any city unless they have a conceal carry permit. Under the legislation, that exception would go away.

The New American published an article last August citing the latest report from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) showing that nearly two million Americans obtained their concealed-carry permits in 2016, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down. The article observed that most of the growth in gun ownership is taking place among women and minorities, partly because of concerns about personal safety.

A police officer with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection has been arrested on charges of manufacturing guns at his upstate home and selling them to motorcycle gang members.
Thirty-eight-year-old Gregg Marinelli is also charged with tipping off a suspect in a major drug investigation, state police and the Orange County district attorney's office said.
Police say Marinelli assembled dozens of handguns and assault rifles and sold them to "individuals who are legally barred from possessing such weapons" including members of outlaw motorcycle clubs. Many of the guns Marinelli sold had no serial numbers and would be difficult to trace, authorities said. |

Moffat County is now officially a “sanctuary county,” at least for the purposes of protecting Second Amendment rights. On Tuesday morning, March 5, the Moffat County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution declaring it will not support an attempt by Colorado's Legislature to curb Second Amendment rights in any way.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson released a “Frequently Asked Questions” document on Initiative 1639 on March 4, sending letters to all 39 sheriffs across the state. In his letter, Ferguson highlights examples of misunderstandings from news reports. The FAQ document addresses points he says caused confusion. Washington state residents approved the initiative by a vote of nearly 60 percent last November. |

A New Hampshire House committee hearing Tuesday grew contentious as opposing sides debated the proposed "Red Flag" law, which would allow for the removal of firearms from those deemed at risk of harming themselves or others.
House Bill 687 would enable family members and law enforcement to petition the court for temporary removal of guns. Opponents not only criticized the proposal, which they said infringes on their Second Amendment rights, diminishes due process and has the potential for abuse, but also protested that the hearing was moved to the Representatives' Hall, which the House has designated a gun-free zone. |

Seventeen people have been shot in Chicago over the weekend, six of whom were wounded in a single shooting at a South Side bar. Gunfire erupted at 3:43 a.m. inside the private lounge, located in the 2900 block of East 79th Street in the South Shore neighborhood, Chicago police said. Witnesses told investigators they were dancing at the club when shots rang out and people fell to the floor, police said. A 24-year-old woman told detectives she heard gunshots before feeling a bullet rip through her leg. |

Illinois gun owners and rights activists are fired up, protesting proposed gun control legislation that would outlaw so-called “assault weapons,” according to one of the state’s leading Second Amendment advocates, who says it’s part of the “sanctuary” movement, and it’s gathering momentum.
According to the Belleville News-Democrat, there are currently 26 counties in the state that consider themselves “Second Amendment sanctuaries.” |

Over the last couple years, I’ve started paying more attention to the skills we practice ostensibly in relation to using a handgun for self-defense and their actual frequency of use in reality. Conversely, there are skills that frequently show up in defensive encounters that are, unfortunately, almost never practiced. |
