Police are unlikely to file charges in the shooting death of an 82-year-old man, saying his son fired in self-defense.

The Tuscaloosa News reports Archie McDaniel may have suffered from dementia. Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit assistant commander Capt. Kip Hart says McDaniel's 40-year-old son shot him after McDaniel threatened to kill him and fired a shot that grazed him before turning his weapon on another son early Monday.

Police did not say why the man to be charged, Cornell Brown, and a 68-year-old man were arguing with each other Sunday night (April 16). But about 8:25 p.m., Brown left the 1200 block of Spain Street only to return with a revolver, which police said he pointed at the older man.

In response, the older man pulled out a gun and shot Brown in the right forearm, police said. Brown was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said, and is expected to be arrested and booked with aggravated assault. The shooter is believed to have fired in self-defense, police said.

Currently, Florida law says a person can use Stand Your Ground as a defense if the person has reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm to himself or herself when using or threatening to use defensive force that would cause death or harm to another individual.

The Florida Legislature is working to strengthen self-defense claims that come with Stand Your Ground laws.

On March 15, SB 128 was passed by the Senate by a margin of 23-15.

The new legislation says that the state has the burden of proving that a defendant is not immune from prosecution under certain circumstances.

Eliminating the District of Columbias comprehensive handgun ban had almost no effect on homicides committed with or without such firearms in the nations capital, according to an analysis by The Daily Caller News Foundations Investigative Group.

Nearly 80 percent of all D.C. homicide victims from 2000 through 2007 were killed with a gun, city and federal data compiled by The Washington Post and analyzed by TheDCNF found. That figure dropped to 74 percent after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller that Washingtons handgun ban was unconstitutional in 2008.

Assemblywoman Melissa A. Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore, announced Democrats killed her bill, Assembly Bill 757, in the Assembly Public Safety Committee. This legislation would have made California a shall issue state by making self-defense a just qualifier to receiving a concealed carry weapon permit.

Today the Democrat majority spat in the face of the Constitution by killing this measure, Melendez said last week. The Constitution guarantees equal protection under the law, yet the current system we have for issuing CCWs in California is anything but equal. Rest assured; this fight for equality isnt over.

The 2017 Florida legislature is currently working to bolster the states Stand Your Ground laws by requiring the state to disprove a Stand Your Ground claim in a pre-trial hearing. This puts the onus on the state rather than the law-abiding citizen andif the state fails to disprove the claim in the pre-trial hearingeliminates the need for a trial. Yet even though Stand Your Ground has proven more beneficial for black defendants on a percentage basis than whites, and even though Zimmerman did not use a Stand Your Ground defense, The New York Times is warring against lawmakers efforts to bolster Stand Your Ground by pointing to American Bar Association claims that Stand Your Ground is a bad law.

Gun-control legislation debated Monday morning had a new bill to call home by the afternoon. Provisions of Senate Bill 868 are set to have a work session Tuesday morning as Senate Bill 719. The move is a bit of a "gut and stuff," as the original words of SB 719 a fairly innocuous measure to study how to make courts more effective are yanked in an amendment to make room for SB 868's moves.

Although many opponents of constitutional carry say that the law will be a cause of increased gun violence, the lowest murder rates in the country as of 2010 were Vermont, Wyoming and North Dakota all states that allow constitutional carry, according to the FBI.

This bill in Tennessee is described as slightly tougher than a full constitutional carry law, according to WBIR.com, because it is just reducing the penalty to $25 for permit-less gun carriers, not abolishing the penalty altogether.

A proposal by Sen. Barrow Peacock, a Bossier City Republican, would place new limits on Louisiana's sales tax holiday for hunting supplies, known as the Second Amendment sales tax holiday. On the first weekend of September, state sales taxes still wouldn't be charged on firearms, ammunition and archery supplies, but the sales tax holiday would no longer apply to off-road vehicles, airboats, hunting clothes and some other items. The measure won narrow support from the committee, in a 4-3 vote.

The people who think the Second Amendment phrase well-regulated means not regulated at all are back.

This time, theyre pushing a dangerous idea called concealed carry reciprocity that would allow people who get concealed gun carry permits in states that have absolutely no restrictions to carry those hidden, loaded guns anywhere in the country.

That means a state such as Illinois could no longer draw a line and refuse to give concealed carry permits to people convicted of violent misdemeanors, substance abusers, repeat drunken drivers or who have severe mental health issues.

The bills were crafted to not curtail the rights of legal, responsible gun owners, only to make it harder for those who shouldnt possess such weapons. But they did not meet the General Assemblys annual crossover deadline, meaning no new law is possible this session. Besides, Gov. Henry McMaster had not signaled whether he would sign it.

What did make it in time to be considered for passage this year? A bill that would make it legal for residents to carry guns concealed or openly without a permit or training. It passed the House and is being considered in the Senate this week. McMaster said he would sign it if it reaches his desk.

Jeff Coopers book, To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth, contained a chapter titled: The Role of the Five. The focus of this chapter was to offer insight into the five categories of small arms. These included the pistol, rifle, carbine, shotgun and machine pistol. (Cooper noted that a machine gun took a full-size rifle cartridge and was a crew-served weapon.) Here, we sort of play on that essay, but focus on the role of the five most prevalent cartridges in use today. A man equipped with a battery consisting of firearms chambered for these is equipped for just about anything.

Black Guns Matter will expand its outreach program to all 50 states, hoping to fill the gap between firearms education and the inner city communities so often left out of the conversation, group founder Maj Toure told Guns.com Monday.

I am proposing amendments that reflect the common sense I believe most Montanans value. My amendment will clarify that a person may only carry concealed in restaurants where alcohol is not served.

The National Rifle Associations Institute for Legislative Action has condemned the veto, arguing Bullock is trying to camouflage his continued opposition to the self-defense rights of law-abiding citizens, as it is already legal to carry a concealed firearm in a restaurant that does not serve alcohol.

The Montana Legislature is currently on recess. Bullocks amendments will be considered when the Legislature reconvenes next Tuesday.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad signed a comprehensive bill, HF 517, to modernize Iowa's gun laws on Thursday, 14 April, 2017. The reforms had been bottled up for years by a few legislators, mostly Democrats, that were voted out of office last year. An archaic provision prevented children form receiving safety training for handguns.

NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox took to NRATV Monday to announce that President Donald Trump will be speaking at the National Rifle Association Annual Meetings & Exhibits next week in Atlanta, Ga.

During his appearance, Cox spoke on President Trumps historic first 100 days: "We now have a Supreme Court back on the side of individual freedom, back on the side of the Second Amendment," he said. "We have someone in the White House who supports the Second Amendment. Thats a big shocker after 8 years of Barack Obama."

The Alabama Senate will vote on a legislation that would allow people to carry a concealed handgun without a getting a permit.

Senators on Tuesday evening will debate the proposal by Republican Sen. Gerald Allen of Tuscaloosa.

The bill has been heavily criticized by some law enforcement officers who say the permits are needed for public safety. Allen argued that people shouldn't have to pay to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

A heated dispute between a sportsmens club and its neighbors is coming to a head. People living nearby say they fear for their safety while members of the club say they believe their gun rights are in jeopardy.

The matter goes before the Zoning Board of Appeals at a hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria of Westminster Elementary School on Academy Hill Road.

In February, Building Inspector Paul R. Blanchard issued a cease-and-desist order for all activities at the Westminster Rod and Gun Club. Members appealed the determination and hired Worcester attorney Justin H. Raphaelson.
