However, I want the pro-gun community to understand that there is a group of us who needs to be confronted and corrected or — disavowed. I have been using the term "Second Amendment absolutists" to describe them in previous discussion for quite a few years. An abolutist[sic] thinks the Second Amendment allows anyone to own any gun at any time and at any location they choose.

Shelby Township Deputy Chief Mark Coil was disciplined internally after he allegedly placed his gun on a table while he and others were at a bar in Grand Rapids this past winter.
No criminal charges have been filed.
The alleged incident occurred when Coil and other officers were in Grand Rapids for the Chief’s Conference, held at the Amway Hotel.
According to the report, the gun was out for about five to seven seconds.
About 15 minutes after the alleged incident, Coil apologized to the bar employee at whom the gun had been pointed for scaring him, the report states.
According to a police report, the bar employee said he didn’t feel threatened and didn’t feel like Coil was acting in a threatening manner. |

Prosecutors with the State Attorney’s Office have declined to file charges against a man who shot and wounded another man on a dirt road in Weirsdale a few months ago.
Assistant State Attorney Toby Hunt, in a one-page memorandum outlining his reasoning for not moving forward with the case, cited that the defendant, Ronald L. Jones, has a “Stand Your Ground Claim, as the State has no ability to disprove that either the victim did not intentionally ram his truck into the defendant’s vehicle or that the victim’s following the defendant too closely caused the two vehicles to collide.” |

A proposed gun range and shop on McLean Boulevard in Elgin was moved along by the City Council Wednesday night by a 5-4 vote — and a lawsuit involving the City of Chicago was part of the decision-making process.
...
Elgin Corporate Counsel William Cogley reviewed a memo he had sent council members regarding two federal cases successfully filed by Rhonda Ezell versus the city of Chicago.
The first ruling, from 2011, meant Chicago had to do away with a gun range ban throughout the city, meaning the city had to come up with own rules and regulations for where it would allow gun ranges to operate in its boundaries. |

Gov. Jim Justice has signed bills authorizing Sunday hunting on private land, regulating the carrying of firearms in state and county parks and allowing concealed weapons permit holders to leave a gun in their cars while picking children up or dropping them off at school.
The bills, House Bill 2679 and Senate Bill 388, were among measures signed by the governor before the signing deadline expired at midnight Wednesday. |

The fever-pitch national hysteria over gun rights ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential elections has all but disappeared now that Donald Trump is president. In terms of federal action directly affecting Second Amendment rights, nothing has changed since President Barack Obama's departure. The absence of an easily identifiable demon in Washington has frustrated gun makers and their top lobbyists. |

President Trump's relationship with the Republican Party is well known, but just what exactly makes him a conservative? Well, for one thing, it could be his love for the National Rifle Association (NRA). The president will address the NRA's annual convention on Friday in Atlanta and, as it turns out, Trump himself owns a gun or two.
Trump's NRA convention speech could take place in front of an audience of up to 80,000 Second-Amendment supporters. In addition to the president, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue are expected to attend the convention, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. |

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley says gun owners don’t need a “good reason” to exercise their constitutional rights.
Calley, who has signaled his 2018 run for governor, spoke at a Second Amendment rally at the Capitol Wednesday. He warned activists to not let gun-control advocates “drag you into having to create a justification to keep and bear arms.”
Calley says reasons to have a gun include hunting and personal protection, but gun owners need no reason because of the Second Amendment. |

After the heavily backed and massively popular ballot measure, Initiative 1491, passed with 69 percent of the popular vote in Washington last November, lawmakers in Olympia have proposed legislation to protect gun rights from further restrictions.
The initiative has not significantly changed the type of legislation introduced this session, according to Rick Halle, national coordinator for the Gun Rights Coalition, but he believes it sets a precedent for future restrictions sought by gun-control groups in Washington State. |

The House and Senate have both backed passing a bill that would shift a key burden of proof in “stand your ground” cases, but they have taken different stances on an important legal detail.

For decades, the gun lobby has facilitated concealed carry and “stand your ground” legislation in large part by focusing on the racialized threat of lurking criminals or rapists. Today, as the number of states with stand your ground laws grows and the president himself is set to deliver a keynote address, that anxiety is being funneled into the fear of going to court—or being jailed—for killing someone when you shoot them. (Over the last five years, however, studies have shown that the best indicators of whether your self-defense argument will keep you out of prison are generally your gender and the color of your skin.) |

The 4th Circuit’s affirmation of Maryland’s gun ban is the latest lower-court decision intended to eviscerate Heller.
In February, the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit upheld the wide-ranging ban on semi-automatic rifles that was enacted in Maryland in 2013. The case was Kolbe v. Hogan.
This was just the latest example of a federal court disregarding the Second Amendment and Supreme Court precedent to uphold a ban on highly popular firearms. But it was also the most egregious and far-reaching decision to date. |

Groups of demonstrators began trickling into Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park in downtown Berkeley on Thursday as police swarmed the city.
Among the activists at the park was Stewart Rhodes, founder of the citizen militia group known as the Oath Keepers. Rhodes and his group had also gathered in Berkeley on April 15, when a planned “Patriots Day” rally erupted in clashes between pro-Trump demonstrators and counter-protesters.
"We are only here for self-defense," Rhodes said. His role, he said, was "to keep the hotheads in check." |

Legislation allowing permitted elected officials to carry firearms inside a courthouse passed Tuesday out of the Oklahoma Senate with a vote of 38 to 6.
House Bill 1104 would allow elected officials of a county, who are in possession of a valid handgun license issued pursuant to the provisions of the Oklahoma Self Defense Act, when acting in the performance of their duties as an elected official to carry a concealed firearm within the courthouses of the county in which he or she was elected. |

Some area Realtors already are changing their business practices.
After the meeting, Mary Mauger of Century 21-Bradley Realty in Fort Wayne, said she turned down a potential client when, she said, “nothing added up.”
She now carries Mace with her on a lanyard around her neck along with the card allowing her to open lock boxes.
Brenda Williams, also with Century 21-Bradley, said she wants prospective clients to know that if a Realtor asks for ID, they’re not being singled out.
“So please don’t be offended,” she said. |

In its list of use-of-force policy changes or reaffirmations, IACP does not outright dismiss the addition of warning shots to the officer’s tool box.
“… A warning shot must have a defined target and shall not be fired unless (1) the use of deadly force is justified; (2) the warning shot will not pose a substantial risk of injury or death to the officer or others; and (3) the officer reasonably believes that the warning shot will reduce the possibility that deadly force will have to be used,” the report, “National Consensus on Use of Force Policy,” notes. |

If you prefer a long arm, conventional wisdom has it pump-action shotguns are the best choice for journeymen homeowners. The shuck, shuck sound of a shotshell being chambered is often said to be enough for a criminal to fill his drawers. I saw it work once in grade school, when my gun-fearing mother sent a house thief packing by pumping the family's unloaded 16 gauge. I don't know for a fact he needed an underwear change, but he did drop the crowbar in mid-kitchen-door pry, and it remained in our trunk for years—a utilitarian and mobile trophy, of sorts. However, the less you have to do with a self-defense firearm, the better, and this is where the Mossberg 930 SPX 12-gauge shotgun shines.
