The Obama administration is locked and loaded for a fresh push on gun control initiatives – reportedly moving to advocate for so-called "smart gun" technology as early as Friday, despite concerns from the gun lobby.
“Police officers in general, federal officers in particular, shouldn’t be asked to be the guinea pigs in evaluating a firearm that nobody’s even seen yet,” James Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, told Politico.
Submitters note: If the federal government thinks this technology is so damn good, they should have to use it. How about starting with Obama's secrete service detail. |

Following reports of people carrying guns with them when they voted in schools for the primary election, Ann Arbor Public Schools is still exploring the legality of enforcing its no-weapon policy during elections.
"We still have matters to work through with the city and legal folks," said board of education trustee Simone Lightfoot. "We're so limited in what we can do at this stage."
Caught between the school's no-weapon policy and the need to protect voters' rights to cast their ballots free of interference or intimidation, the board of education felt its best option was to cancel classes during the May 3 special election to avoid putting students and staff in proximity of people who chose to carry guns with them when they vote. |

Local police chiefs and sheriffs typically swear to enforce the laws of their state. But a group called the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association is intent on strictly enforcing their view of the U.S. Constitution and, according to a long new piece by the Center for Public Integrity, “its ambition is to encourage law enforcement officers to defy laws they decide themselves are illegal.” In essence, they are troubled by the overreach of the federal government in matters concerning guns, taxes and land management, and founder Richard Mack has described the federals as “the greatest threat we face today,” and his association as “the army to set our nation free.”

Blogger Justin Curmi actually begins with a fairly conservative view of the Second Amendment, saying, “There is no doubt that people do have the right to carry and have a stockpile of guns (“the right of the people to keep and bear arms”) and a state has the right to organize a well-regulated Militia.” But, despite having the right to have arms, he goes on to say they shouldn’t have the right to use them in self-defense.
“The main problem with the notion of self-defense is it imposes on justice, for everyone has the right for a fair trial,” he argues. “Therefore, using a firearm to defend oneself is not legal because if the attacker is killed, he or she is devoid of his or her rights.” |

The state Senate has passed an expansion of Missouri’s laws regarding self-defense with a firearm, to allow deadly force to be used without retreating by a person who thinks a reasonable threat exists. The “stand your ground” provision was sponsored by Senator Kurt Schaefer (R-Columbia). It would expand Missouri’s “castle doctrine,” which allows a person to use deadly force to defend themselves at home or on their property. |

On Feb. 13, Second Amendment advocates and other patriotic Americans were shocked with news of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s sudden death at the Cibolo Creek Ranch in West Texas. An avid sportsman, the 79-year-old had spent the previous day on a quail hunt. His body was found the next morning in his room, his death attributed to natural causes. Justice Scalia’s passing puts the Second Amendment at a crossroads. As I will explain below, his replacement will either reinforce the Supreme Court’s recognition of the individual right to keep and bear arms … or contribute to its ultimate destruction. |

On April 23, at around 1 a.m., Boyd attempted to break into a Corinth home at 1500 Proper Street. At home were two residents who were roused by Boyd's attempts and warned him, according to Corinth Police Chief Ralph Dance, by shouting, "Don't come in here. I have a gun!"
Boyd did not heed the home owner's warning, and while concealing his face with a bandanna, entered the home through a broken door which he forced open. The exact details of what happened next are not known other than "a scuffle ensued", according to Dance. During said scuffle, Boyd was shot three times. None of the shots were immediately fatal. |

The White House hopes new technology can finally launch smart gun technology — childproof weaponry aimed at stopping accidental shootings and increase gun safety.
The administration is for the first time, trying to put in place the requirements needed so law enforcement could eventually use smart guns. It's using finding in a new report from Defense, Homeland Security and the Justice Departments, agencies that were directed in January to look into the matter as Obama advocated gun reforms.
So-called "smart guns" utilize fingerprints or wireless signals to ensure they can only be used by their owners. |

The range required that I pass a background check and attend a short safety lesson before I could handle a .22 caliber rifle. The laws in NYC restrict citizens from even renting a handgun without a license—a disappointment for my fantasy, which had me in red lipstick and leather pants, my legs hip-width apart as I fired bullets out of a silver pistol and into the heart of a shadowy male figure.
Instead, I wore jeans and a sweater and recruited my husband to tag along.
“But you hate guns,” he said. |

On Monday, Senate Bill 1257 was amended and passed by the House Committee of the Whole and today it was passed by the full House of Representatives.
SB 1257 will now go back to the Senate for final concurrence. However, Senate Bill 1266 is still awaiting third read by the full House of Representatives. Additionally, House Bill 2338, House Bill 2446 and House Bill 2524 are all awaiting third read in the Senate. Third reading of non-budgetary bills will likely continue after the Legislature finalizes the budget. |

Are guns used by bad people to kill good people? Yes, of course (and so are fists, blunt instruments, knives, etc.). Do the guns of law-abiding American citizens sometimes fall into the wrong hands and kill good people? Yes, sadly there are evil people in this country, and that is a terrible thing. But, the illusion of an “epidemic” of gun crime is created by using inflated statistics, that include suicides, accidental deaths and justifiable (self-defense) homicide, including police-related incidents. |

Organized by BixPros, “The Evolution of Shooting” was the first multi-disciplinary weapons course I’ve ever attended. The students attended three separate classes every day of the event, each helmed by a master of specific discipline. By the end of the course, every student had the ability to engage threats from contact distance to 200 yards. |

As was previously discussed in the Missouri Supreme Court blog post, PLCAA has language that must be reviewed and interpreted by the court. Specifically, in the Remington case, the PLCAA language at issue was the phrase a lawsuit “may not be brought” against gun makers. Judge Bellis held: “Although the phrase “may not be brought” suggests absence of jurisdiction, the phrase is not equivalent to a clear statement of congress’s intent to limit the power of the courts rather than the rights of litigants. . . . In the absence of such a clear statement, we must treat the PLCAA as speaking only to the rights and obligations of the litigants, not to the power of the court”. |

The House State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee held a hearing on multiple pro-gun bills last night, including Senate Bill 113.
SB 113 sought to repeal the arbitrary and misguided ban on firearm magazines capable of holding more than 15 rounds of ammunition. With testimony carrying the hearing into the early morning hours, the House Committee voted to indefinitely postpone SB 113 on a party-line vote. 2016 now goes down in the books as another year that anti-gun lawmakers decided to push their own political agenda instead of protecting the right to self-defense of their constituents.

People who have pride in Utah, as well as pride in the Second Amendment, were offered a way to show off that pride by purchasing a special gun. But the call came to Get Gephardt from a number of frustrated Utah gun owners who say they did not get what they paid for and the investigation into those claims leads all the way to Utah's Capitol Hill.
For several years, lawmakers have been given the opportunity to buy a special weapon -- a Utah Commemorative Gun. Last year, the people who run the program decided to open it up to the public. For $750, you could buy a limited edition AR-15 assault rifle. |

Amy Schumer dedicated the opening of tonight’s episode of Inside Amy Schumer, “Welcome to the Gun Show,” to flaunting her ignorance of United States gun laws. The episode depicts a home shopping network-type show that rebrands itself as a “gun show” to sell handguns at $39.95 each.
For starters, this transaction would be thoroughly illegal. Despite the claims of anti-gun outlets, entering a gun show doesn’t wipe away all gun laws—transactions remain subject to the same legal requirements they would face outside the gun show. Likewise, selling a firearm online doesn’t magically eliminate background check requirements, and it’s still a crime for felons to purchase firearms, regardless of the venue or delivery method. |

A bill to help protect victims of domestic violence passed in Connecticut's House of Representatives on Wednesday.
By a 104-42 vote, the House sent House Bill 5054 on to the Senate for consideration. That bill would require those subject to temporary restraining orders to turn over their firearms to police or a federally licensed dealer.
According to Karen Jarmoc, president and chief executive of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, access to firearms in a domestic-violence situation increases the likelihood of homicide by 500 percent. |
