A rural Josephine County property owner will not be charged in the fatal shooting of a Grants Pass man who reportedly exchanged gunfire with the property owner.

Preston James Sweaney, 29, of Grants Pass, was found dead in a vehicle Thursday after being shot in the 2700 block of Speaker Road near Wolf Creek, according to a press release issued Friday by Oregon State Police.

About 9:00 pm a Gwinnett County, Georgia man was in his bedroom when he heard someone banging loudly on his back door. The resident told police that he grabbed his gun and fired two or three shots through the door. He then opened the door to find a man screaming with a gunshot wound in his leg.

At this point, the resident closed and locked the door and then called 911. The burglary suspect was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary, along with a number of other openly anti-gun legislators, sent a letter to Governor Larry Hogan asking him to reverse his earlier decision acknowledging gun stores as critical businesses during this COVID-19 crisis. They find it “disturbing” that numerous Marylanders are choosing to exercise their right to self-defense for the first time and want Gov. Hogan to shut off access to this constitutional right by closing gun stores.

Gov. Hogan’s office says that he will continue to follow federal guidelines designating gun stores as essential businesses that should remain open during this time of uncertainty.

It’s back to the circuit court with an Illinois Supreme Court case challenging the constitutionality of the state’s Firearm Owners Identification card.

In 2017, Vivian Brown, an elderly resident of White County, was charged with violating the FOID card law when she had a rifle in her home without possessing a FOID card. Her attorneys said that violates the Second Amendment, arguing “the second amendment to the United States Constitution protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms for the purpose of self-defense and that this right is at its ‘most acute’ in the home.”

These days, the answering machine is getting a lot of work at Greta's Guns in Simi Valley, California: "Due to high call volume, we cannot answer the phones at this time. We'll be open during normal business hours until further notice," as the machine informs customers. "The best way to reach us is via email or Facebook messenger." Conveniently, the gun shop is located just around the corner from a Walmart and a church.

Two billionaire-backed gun prohibition lobbying groups—Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety and the Seattle-based Alliance for Gun Responsibility—have launched an all-out effort to convince state officials across the country to close gun shops during the COVID-19 pandemic panic.

Everytown has even turned loose its legal staff to write a four-page memorandum titled “The Constitutionality of Including Gun Stores in Business Closure Orders,” for circulation to public officials.

The Second Amendment Foundation responded to a memorandum issued by ‘Everytown Law,’ an arm of Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety gun prohibition lobbying group, calling the document “totally biased” and written solely to support the emergency closure of American gun stores, using the COVID-19 crisis as an excuse.

A group of local residents, gun stores and gun rights organizations including the NRA have filed a federal lawsuit against four Bay Area counties for mandating that gun stores close as "non-essential businesses" during the region's coronavirus outbreak.

The lawsuit, filed with the U.S. District Court for Northern California Tuesday, alleges that local officials from Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties violated the United State Constitution's Second and Fourteenth Amendments by ordering that gun stores be closed.

Gun shops are an “essential business” during a pandemic, just like your neighborhood grocery store, according to a new lawsuit filed by the NRA that argues a pandemic can’t overturn the 2nd Amendment.

On March 20 Gov. Cuomo issued an order shuttering all retail businesses not deemed essential, including gun stores, to prevent spread of coronavirus.

“As a result of the government’s overreach, most New Yorkers have no legal way to exercise the constitutional right to purchase arms or ammunition,” the NRA argues in the federal lawsuit filed Thursday in the Northern District of New York.

Wolf has largely remained mum about his motives, but some observers saw the reversal as an attempt at sidestepping an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. “I think Governor Wolf recognized there was a chance the Supreme Court would rule against him,” Josh Blackman, a constitutional law professor at South Texas College in Houston who blogged about the case, said in an email. “He perhaps was unwilling to set a precedent that can weaken gun control laws.” Wolf’s office did not respond to requests for comment.

In California, they waited in lines that stretched around the block. In Wisconsin, they created a scene that store owners could only describe as “crazy,” prolonging waits for background checks. In Washington, D.C., they so overwhelmed the city’s only federally licensed gun dealer that he simply closed up shop.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Governor Brian Kemp issued Executive Order 04.02.20.01 requiring individuals to “shelter-in-place” at home except for essential tasks, effective today at 6PM. In addition to referencing federal guidelines designating gun stores as “Critical Infrastructure,” the order clearly states:

“That nothing in the Order shall be construed to suspend or limit the sale, dispensing, or transportation of firearms or ammunition, or any component thereof.”

On 2 April, 2020, a three-judge panel from the Ninth Circuit heard oral arguments in the Duncan v. Becerra case. The District Court had decided the outright ban of magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds violated the Second Amendment. The opinion, by Judge Roger T. Benitez, was brilliant and extremely well written.

The video lasts over an hour, with strong questioning by the judges. Judge Consuelo Callahan presides and does most of the questioning. Judge Kenneth K. Lee asks some pointed questions, and Judge Barbara M. Lynn asks a few questions.

Many aspects of firearms—from how they perform to what happens when they are employed in self-defense to when they sell well—are counter-intuitive. In other words, what actually happens is contrary to what a reasonable person would expect due to unforeseen factors. This being the case, I thought I’d irregularly touch on some of these aspects of guns and the business of shooting. Some are small matter; others have considerable import. In any event, do really have anything better to do right now?

While St. Clair County Sheriff Department numbers do not indicate an abnormal increase in individual gun sales, one pawnshop owner said he is seeing an increase in first-time gun buyers in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the first three months of 2019, the St. Clair County Sheriff Department recorded 1,714 individual guns purchased in St. Clair County, compared to 1,630 guns in the first three months of 2020. The sheriff department's numbers do not reflect sales reported to city police departments outside the sheriff's jurisdiction.
