Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was larger than life. Turns out he's pretty influential in death as well. The court's struggles to carry on with eight members since Scalia died Feb. 13 are well documented. The justices have deadlocked, 4-4, on three occasions so far. They have granted fewer cases than normal to hear next term. Oral arguments are devoid of Scalia's tough questions and incisive wit.

The never-ending debate on guns is often polarized by simple-minded perceptions that reduce arguments to two camps: Gun-control types who “want to take your guns away,” and gun zealots who want a gun in every pot, pocket and pew. The reality is not so stark, and local gun shop owners in Flagler County are first to show why. With the discussion of gun control and gun rights provoking more discussions than foreign affairs this election season, FlaglerLive spoke to three store owners who hold different views on many aspects of the debate, though one thing they all agree on is that the gun sales business in Florida is doing very well.

PBS announced that ARMED IN AMERICA, a special two-night television event exploring gun violence in America, is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, May 9-10, 2016. ARMED IN AMERICA centers around two acclaimed documentaries presented by INDEPENDENT LENS: “Peace Officer,” about a former sheriff who, after establishing and training one of Utah’s first SWAT team, raises questions about the dangers of what he sees as the increased militarization of police when that same unit kills his son-in-law 30 years later, and “The Armor of Light,” which profiles the faith journeys of two Christians as they fight gun violence: the mother of a teenage shooting victim and an evangelical minister who questions whether one can be both pro-gun and pro-life.

In January the social media giant announced it was banning the sale of guns and ammunition on the site. The move was the culmination of months of behind-the-scenes lobbying from gun violence prevention advocates coupled with internal recognition at Facebook that the site is becoming a major e-commerce marketplace. But the ban isn’t working. Sales continue to flood gun enthusiast groups around the country. While some have left the site altogether and set up shop elsewhere, many have taken their sales underground via Facebook’s “secret” group settings, which make it impossible for non-members to access the pages.

Mayor Steve Noble has yet to take a firm stand on a proposal to amend a 1978 law that prohibits the discharge of firearms in the city. Opponents of an indoor shooting range proposed for a Prince Street building in Midtown say the law means the business cannot be allowed. Supporters of the shooting range say the law was not intended to prevent indoor shooting ranges, and they are seeking to have the law amended. The law bars all discharge of firearms within the city of Kingston except by law enforcement or in cases of self-defense. An amendment proposed by Alderwoman Debbie Brown, R-Ward 9, would allow weapons to be discharged in indoor facilities designed and constructed as a shooting range.

The report shows that “in the Bay Area alone, six local law enforcement agencies can’t account for at least 379 firearms since 2010 because of loss or theft. The weapons unaccounted for include military grade assault rifles such as AR-15s and M16s, sniper rifles, shotguns, a gas grenade launcher and hundreds of handguns.”

New Jersey senators voted Monday to block new rules proposed by Gov. Chris Christie to make it easier for state residents to obtain concealed firearms permits. The Senate voted 22-17 to approve a resolution declaring the proposed rule — which would expand the standard for obtaining the gun permit — as inconsistent with legislative intent. If the Assembly follows suit, it would require the superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, which proposed the change, to either amend or withdraw the rule. If the agency fails to do so, the Legislature could vote on a second resolution to invalidate the rule change.

In response, many shocked viewers wanted to learn who was responsible for this arrangement. The memorandum of understanding (MOA) between the ATF and Glendale Police was approved unanimously by the Glendale City Council via resolution last November. The memo calls for the police department to assist the ATF in exchange for….well, almost nothing. The agreement expires in 2020. The memo is signed by the head ATF agent for the Phoenix Field Division along with Glendale Police Chief Debora Black.

He then directly contacted the University’s police about whether his piece would be allowed; the police forwarded his inquiry to school administrators. Georgia's highest court ruled Monday that a lawsuit filed by a gun rights group over access to the Atlanta Botanical Garden should continue after a local judge wrongly dismissed it. The Supreme Court's ruling doesn't affect operations at the garden. But it sends the suit filed by the gun rights group GeorgiaCarry.org and a member of the organization back to Fulton County Superior Court. The dispute stems from an October 2014 visit to the garden by Philip Evans, a Georgia Carry member, with a state firearms license. Court documents say Evans wore a handgun on a waistband holster during a visit to the garden with no issues. Evans has a state-issued license, according to court documents.
