MI: Defending yourself: Shoot or don't shoot training

Owning a gun doesn’t mean you’re trained to use it in all situations.

As WXYZ kicks off our week-long series ‘defending yourself,' 7 Action News Reporter Ann Marie LaFlamme shows us a new training simulation teaching gun skills under pressure.

“Students were done with the class, they get their certificate and they would walk away and they would just have to believe it was true,” he said.

He created ‘Shoot Don’t Shoot,’ a home like training scenario at Community Bible Church, using paintball guns, an armed bad guy and real life at home ambush scenarios.

“If you’re gonna have a gun, it’s a huge responsibility- take the time and train,” Albright said.

One should expect students will learn sometime during their school years that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and Section 22, Article I of our state’s Constitution were put there to allow citizens to protect themselves from a tyrannical government and to avoid the need for a large standing army. I suspect that with today’s emphasis on training rather than educating students this is expecting too much.

A few hundred gun rights activists brought their message to what has become an annual event at the state Capitol, urging lawmakers on Tuesday to protect their right to keep and own firearms and to widen legal protections.

The crowd at the Second Amendment Action Day reacted strongly to warnings about threats to gun rights, as speakers peppered their remarks with references to northeastern states, President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Nevada senators favorably reviewed a Republican-backed bill barring schools from punishing students for playing with toy guns.

Members of the Senate Education Committee held a hearing Tuesday on AB121, which already passed the Assembly on a 24-17 party-line vote.

Republican Assemblyman Jim Wheeler is sponsoring the so-called Pop-Tarts measure, which would forbid elementary and middle schools from punishing students who play with toy guns or pretend to use a firearm.

In the case of Peruta v. the County of San Diego, a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the County of San Diego and invalidated the County’s severe restriction on carrying a weapon that made it next to impossible for a private citizen carry a firearm — a severe restriction on Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms.

...

On March 26, 2015, the Ninth Circuit ordered an en banc hearing.

That hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. in Courtroom One, James R. Browning U.S. Courthouse in San Francisco.

An investigation continues today into allegations that an anti-gun Michigan state senator fired several shots into a Mercedez-Benz belonging to an ex-wife over the weekend in a bizarre case that today has the Detroit Free Press calling on the senator to “take a time out.”

Seriously? That’s an elementary school remedy for what could amount to a felony involving a firearm. If charged and found guilty, State Sen. Virgil K. Smith, whose history was discussed here by BearingArms.com, which quoted blogger Rob Hoey at "Brain Flushings," could be timed out for up to four years in the pen.

One year ago, Oklahoma legislators completed their first override of a veto from Gov. Mary Fallin. They were able to negate her decision on a bill involving firearms.

Advocates for gun rights are hoping history will repeat itself.

They are encouraging lawmakers to override a veto Fallin delivered Monday on Senate Bill 41, which sought to restrict businesses from banning guns at parks, fairgrounds and recreational areas. Any senator can request an override vote.

The number of Americans with concealed-carry licenses continues to skyrocket, with current estimates somewhere around 12 million Americans exercising their right to carry. I continue to see more stories about women and concealed carry, including a piece from public radio in Michigan that noted the doubling of applications from females over the past five years.

Heyward had no time to respond. He never raised his weapon or threatened the officers, according to their own incident reports. He was shot before the officer completed his second sentence.

It all happened in 1.1 seconds, according to the Charleston Post and Courier.

It was back in the mid 1980s when law enforcement agencies and civilians alike began switching out their double-action revolvers chambered in .38 Spl. and .357 Mag. for semi-automatic pistols with magazine capacities of 15 rounds or more. However, nearly 30 years after the great semi-auto migration began, many gun owners have found themselves living in states with anti-gun lawmakers who are working diligently to restrict, and in some cases ban, semi-automatic pistols and their full-capacity magazines.

Gun Test: Mossberg Maverick HS12

That’s precisely the argument Mossberg brings to the table with the Maverick HS12, a 12-gauge hunting gun turned home defender. Why would a manufacturer with proven pump-action and semi-auto platforms, specifically tailored to defensive purposes, bring out an over-under for the same application? There are several good answers to that question, but the main reason is simplicity. Not every homeowner has the time—or even the motivation—to become intimately familiar with the shotgun he or she has selected to protect the castle and its contents.

A Taser and a stun gun are two different things. A Taser can be fired from 15 feet away and causes the targets muscles to stop working. Stun guns are illegal in Michigan and on top of that...

“You have to make contact with the other person," said Dave Kent, former police officer. "Wherever you make contact, that’s where the 50,000 volts go. So if I do this in the shoulder, I probably couldn’t use this shoulder, but this shoulder I can still hit you with.”

There are few public servants we respect more than law enforcement officers.

As honest Americans and Alabamians, we have reason to take note of our appreciation to the men and women who patrol our cities, counties and state. Most of us can point to at least one specific instance when an officer responded in a time of need.

It’s too bad we don’t think of such moments when we elect politicians who create laws that make their jobs harder and more dangerous.

Hastings and Hernandez were two of the women who spoke in favor of legislation that would ban anyone convicted of domestic assault and anyone subject to a restraining order from possessing or buying a gun for the duration. The women were part of a rally at the State House on Tuesday led by Rhode Island Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety.

Also speaking in favor of the legislation Tuesday was Anthony Silva, a former Cumberland police chief and the current chief of staff to Lieutenant Governor Daniel McKee. Silva said the legislation has both McKee's endorsement and his own personal endorsement stemming from more than 30 years of police experience.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"Let us contemplate our forefathers, and posterity, and resolve to maintain the rights bequeathed to us from the former, for the sake of the latter. The necessity of the times, more than ever, calls for our utmost circumspection, deliberation, fortitude, and perseverance. Let us remember that `if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom.' It is a very serious consideration...that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event." --Samuel Adams, speech in Boston, 1771
