In a recent interview with the Washington Post, retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, whose memoir is being released tomorrow, shows why the conflict over the kind of judge a president appoints is so important. President Richard Nixon appointed Stevens, who turned 99 last month, to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1970 and, five years later, President Gerald Ford appointed him to the Supreme Court. The Senate confirmed him to both judicial positions without any opposition. Stevens is the third longest serving member of the Supreme Court in American history.

Ottawa County deputies continued to search for stolen guns in Coopersville Monday morning. At 3:40 a.m., an alarm went off at Palladium Gun Shop on Eastmanville Street. When deputies got there, they found that a group of people broke into the store and took off with several guns.

Emergency crews were called to a report of a man shot in Des Moines Monday afternoon. It happened around 12:20 p.m. in the 1400 block of Dean Avenue. According to police, the victim is an ex-boyfriend who was in the home. A woman there shot him in the chest. She then called 911.

A petition to recall state Rep. Tom Sullivan, the Arapahoe County Democrat whose son was killed in the Aurora theater shootings, was approved Monday by the Secretary of State's Office. Sullivan was a main sponsor of the "red flag" gun bill approved in this year's legislative session. The new law lets a judge consider evidence that a gun owner poses a danger to himself and others. If so, those guns can be seized temporarily while the owner gets help.

Support for strict gun control measures proposed by fellow Democrats is almost non-existent, the leader of Delawares Senate said Monday in declaring that the measures will not be coming out of a committee he leads. Adam Armenta of Verona told his son Riley, 11, hed likely spend the rest of his life trying to top the large turkey he shot during a Learn-to-Hunt session before the regular season opened in mid-April. Riley, a fifth-grader at Sugar Creek in Verona, was being mentored by Ron Drone, while Adam Armenta, also a novice turkey hunter, was mentored by Bill Compty. Adam Armenta was happy for his son so much so he didnt mind going home with memories but not a prize.
