A local comic book fixture was killed Friday as he tried to stop a robbery. Now police need the public's help to track down the villain. One of the most tragic parts of this story is the question of whether more could have been done to save Cavanaugh's life.

The Blind Tiger, a neighboring business, wrote in a Facebook post that they called 911 and were left on hold for 17 minutes trying to get through to the dispatcher.

Submitters note: Call 911 and order a pizza. See which one gets there first.

Legislation that would allow gun owners without a concealed pistol license to carry concealed firearms drew a crowd at a Tuesday House Judiciary Committee meeting.

The four-bill package is sponsored by Republican Reps. Michele Hoitenga, Pamela Hornberger, Sue Allor and Triston Cole. The most controversial of the four, HB 4416, would lift the prohibition on concealed carry without a license for all but those who are already prohibited from carrying a firearm by state or federal law.

During testimony, Hoitenga, R-Manton, said the legislation does not eliminate background checks or gun free zones currently codified under state law. Gun owners without a concealed pistol license would also not have reciprocity with most other states.

“Why didn’t you run away?” It was this dreaded question, asked of victims of violent crime who chose to defend themselves and kill their attackers rather than turn tail and run to uncertain safety, that “stand your ground” laws were intended to address. We shouldn’t demand that ordinary people be Jason Bourne, constantly aware of the availability and potential risk of any exits to the rooms they’re in, even while under pressure, in order to claim self-defense. That’s why North Carolina passed its own “stand your ground” law in 2011: to prevent someone like Gyrell Lee, who defended himself and his cousin in good-faith reliance on his right to repel force with force, from being treated like a common criminal.

The family of Ryan Modell is frustrated that more wasn't done to figure out what happened in his shooting death. They say they don't understand why a grand jury wasn't the one to make the decision if the killing was murder or justified.

Doug Stearns says he would have done exactly what his neighbor and friend Coty McDonnell did the night of October 23 — that is, pull an assault rifle on some suspicious-looking teenagers parked outside his house, jump in his truck and chase them to the end of the block, and then hold them at gunpoint until police arrived. Stearns gathered on the front steps of the Bexar County courthouse Monday evening with a small group of supporters and gun rights activists who say the criminal charges filed against McDonnell over the incident present a threat to their Second Amendment rights. McDonnell's trial for deadly conduct, a misdemeanor charge, is scheduled to start on Tuesday.

Sponsors of the bill claim most guns that are purchased illegally come from small dealerships. In an effort to curb violence in Chicago, some Illinois lawmakers want to pass stronger regulations on gun shop owners to keep firearms from getting into the wrong hands.

By 1904, a 39-year-old John Browning had designed no less than a great single-shot rifle, the Model 1885 Winchester, three lever-action rifles, the Models 1892, 1894 and 1895, a pump-action shotgun, the Model 1893, and several semi-automatic rifles and pistols—too numerous to list here. There’s a story floating around that Browning wanted a small pistol that could fit in his vest pocket as he tarried about his farm outside Ogden, Utah. Concurrently, he wanted to come up with the smallest center-fire cartridge that would use the small pistol primer and replicated the power of the ubiquitous .22 LR.
