A relatively new club in Charlevoix is taking aim at teaching people of all ages the shooting sports.

The club — the Charlevoix Lake Monsters — is relatively new to the area and is a competitive youth shooting team for students from elementary school through college. It operates under the banner of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation.

“This is really open to anyone that is in school and wants to learn about guns, gun safety and shooting,” said club head coach Matt Hall.

“If you are 40 years old and in college you can still be a part of this club,” he added.

Hall previously helped run a separate club in Tennessee for six years before bringing his passions for shooting sports north to Michigan.

This Sunday, Legally Armed In Detroit – a gun rights advocacy group – is holding free firearm training for women at Top Gun Shooting Sports in Taylor.

Since the event is free, there will be no charge for the use of the firearm, ammunition or time at the range. There are four separate time slots women can sign up for to participate. To register, visit the Facebook event page.

The lesson includes a safety briefing, loading ammunition and shooting.

No prior firearms training or experience is required. Women experienced with firearms also can attend to improve marksmanship skills.

Last year, the goal was to invite 800 women to the event. This year, instructor Rick Ector, hopes 900 women attend.

You are a mighty picky handgunner if you can't find a subcompact 9 mm or .380 ACP to suit your needs and preferences. Still, I have to wonder if we aren't missing something in our rush to embrace all this new technology in subcompact semi-automatic manufacturing. Most of the new guns are admittedly made with polymer frames, and there's nothing wrong with polymer frames, as Glock has so strongly established. What gives me pause is the tendency to rule out the great little concealed-carry revolver as a dependable personal-defense handgun.

As early as next week, the Connecticut state Senate may hold votes on a broad-based set of gun control legislation. The state House of Representatives previously passed these to require firearms be made unavailable for self-defense, effectively end the centuries old practice of home-manufacturing firearms for personal use, and impose unnecessary restrictions on transporting handguns. Please contact your state Senator and urge them to OPPOSE HB 7218, HB 7219, and HB 7223. Click the “Take Action” button below to contact your state Senator.

Exercising the Second Amendment right to bear arms brings great responsibility, and storing a gun properly can save a child’s life. For the one-third of American homes that have guns, that means locking them up — unloaded — and locking up all ammunition in a separate place. A new study in JAMA Pediatrics, a journal of the American Medical Association, confirms that doing those simple things could prevent nearly a third of gun deaths involving kids by accident or by suicide. Taking those practical steps would have saved thousands of children’s lives in the past decade.

Ed.: An unloaded, locked gun is less effective a tool than a rock.

The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) applauded Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday for signing NRA-backed legislation that protects tenants’ rights by prohibiting “no firearms” clauses in residential leases.

“The Supreme Court was clear in 2008 when it ruled the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to have firearms in their homes for self-defense,” said Tara Mica, Texas state director, NRA-ILA. “House Bill 302 is an important piece of legislation that ensures Texans’ fundamental rights are protected no matter where they live.”

Local legislation aimed at affirming that Alabama’s “Stand Your Ground” law does apply to churches passed the state House of Representatives on May 17 and is headed to the state Senate.

Rep. April Weaver sponsored the bill for Chilton County after action was not taken on the proposed “Alabama Church Protection Act,” which would have been for the entire state.

Weaver said the local bill would “remove any doubt that ‘stand your ground’ applies to churches and religious organizations.”

Good Triggers: A Must-Have for Self-Defense Guns

I was recently working with a class of new shooters. It was pleasing to see that the vast majority of them had gone to the trouble of acquiring decent pistols that were really suitable for personal defense. However, I noticed that several in the class were obviously jerking their triggers and putting their shots low on the targets. Calling a break in the class, I checked several of these guns and found that, in every case, one of the contributing culprits was a creepy trigger that was entirely too heavy.

TX: Texas Votes to Repeal Weapons Bans, Restore 2A Rights to Access Clubs and Knucks

The Texas legislature has voted to repeal the state ban on the possession, manufacture, transportation, repair, or sale of knuckles; and the ban on the carrying of a club. These bans clearly infringed on the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Texas continues to defer to federal law on the regulation of explosive weapons, machine guns, short-barreled firearms, and firearm silencers.

They continue to ban armor-piercing ammunition, chemical dispensing devices, zip guns, and a tire deflation device, all with rather esoteric definitions in the law. Perhaps the legislature is saving the repeal of the bans on those devices for another day. From dallasnews.com:

The bill is all in the name of self-defense according to legislators.

“For me, the Second Amendment is really about the right to exist and I think that everyone has the right to defend themselves,” Stickland said. That's why Stickland co-authored House Bill 446 to overturn the ban on brass knuckles, self-defense keychains and clubs.

Currently, possession of those items is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $4,000 and a year in jail. “We've got these kind of archaic laws that were addressing a problem maybe decades ago and people are falling into a trap of not knowing they're breaking a law,” said Stickland.

Retired Justice Stevens Continues Crusade Against Guns

Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens does not believe a law-abiding citizen has a right to possess firearms under the Second Amendment, and he wants to make sure everyone knows it. He made his position clear when he authored a dissenting opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller, where the Supreme Court, in fact, held that the Second Amendment does protect an individual right.

Last year he shifted gears, slightly, when he called for a repeal of the Second Amendment in order to facilitate the passage of restrictions on the lawful possession of firearms.

A year after a high school mass shooting near Houston that remains one of the deadliest in U.S. history, Texas lawmakers are poised to go home without passing any new gun restrictions, or even tougher firearm storage laws that Gov. Greg Abbott backed after the tragedy.

A Republican governor pushing even a small restriction on firearms kept at home in gun-friendly Texas was a landmark shift after two decades of loosening weapons regulations. And it put Texas in line with other states exploring ways to prevent not just mass shootings, but thousands of lethal gun incidents involving minors.

On May 21st, the Illinois state House of Representatives Rules Committee will hear House Amendment 1 to Senate Bill 1966 and send it to the Judiciary Committee for further consideration. HA 1 to SB 1966 would impose various gun control schemes in Illinois, such as criminalizing private transfers and increasing the cost and red tape for a FOID card. Please contact committee members and urge them to OPPOSE HA 1 to SB 1966.

The county commission voted Thursday to "declare its support of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution," the signed resolution states.

It passed in a 15-4 vote, with one absent commissioner and one abstaining from the vote.

The moment Rick Hubbard saw a Broken Arrow police car approaching Nienhuis Park on April 8, he knew it would be different.

The gut feeling turned out to be right and a month after his arrest, and pending a potential felony gun charge, Hubbard said he is not only innocent but also glad the incident has furthered discussion about open carry.

As NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox reported in March, the U.S. Supreme Court has taken up a challenge by an NRA state affiliate to a New York City gun control scheme that effectively prohibits lawfully licensed handgun owners from leaving the city with their own firearms. The plaintiffs in the case have raised a number of objections to the regime, the foremost of which is that it violates the Second Amendment. The case is New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. New York City.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Angel Cruz stirred the gun control versus gun rights pot earlier this year when he introduced a bill that would require gun owners to register their firearms every year.

They also would be required to pay a $10 registration fee annually.

The course reference list is 16 pages long. Sixteen pages of studies and related articles all focused on the issue of “gun violence.” Granted, a small number of references are used in more than one week of the six-week program but we are still looking at sixteen pages of references. The course is geared to high school and college-aged people but is open to everyone, and “The hope is to get participants up to speed on ‘relevant legal issues and effectively use data’ central to the nation's policy debate on guns.” The organizers deliberately did not invite anyone from the NRA and the gun rights movement to participate in the course, and the results are what one would expect when such a conscious decision is made.

Blazer Brass has been a go-to for many shooters seeking quality brass cased ammunition that carries an economical price point, the only problem is that they have historically offered only a 115-grain target load. Sure, that might be fine for most of your paper-punching needs but what about when you want to get closer to how your defensive load feels? That is where the new Blazer Brass 147-grain 9mm load comes in.
