State Rep. Beau LaFave recently testified before the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee. LaFave’s measure, House Bill 4331, would allow individuals to transport uncased, loaded long-barreled firearms on private land using any kind of vehicle. The same freedoms are already permitted for pistols, crossbows and slingshots.

Any person transporting a loaded long-barreled firearm under current Michigan law could be imprisoned up to 90 days and fined up to $500. LaFave’s plan would remove this violation.

“How I transport my own firearms on my own property is not the government’s business,” said LaFave of Iron Mountain, who chairs the committee. “Private property rights are in place for a reason.

Michigan gun owners could carry concealed weapons without a license, letting license-holders carry in gun-free zones and carry loaded weapons on off-road vehicles under Republican-sponsored bills pending in the state House.

With firearm legislation flying, the House Committee on Military, Veterans and Homeland Security took up two gun-related bills this week -- one to decriminalize carrying a concealed pistol with an expired license, and another to allow residents to carry loaded rifles on their own property, including on off-road vehicles.

The bills aren’t formally linked, but fall into a general grouping from Republicans looking to expand gun rights and peel back regulations.

By now you’ve surely seen the video of an armored vehicle running over protesters in Venezuela. It was a display that was shockingly reminiscent of Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Self-defense instructor Ben Branam joins the Self Defense Gun Stories Podcast to look at four new examples. Were these gun owners lucky, or did they have a plan and training? What can we learn from their experience?

Any change to gun laws in America typically elicits furious reactions for or against the move but when the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives ban on bump stocks went into effect last month, even the NRA didn’t put up much of a fight.

“This is a regulation issued by the Trump administration. This is completely different than a piece of legislation passed by Congress or a Supreme Court case,” said Justin Hansford.

Bump stocks allow semi-automatic rifles to essentially function like fully-automatics.

The debate over firearm rights and restrictions always seems to revolve (pardon the pun) around the words “common sense” when there is nothing common or sensible about some of the suggestions made.

For instance: One doctor, having seen his fair — or unfair — share of bullet wounds in an emergency department, bemoans the idea that we cannot write laws to “keep firearms out of the hands of those that will do harm.” Pray tell me, how are we to forecast the future?

As of this writing, 2450 California Concealed Weapon Permits have been issued in San Diego County. In February 2018, there were only 1,300. That doesn’t mean it is easy to get a CCW issued from the San Diego County Sheriff. But it may not be as hard as you think.

California is a one of the nine remaining states or territories that have a “May Issue” concealed carry permit law. Being a May Issue state, the decision on whether or not to issue you a concealed carry permit is up to the governing authority, in this case, the San Diego County Sheriff.

In Cruikshank, the Supreme Court found “The right to bear arms is not granted by the Constitution; neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence. The Second Amendment means no more than that it shall not be infringed by Congress, and has no other effect than to restrict the powers of the National Government.” According to this case, the Second Amendment did not guarantee an individual the right to bear arms.

The AMA published a study of the effects of “Mass Shootings” on gun sales. The authors found gun sales were about as likely to decrease as to increase after the events.

Instead of the traditional FBI definition of a mass murder as killing four or more people in a single incident, not including themselves, the study published by the AMA uses the more wide ranging “Mass Shooting”, which they define as an incident in which 5 or more people are injured or killed. Not surprisingly, this increased the number of incidents substantially. The researchers found 124 incidents from November 1998 to April, 2016. That is the period the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) has been in effect.

Myisha McGahee-Wooten is a devout Muslim who dresses in full hijab, along with an opaque face veil covering everything but her eyes.

But strapped to her tiny waist is something decidedly less holy — a Glock 19.

Islamophobia is real. That, though, is only part of the reason McGahee-Wooten carries. After being robbed at gunpoint back in 2015, she finds that carrying a firearm makes her feel safer.
