Sometime in 2009, the number of guns in the United States for the first time exceeded the country’s population. The gap has been widening ever since. In early April, the FBI reported that it had run background checks for nearly 7.7 million Americans wanting to purchase a firearm in the first quarter of 2016. In all of 2015, the FBI ran a record total of more than 23 million background checks. A single background check can cover multiple purchases, so the number is at best a rough indicator of gun sales.

Brad Witt, D-Clatskanie; Greg Barreto, R-Cove; and Sal Esquivel, R-Medford, misled colleagues who later approved a controversial wolf bill.

In 4 Favorite Forgotten Handgun Cartridges, I talked about a few of the more obscure calibers that I enjoy working with. Shortly after posting, reader responses reminded me that another terrific revolver cartridge had been forgotten once again, namely, the .41 Remington Magnum. Although I’ve read about the .41 Mag. over the years, I had yet to fire it

The National Rifle Association and its supporters base their support of open gun laws on our Second Amendment.
Judge Antonin Scalia, whose opinion changed the court’s interpretation of the Second Amendment and dictated a much-looser reading of the amendment, based his opinion on his evaluation of the minds of the writers of the Constitution when the amendment was written. This was in accordance with his own historical interpretation — which ignored prior case law and allowed an experienced debater like Scalia to justify his decision regardless of past legal precedent

Phenix City Council voted to delete its first reading of the discharge firearms ordinance during Tuesday's council meeting, as Mayor Eddie Lowe says the city needs more time for due diligence. “We are not taking away people’s Second Amendment right to bear arms, I know that’s been put out there that’s totally not true," Mayor Lowe said. "We are not trying to hurt people who hunt, that is totally not true and we are not being pressured to look at this ordinances."

The first time, they got just a single handgun. This time, they got 30 handguns, two rifles and a sniper rifle. What will happen to these guns? They'll show up on the black market and likely will be used in a crime.

The Obama administration released a multi-part plan late last week to spur further research into making reliable smart gun technology and potentially integrating it into law enforcement in the future. The smart guns the report specifies are firearms that have some form of safety technology that only allows authorized people to fire the weapon. This could be a biometric fingerprint scanner on a grip that only allows the gun to fire when there's a match or a gun that can only be fired when in close proximity to a connected bracelet or ring.

There are many conflicting opinions about how close to get to a bird on the roost. Anyone who has hunted out of a treestand knows how much better you can see from that elevated position; in fact, I have been unable to see the bright fluorescent orange pack in my treestand when I am standing beside the deer I shot from the exact same stand. Translated, that means a turkey has an excellent chance of seeing you before you can ever see him.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said Tuesday he has vetoed a bill allowing concealed handguns on college campuses, rejecting the proposal that was easily approved by a legislature controlled by his own party in an election year. The bill would have allowed anyone age 21 and over to carry a concealed handgun with the proper permit on a public college or university campus. The veto decision comes weeks after Deal rejected a bill shielding opponents of gay marriage. That measure was backed by conservative groups but blasted by more than 500 Georgia companies as discriminatory.

Gabrielle Giffords joined with Minnesota legislators and members of the Minnesota Coalition for Common Sense on Tuesday to urge state officials to take more steps to address gun violence. Giffords, co-founder of the national gun violence prevention organization Americans for Responsible Solutions, and local leaders also called on the Legislature to close the loopholes in Minnesota law that allow felons, domestic abusers, and the dangerously mentally ill to buy a gun without a criminal-background check.
