The .40 S&W cartridge was developed with two specific goals in mind – to have more stopping power than the 9mm Parabellum, and better handling and manageability than the .45 ACP. With these goals in mind, a team comprised of technicians from Smith & Wesson and Winchester built the .40 S&W cartridge.
The final result from the Smith & Wesson/Winchester team was a rimless, 10x22mm round that housed a .40-inch (10mm) lead bullet weighing between 105 to 200 grain (gr). It’s considered a middleground ammunition, one that holds enough stopping power to be effective for home defense and concealed carry, and is still manageable to shoot and handle the recoil – even for those with smaller frames.

Without pointing fingers, I credit my grandpa and Joey Scarbury for sparking a healthy, life-long interest in firearms which led me down the road to becoming a collector of all things gun. The paterfamilias of my household, my grandfather was a retired 30-year military man and avid hunter who still referred to places on the map by the name "Persia" and "Indochina" not to be quaint but because that's what they went by when he was stationed there. Central in his man room was a tall oak gun case, with twin locking windowed doors, that showed off a selection of rifles and shotguns acquired over a lifetime. Polished walnut and deep charcoal bluing on ordnance steel. Smooth actions constructed by professional craftsmen to high tolerances.

The Los Angeles Times editorial board is asking Americans to urge their Senators to support gun control.
The publication is specifically focused on the two gun control bills passed by the House of Representatives in early March. One of those is the universal background check legislation, put forward by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), and the other is an expansion of the review period for extended background checks, introduced by House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC).

Last week, House Bill 3094, the open carry bill, received a favorable report from the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee and the Senate then pulled it to the floor. Now, there’s a chance to add a constitutional carry amendment to it. Please contact your state senator and ask them to SUPPORT a constitutional carry amendment to H. 3094. Constitutional carry allows a law-abiding adult to carry a handgun without first having to obtain government permission. This ensures that citizens have the right to self-defense without government red tape or delays.

Beretta’s Bobcat is one of several pocket pistols that have as their most salient feature a tilt-up barrel that springs up by actuating a lever, thus allowing the chamber to be loaded or unloaded without racking the slide. With its small gripping surface, retracting the slide when the hammer is down is difficult for some people, so a pistol that can be made ready by inserting a magazine and loading the chamber directly can be a benefit. However, the oft-mentioned selling point that this feature makes the 21A suitable for those with arthritis in their hands is blunted, given the heavy DA trigger pull that presents a similar challenge to those so afflicted. |

The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction of a man who was found guilty of arming himself with a gun while intoxicated, rejecting his arguments that his core Second Amendment rights outweighed a state law against brandishing firearms while drunk. In a 6-1 ruling, the court upheld a state appeals court decision against Mitchell Christen. He had challenged his 2018 conviction by a Dane County jury that he was intoxicated and not acting in self-defense when he armed himself with a handgun and shotgun and threatened his roommates. Christen was heard on a 911 call saying anyone who opened his door would get a “face full of lead.” |

The massive Remington factory in Ilion, New York, is stirring back to life after a fall and winter of uncertainty following last year’s bankruptcy, breakup, and sale. Word is that sometime in 2021, we’ll see Remington guns on dealer’s shelves again. While that’s encouraging, 13 years of ownership by private equity group Cerberus Capital Management tarnished the brand, as quality declined.

Missourians interested in hunting black bears in the state may apply this month for one of 400 permits offered by the Missouri Department of Conservation. The state’s first black-bear hunting season will be from Oct. 18-27; the maximum total for the season will be 40 bears. Bear hunting in Missouri is limited to Missouri residents and restricts it to three areas of southern Missouri called Bear Management Zones. Hunters must apply for a specific zone. |

Forty five people were shot, five fatally, in shootings across Chicago this weekend, police said. Another two people were killed in stabbings. In the weekend's latest fatal attack, a teenage boy was shot Sunday while driving in West Garfield Park on the West Side. The boy, 17, was shot in the face by someone on the sidewalk about 3 p.m. as he drove in the 4800 block of West Ferdinand Street, Chicago police said. |

The St. Louis couple whose armed defense of their home from protesters last summer made national news now faces a criminal trial tentatively scheduled during the first week of November, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Mark and Patricia McCloskey became reluctant celebrities of sorts last year when they were caught on video carrying guns outside their mansion after protesters allegedly broke through a gate and entered their property. |

Texas could soon become the next state to allow its citizens to carry handguns without a permit. There are nearly 20 states right now that allow that in one form or another. Jefferson County's top law enforcement officer opposes the bill. Sheriff Zena Stephens fears that permitless carry will endanger the lives of men and women who wear the badge, saying it will put guns in the hands of people not qualified to have or operate a firearm. |

Independence High Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets are hitting their marks and sweeping the team awards in the Williamson County Air Rifle League.
Throughout the year, the league hosts four matches to test the marksmanship of JROTC students. During each match, cadets fire at targets from three positions: prone, standing and kneeling. Every match has a junior varsity (JV) team winner, and a varsity team winner is chosen at the end of the season based on the performance in all four matches. |

The top two high school marksmanship programs in Europe continue to hold their own against the top JROTC competition in the United States.
Stuttgart, which has won eight straight DODEA-Europe marksmanship titles, defended its Army JROTC precision class title earlier this month in a virtual competition, edging Fountain-Fort Carson of Colorado by six points. The score also earned the Panthers quartet a No. 3 finish in the all-service rankings and a chance to compete in the Junior Olympics this summer at Camp Perry, Ohio.
Kaiserslautern, second to Stuttgart in Europe the past two seasons, retained the Air Force JROTC precision class title with a 30-point victory margin over Cherokee High School of Georgia.

From a clearing atop a ridge in northern Boone County, Chris Dunlap pointed out where he wants to build his fields of dreams.
“From that clearing there to the toe of that valley fill, we could have a 600-yard range,” Dunlap said. “Also, from that clearing to here is close to a mile. There’s room here for every discipline, from pistols to shotguns to long-range, high-powered rifles.”
Clearly, Dunlap has a vision. He’s at the initial stages of developing the Southern West Virginia Sportsman Center — a place where, as he puts it, “people will be able to shoot everything from Nerf guns to .50-calibers.”

“People stop and stare, they don’t bother me. For there’s nowhere else on earth that I would rother be, Than in Africa, with my Wotherby …” (to the tune of “On The Street Where You Live”).
My .257 Weatherby, that is. Actually, I like the .257 for hunting in most locations, but I associate it most with Africa — which is odd since many consider it on the light side for African shooting.

Concerns about looming gun control legislation and rising crime continued to fuel gun sales in America throughout the month of April, according to industry observers. The FBI conducted more than 3.5 million gun-related background checks last month, a 20% year-over-year increase from April 2020, according to the latest FBI figures released Monday. Nearly 1.7 million of those gun background checks were specifically for gun purchases, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearms industry trade group that cross references FBI data with actual sales figures provided by gun merchants to determine how many guns are sold monthly.

Americans concerned about “looming gun control legislation and rising crime” are buying more guns, according to a report from WENY News, and the state showing the most activity is Illinois.
According to Mark Oliva, public affairs director for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, “NSSF’s Adjusted National Instant Criminal Background of nearly 1.7 million background checks in April was the strongest April on record and is on pace with the background checks that we’ve seen for more than a year.”
