Milford Township could grant approval for construction of a large new firearms facility as soon as this month.

Ed Swadish, owner of Huron Valley Guns in the Village of Milford, is proposing a 37,500-square-foot training and educational facility – at a cost of $5.4 million – on an 8-acre acre parcel just north of Pontiac Trail on Milford Road ...

“I want to build a state-of-the-art facility,” Swadish said. “This is the perfect location. There’s nothing else like this around here.”

Swadish presented the concept to the Milford Township Board of Trustees, explaining the facility would consist of 25 lanes for shooting, and would be open to private individuals, but would also have six lanes dedicated to local police department training.

People plan for responding to many different emergencies, like fires, tornados, and floods.

Now, Ottawa County is adding active-shooter response training to that list.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department says, like in any emergency, how one responds could save his or her life.

To that end, the department is offering "citizen response to active shooter events" training on May 25.

The class is to provide strategies, guidance, and a "proven plan" for surviving an active-shooter event.

It's free to attend and is for people 18 and older.

The bill would allow judges to dismiss charges if they find the use of deadly force was justified. Defendants could continue to claim self-defense if the case goes to trial.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal vetoed the state’s proposed “campus carry” legislation on Tuesday.

Bill HB 859 would have allowed licensed holders to carry handguns on all public college or university campuses and buildings, except structures used for student housing or sporting events.

The Republican leader argued, “colleges have been treated as sanctuaries of learning where firearms have not been allowed. To depart from such time-honored protections should require overwhelming justification. I do not find that such justification exists.”

Undeterred by the Garden State’s failed, draconian gun laws, Senator Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-37) has quickly schemed to block Governor Chris Christie’s recent executive action.

A few weeks ago, we reported that the Attorney General issued a directive that took steps toward fixing some of the rampant abuses with New Jersey gun laws.

The executive action clarified the “justifiable need” standard for concealed carry permit issuance and the reasonable “deviation” language with regard to firearm transportation.

Taking advantage of the resignation of an Assembly lawmaker, Democrats moved in this week and gutted five of his bills, replacing language directed towards environmental issues with that taking on guns.

Asm. Henry Perea, D-Fresno, who led the moderate bloc of lawmakers in the chamber, announced last December he was resigning his seat to become a pharmaceutical lobbyist. However legislation he introduced before leaving office has been hijacked and added to the bevy of tough anti-gun proposals already working their way through the legislature.

Law enforcement is a key market for smart guns, as they are in favor of most firearm innovations. The Obama administration is eyeing law enforcement in their new report, too, and several federal law enforcement agencies are involved in the push for smart gun research and development. But law enforcement adoption often requires legislative approval, if not a legislative mandate. Add lobbyists to the mix…

In the May-June issue of Women & Guns Magazine there is an excellent article entitled “So You Want To Become a Firearms Instructor”. In particular, the article talks about instructors, and more specifically, women instructors. In the article the author, Diane Walls, interviews Mary Hayes of the Firearms Academy of Seattle (FAS).

The FAS is one of the leading shooting schools in the county, in case you are not familiar with the name. One of the recommendations she makes is that instructors take at least 100 hours of training from other instructors.

Equally stark is the response from the gun lobby. There has been growing debate about laws aimed at reducing the problem, which, as our investigation showed, has long gone underreported. Larry Pratt, a leading figure among hardline pro-gun activists, argues that tighter gun regulations are not the answer. In comments to the Times, Pratt called the hundreds of child gun deaths that occur each year "occasional mishaps":

"It's clearly a tragedy, but it's not something that's widespread," said Larry Pratt, a spokesman and former executive director of Gun Owners of America. "To base public policy on occasional mishaps would be a grave mistake."

More guns will not increase safety at Vol State, college President Jerry Faulkner said of the new law that will allow some faculty to bring firearms to school starting July 1.

Gov. Bill Haslam said Monday he is allowing the legislation to become a law without his signature, reflecting his partial disagreement with the bill. The issue is also a hot topic of discussion in other states with proponents arguing the measure improves campuses’ safety.

The controversial bill will allow full-time faculty, staff and other employees of Tennessee's public colleges and universities who have handgun-carry permits to bring their concealed guns on campus although they must notify the local law enforcement agency responsible for security.

Tyler Gottwalt is now suing the city of St. Cloud. According to the lawsuit, Gottwalt was walking in the city on November 17, 2014 with a rifle on his back. Police confronted him and ultimately he was cited for carrying his weapon in public, but Gottwalt's lawyer says the St. Cloud ordinance is in conflict with both state statute and the second amendment.

"When a state statute preempts any other statute, including ordinances, that state statute is supreme," said Attorney Kenneth Udoibok.

Gottwalt said he expected police to stop him but only to see his permit.

"I open carry my handguns," he said Thursday. "I've refrained from that with rifles now."

Making it legal to hide a gun and take it nearly everywhere on Georgia’s college campuses was a bad idea to begin with. Gov. Nathan Deal’s veto of the so-called “campus carry” bill this week comes as a relief to those who worry about the expanding list of places where gun owners can take concealed weapons.

The General Assembly essentially asked for the veto when it refused to make the bill less dangerous by keeping concealed guns out of especially sensitive places: disciplinary hearings, on-campus day care centers and administrative offices. Deal wanted those exceptions, but lawmakers of his own Republican Party said no.

Because Oklahoma is considered gun friendly, it may be surprising to learn that the Oklahoma Constitution today gives virtually no protection to the right to keep and bear arms. Since our state constitution was adopted in 1907, the courts have weakened its gun rights amendment by ruling that our right to arms is not about personal defense; that it does not protect common self-defense weapons; and that the state can make it illegal to carry a handgun in your own backyard. Shockingly, an early Oklahoma court even stated that it would not violate the state constitution to ban handguns entirely.
