In less than a month, Virginia lawmakers will converge on Richmond to take on an often-divisive issue — guns. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced a special legislative session to address gun violence June 4, less than a week after a longtime Virginia Beach public utilities employee armed with two .45 caliber handguns opened fire on his coworkers inside a municipal building, killing 12 people.

Mayor Levar Stoney wants to bar people from carrying guns in city-owned buildings and parks, catapulting Richmond into a debate on whether outlawing firearms in public spaces makes them safer. Stoney introduced an ordinance at Monday's City Council meeting to ban guns in City Hall, city-owned buildings, public parks and other community facilities. Under current state law, such a ban is not allowed and the city could not enforce Stoney's ordinance. However, the mayor said he believes that could change when state lawmakers convene for a special session on gun measures next month.

The Pocket Pistol in 2019: How Far Have We Come?

In my ideal world, there wouldn’t be any problems encountered by anyone trying to carry around a normal-size service pistol on their daily rounds. The reality of things is much different, however. Clothing styles, dress codes and the dreaded “soft NPE” (“Soft Non-Permissive Environment”) can make this impractical for many people. The latter is current internet-gun-forum jargon for a place where it’s not illegal to carry a gun, but there would be social repercussions to having one’s armed status discovered. From getting asked to leave a restaurant to possibly losing a job, these consequences are best avoided.

Anti-gun activists like to point to Great Britain as a success story after its wide-reaching ban on handguns, but a stabbing epidemic has come to plague the country in the ensuing years. A report by the Office of National Statistics, which does not include Northern Ireland or Scotland, listed 285 knife-related homicides between March 2017 and March 2018—a record number. The problem is especially pronounced among teenagers, who figure heavily as both perpetrators and victims.

The Arizona Game & Fish Commission has voted to ban hunting contests that charge fees and award prizes for killing the most of certain types of predatory and fur-bearing animals. If given final approval by the Governor’s Regulatory Review Council, the rule would go into effect Jan. 1, 2020. Commissioner Kurt Davis, who is an avid hunter, said his vote in favor of the contest ban supports the North American Wildlife Conservation Model created in the mid-1800s, which anglers and hunters supported to conserve species.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Hatred Of The Second Amendment Knows No Bounds

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo hates guns, all kinds of guns. He hates them with a passion. His vehement disdain for these inanimate objects rests on the ground that, as he perceives it, they serve no legitimate or useful purpose. Guns do kill, of course. That fact isn’t to be denied. But, there is a huge difference between guns in the hands of criminals and lunatics, on the one hand, and guns in the hands of law-abiding, trained individuals, on the other—a world of difference that antigun zealots don’t seem to recognize or appreciate; or, if they do, then it is something they simply refuse to acknowledge.

State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) was caught on camera at a recent town hall meeting suggesting the confiscation of the AR-15, a popular sporting rifle. “Maybe we won’t have a fine at all, maybe it’ll just be a confiscation and we won’t have to worry about paying the fine,” Morrison said in response to a person in attendance who was asking about SB-107, which would ban future purchases of semiautomatic firearms and require a fee and registration of currently held semiautomatic firearms. The video was captured by a member of the audience and posted to YouTube.

Several Tennessee firearm and ammunition bills will go into effect Jan. 1, 2020. One of those bills is Tennessee Senate Bill 705, which allows people to obtain their carry permit by taking an online course. Tennessee House Majority Whip Timothy Hill says he’s pleased with the firearms and ammunition bills. “The mindset of the Tennessee legislator is to be protective of our second amendment rights,” Hill said. “Expanding access where appropriate and trying their best not to limit an individual’s personal decision on what they do with their firearms.”

Yacolt has put its support behind upholding Second Amendment rights, as town council approved a resolution stating as such during its June 17 meeting. Yacolt approved the resolution following pressure from residents and a local gun rights group to make a stand against restrictions on semiautomatic rifles brought about by Initiative 1639 that was approved last year. The North County Sons and Daughters of Liberty (NCSDL) led the push for Yacolt to make a stand against the initiative, having formed recently in an attempt to get local jurisdictions to come out against the new law.

One of San Bernardino County’s easternmost cities wants to be a sanctuary, not for undocumented immigrants, for gun owners. Needles this month declared itself a “Second Amendment Sanctuary City” a message that city leaders say is partly about support for gun rights and partly a desire to get an exemption from state law so out-of-state gun owners can travel through town and for residents to purchase ammunition.

Up until now, there has been little to no national attention paid to a judge's ruling in White County, Illinois that voided the state's requirement that firearms-owners obtain a state-issued Firearms Owner's Identity Card (FOID) in order to legally own a firearm kept in the home. The case is now headed for the Illinois Supreme Court, and Second Amendment Civil Rights advocates hope the case will end up before the Supreme Court of the United States.

What's the Best Back Up Bear Gun: A Magnum Revolver or a 10mm Auto?

I’ve been hunting bears for 40-some-odd years all over North America and in Russia. I have learned a couple of truths. First, bears are tough, both in construction and attitude. They have thick hides, strong muscles, and big bones. When wounded, they rarely give up quickly. The idea of using a semi-auto handgun in a cartridge designed for self-defense against humans is ballistic folly. I know everybody thinks they are going to go John Wick on a bear and overwhelm him with a multitude of bullets, but that ignores the second bear truth: Bear attacks happen very fast. You may get one or two shots, if you are lucky, before he is chewing on your skull like an hors d’oeuvre.

Politico: Anti-Gunners Expect ‘Greatest Gains’ if Dem Beats Trump

As the huge field of Democratic presidential candidates girds for their first series of debates this week, Politico has raised a red flag for gun owners, reporting Monday, “The politics of gun control have played a role in decades of presidential elections, but advocates for the movement appear poised to make their greatest gains yet should a Democrat defeat Donald Trump in 2020.”

With every one of the nearly two-dozen Democrats now running for the nation’s highest office espousing some level of gun control as part of their campaign, the likelihood is climbing that all of their rhetoric will only drive more Second Amendment activists into the Republican camp—thus voting for Donald Trump’s second term—next year.

Maine: Legislature Adjourns Sine Die, Gun Control Measures Defeated

On June 20th, 2019, the Maine Legislature adjourned from the first session of the 129th Legislature. During this session, several egregious pieces of anti-gun legislation were defeated, including bills to criminalize private transfers of firearms and ban many commonly-owned standard capacity magazines. Thwarting efforts to threaten shooting ranges, the Legislature instead took steps to protect ranges, passing a bill that Governor Janet Mills signed into law. Unfortunately, the Legislature missed an opportunity to pass a Stand Your Ground measure, LD 533, that would have strengthened Mainers’ fundamental right to self-defense anywhere they are legally allowed to be.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A state may not impose a charge for the enjoyment of a right granted by the federal constitution... The power to impose a license tax on the exercise of these freedoms is indeed as potent as the power of censorship which this Court has repeatedly struck down... a person cannot be compelled 'to purchase, through a license fee or a license tax, the privilege freely granted by the constitution.' —MURDOCK V. PENNSYLVANIA 319 US 105 (1942)
