Several new laws will begin taking effect on Friday.

Among those passed, the Kansas House Bill 2502 allows state and municipal employees to carry concealed firearms while at work and outside of the place of business.

The previous law prohibited the concealed carrying of firearms throughout state and municipal buildings by the governing body or the buildings chief administrative officer.

The one exception to the new law is school districts are specifically exempt from the definition of a public employer.

Why the NRA Stands Up for Some Black Gun Owners, But Not Others

The NRA could have seized on Castile and Hughes’s cases to create a politically advantageous fissure between black rights’ activists and predominantly white gun violence prevention groups.

But the NRA didn’t do any of those things. Instead, after a licensed concealed carrier with no criminal record was shot dead by an apparently panicking police officer, the NRA said it would not officially comment until more facts were known. Hughes didn’t even warrant a “no comment” from the NRA, even though conservative writers in outlets like RedState eagerly took up his cause.

OK people, it's time we start listening to our moms.

I'm serious about this one. Too many people in our country are dying from gun violence. And while most people feel hopeless each and every time they hear news reports of yet another mass shooting, there is a group of dedicated moms (and dads) in Asheville seeking solutions.

I'm not going to lie. The first time the Ashevillle chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America contacted me about coming to a meeting, I really didn't want to go. I fall into the hopeless lot on this one. I'm terrified of guns and the statistics are staggeringly sad to say the least.

A small-town Indiana police department has clarified its stance on martial law in a widely shared Facebook post.

"With all the goings on in the world...The Woodburn Police Department has received requests for information about Martial Law (sic),"wrote police chief Randall W. Duhamell. "LET ME BE CLEAR....We Will NEVER take your weapons...no matter who tells us too!"

The post goes on to state that the department supports the Second Amendment and may use legal gun owners in times of emergency.

Mike Pence framed the November presidential race as crucial to defining the makeup of the Supreme Court for the next 40 years.

The GOP vice presidential nominee said voters must ensure that it’s Donald Trump picking the next high court justices.

The Indiana governor says Democrat Hillary Clinton would choose justices who would take unconstitutional actions.

He says it’s crucial to elect Trump to protect the Second Amendment, “the sanctity of life” and other liberties.

After the police murders in Dallas and Baton Rouge, La., Stephen Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, sought to add a little sanity to the situation by urging Gov. John Kasich to suspend civilians’ right to openly carry weapons during the convention.

Kasich could do nothing.

“Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional rights or state laws as suggested,” Kasich’s press secretary Emmalee Kalmbach said in a statement.

“What they think of it isn’t really my concern,” Naziri said of the police, though cops on the street didn’t seem too concerned.

My constituents aren’t against all guns. They respect Second Amendment rights. They just don’t want handguns carried around at their public pools. They don’t want machine guns in their parades. Nor does my Police Department. Nor do I.

And in fact, my city used to have reasonable restrictions in place on the possession of firearms in parks, city facilities and at City Council meetings.

Fischer, a certified wildland fire origin and cause investigator for six seasons, said the shooters were using a nine millimeter handgun to fire lead-core bullets into a paper target.

And even though they weren’t using steel-core or tracer bullets or exploding targets, one of the shots still managed to pass through the target and ignite brush in a pile of rocks about 350 feet from where they were standing.

“They technically were legal for target shooting,” Fischer said, adding it was the second fire he’s investigated this season in which restriction-friendly, lead-core ammunition started a fire.

Last month, an en banc Eleventh Circuit heard oral arguments in Wollschlaeger v. Governor of the State of Florida (popularly known as Docs v. Glocks). The case concerns whether a Florida law that prohibits doctors from asking their patients questions about gun possession unless the question is directly relevant to the patient’s care violates doctors’ free speech rights under the First Amendment. As we previously discussed here, here, and here, PLF filed a brief in support of the doctors arguing the law violates the First Amendment.

Deep in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, women were learning to shoot.

The Altair Gun Club held a firearms training course on Saturday, July 16, specifically geared to women, with no male students allowed. The Women’s Pistol 1 course is designed to allow women who possess “little or no firearms experience,” as the course’s promotional material stated, to learn the “skills, training, mindset and methodology to properly handle a firearm.”

I would like to preface this by stating at the outset that this is my opinion, after having used both types of handguns for nearly four decades.

The revolver is largely a 19th Century creation. Other than the creation of the double-action lockwork and a side-plate-less frame (thanks, Ruger), the inherent technology of the revolver pre-dates the Civil War.

Those who seek to disarm the public have always had a hidden agenda. In the middle and early 60’s the assault was more open. With each new assault the public grew more educated and the fallacies of the anti-Second Amendment arguments were exposed. As public support waned, those who hate an empowered public, have grown more desparate and more disingenuous.

Are Floridians so in love with the Second Amendment that we're willing to abuse the First Amendment?

"It's a real, real concern,' said Pamela Goodman, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida.

The specific problem in this case has to do with a law passed by the Florida Legislature in 2011. Cities and counties were already forbidden from passing local gun regulations, but the state upped the ante with language that left elected officials susceptible to fines, lawsuits and removal from office for messing with gun laws.

It’s almost impossible to have a level-headed conversation about guns in America these days, which is a shame because gun violence has spiraled out of control and all of us are paying a heavy price for it in some shape or fashion. If cooler heads prevailed, Americans could take steps to reduce gun violence while still protecting the rights guaranteed by our Second Amendment, but that would require people across our political spectrum to recognize the validity and concerns of those with opposing viewpoints.

The Bill of Rights: Speech and Guns in the Private Workplace

In fact, the boss of a private company can force an employee to leave guns at home even if he or she has raised concerns about workplace safety.

The case of Jeremy Hoven, a Walgreens pharmacist who shot at robbers with his private gun during a 2011 holdup, highlights the challenge that this issue often presents. The employee was fired for violating the company policy against bringing guns to work, even though he testified that he had asked the employer to increase security at the store because he feared for his safety. The court sided with the employer, reinforcing the fact that business owners — not employees — have the right to determine what is necessary when it comes to guns in the workplace.

While Hillary roams the country making anti-gun speeches, some in the media are hard at work convincing us that she’s not all that bad.

You and I are supposed to forget that in the early autumn of 2015, Hillary Clinton said the U.S. Supreme Court got it “wrong on the Second Amendment.”

Actually, we weren’t even supposed to hear her say this. Someone leaked an audio recording from a private fundraiser hosted in Greenwich Village in New York City.

This week the American political sphere is filled with news coming from the Republican National Convention and one state’s attorney general decided to use the RNC as a convenient distraction to sneak in new gun restrictions targeting Second Amendment rights.

In an article published at the Boston Globe, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy noted that, starting Wednesday, her office is “sending a directive to all gun manufacturers and dealers that makes clear that the sale of these copycat assault weapons is illegal in Massachusetts.”

With the third round of speeches set to begin Wednesday, there was little mention of guns at the Republican National Convention. Next week’s Democratic convention in Philadelphia, however, is expected to be gun talk-heavy, with gun control groups making appearances at the nominating event.

Moms Demand Action and its parent group, Everytown for Gun Safety, are expected to draw hundreds of supporters with a focus on gun violence victims, the group said in a press release.

I agreed with your theory about what our Founding Fathers probably took for granted in the late 18th century – namely that owning a gun for protection and for hunting was a necessity for many. A hunting rifle, a shotgun – the expectation was that most people, especially outside of the cities, would have such a weapon. I think you are correct when you say that our Founding Fathers never gave restricting that right a second thought and although I am not a hunter myself, I have no problem with someone who wishes to hunt to feed their family.

I disagree wholeheartedly, however, with your interpretation of the Second Amendment.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. — Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith in 1787. Taken from Jefferson, On Democracy p. 20, S. Padover ed., 1939
