There are a lot of gun owners in the Tennessee Valley. And sometimes, they want their weapon to blend in or stand out. That's when they turn to Cole Baker. Baker Hydrographics on Huntsville's South Memorial Parkway looks like any other business on the outside, but inside, there’s a lot of camo. Cole was show us a beaver, bobcat, coyote and deer skull he had done for customers. He then picked up a shotgun stock with a camo pattern and remarked, “This is very effective in our area.”

It began in April. That's when there appeared on YouTube an NRA recruitment video that raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. Darrin Fesler held his breath. He concentrated. When he slowly exhaled, his left index finger made the kind of small motion that someone standing nearby could barely discern. The following boom was like a blast of air, and Fesler jolted from the recoil of the .270 caliber hunting rifle he pointed downrange at the Fernan Rod and Gun Club along the Fernan Road five miles north of Coeur d’Alene.

Lots of us ask for 144 character solutions. That is too bad. These faux answers might sooth our conscience, but they seldom work out well. For example, this week I read some crime reports where we disarmed the victims rather than the bad guys.

In theory, gun laws stop armed criminals. In practice, gun laws only disarm law abiding citizens.

That is the difference between fantasy and reality. (380 words at the link)

He was Canadian minister of Defense in 1960s, ruling over the country’s armed forces during the time of the Cold War — and when he retired he publicly stated that we are not alone in the universe, and some guests from outer space actually live here, on planet Earth. Is this fantasy? Is someone actually watching us? Today we ask the man who says UFOs are a serious business — Paul Hellyer.

If you asked me “to pick a handgun cartridge that seems to be suffering from a Napoleonic complex,” I would, without hesitation, shout out, “the 9mm Luger!” Brain-child of the famous Austrian gun and cartridge designer, Georg Johann Luger, his 9mm namesake — first released in 1902 — has gone on to become the most prolific handgun and submachine gun cartridge on the planet. In fact, in terms of popularity, the 9mm Luger has essentially supplanted all other pistol caliber cartridges in use by law enforcement, military and civilians alike around the world.

Violence happens too often in America, but we are not as violent as we have been in even the recent past. If we stay serious about doing better, we might someday look like a different country. Even here, in our beautiful, laid-back corner of America, we struggle with violence. Just recently, in less than a week, two people were shot to death near Rainier Playfield in Seattle. And last week, a man was shot during what was described as a gunbattle at Golden Gardens Park.

I voted for Agricultural Commissioner Adam Putnam, but I will not vote for him to be our next governor. The reason? Guns. Putnam's determination to allow guns on our campuses and open carry in our state shows a serious lack of judgment and a blatant disregard for the will of a majority of Floridians.

We’re getting close to small game season, which will be closely followed by the many and various deer seasons.
To me, that means it’s time to take to the woods for some scouting hikes. Now, we’re not all small game hunters and not everyone hunts deer. But if you want to find out where your particular game will be, give scouting a try.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. — JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821)
