A 29-year-old man was arrested after he celebrated the Fourth of July by firing an assault-style rifle in the air at his West Seattle home, according to a police statement. He was booked into King County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm. Court records show the man’s prior charges include taking a motor vehicle without permission, residential burglary and theft of a firearm, police say. As a felon, he cannot legally possess a gun.

Assault weapons may be banned without violating the Second Amendment, and this is true even though American citizens own millions of these weapons. Why? These weapons are not commonly used for self-defense in the home — and banning them is a reasonable response to the plague of mass shootings.

What if I told you there’s a 1911 you can use for concealed carry all week and then—in a few minutes—easily convert to a pistol for varmint hunting on the weekend? Let me explain: Nearly 45 years ago Smith & Wesson came out with the centerfire .22 Jet, chambered in a K-Frame revolver. The concept promised much and delivered little. The cartridge simply would not work in a revolver chamber, and no matter what we tried, the fired cases slammed up against the recoil shield, locking up the cylinder.

CA: A Case Study in The Failure of Gun Control

Just days ago, Governor Jerry Brown signed new gun controls into law. Those controls include a requirement that ammunition purchasers go through a background check just like firearms purchasers and “impose new restrictions on assault weapons,” according to the New York Times. It is crucial to note that the “new restrictions on assault weapons” are the result of the old restrictions being circumvented. Although this circumvention was lawful in some cases — via the use of bullet buttons to remove magazines — the fact that it happened so easily only bolsters arguments from the NRA, Gun Owners of America, Breitbart News, and others who stress that gun control does not prevent criminals from getting the guns they need.

The incident was caught on camera and has since garnered over tens of thousands of views on Facebook and plenty of feedback from you at home who had questions on the Castle Doctrine, a law passed two years ago that enables homeowners to protect themselves from intruders.

Associate Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, 79, died Feb. 13, 2016, after serving on the court since 1986. The conservative jurist was known to be a great wit who loved his country dearly. On America’s birthday, here are some of his most notable remarks:

1. “If it was up to me, I would have thrown this bearded, sandal-wearing, flag-burner into jail, but it was not up to me.”

Scalia explained to students his views on free speech, including flag-burning, and the need to protect the First Amendment for everyone.

They were learning to read in Newtown, watching movies in Aurora, having a party in San Bernardino, dancing in Orlando. Then they were massacred with a military assault rifle.
After each horrific shooting, the Second Amendment was used to justify doing nothing in Congress, where gun control legislation has long been blocked from even getting a vote.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling banning all domestic violence offenders from owning guns drew differing responses from Wyoming’s congressional delegation. The 6-2 ruling on June 27 upheld the broad reach of a law that Congress passed in 1996 barring people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from owning guns. Wyoming’s congresswoman opposed the decision, saying denying a person’s Second Amendment rights for life is too harsh in many cases, while the state’s two U.S. senators were more cautious in their reactions.

A Tennessee law that went into effect July 1, 2016 deals specifically with businesses that prohibit firearms on the premises. Under the law, these businesses will be responsible for the safety of customers with handgun carry permits while these customers are on the premise or going to and from where their gun is stored. This responsibility covers instances of other customers' behavior, trespassers, employees' conduct, vicious or wild animals, and defensible man-made and natural.

Voters won't only cast ballots for the next president, their senator or congressman this November, but many will also have the chance to enact laws of their own. About half of the country -- 26 states plus Washington, D.C. -- have ballot initiatives or referendum processes in which average citizens can try to change existing state law or create new laws. While many states don't have their slate of initiatives finalized yet, proposals are now circulating for signatures and they provide a snapshot of what could become law if they qualify for ballots and voters approve them.

Commenting on the Islamist terror attack at the Pulse night club in Orlando, Fla., and the push for more gun control laws by liberals, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) explained that more restrictions only punish law-abiding citizen gun-owners and that if the patrons at Pulse had been armed, the terrorist likely never would have gone there and it’s likely that no one would have been shot.

I have an idea. The federal government needs to compile a list of women who shouldn’t be allowed to get abortions. The criteria for getting on the list must be flexible. If an official at, say, the NIH or FBI thinks that a woman should be a mother for some reason or other, he or she can block an abortion. Maybe the woman has great genes or a high IQ or the sorts of financial resources we need in parents. Let’s leave that decision where it belongs: in the hands of the government.

As the ancient Chinese proverb says, from crisis comes opportunity. That is certainly true for Garen Wintemute, a leading gun-violence researcher and emergency room doctor who finds “teaching moments” in the grief-filled days and weeks following mass shootings in America. He is using a window of opportunity recently opened by the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, to bring attention to the issue.

Breitbart News reported on June 30 that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) blinked days after a Democrat-sponsored sit-in, announcing he would allow a gun control vote this week. Representative Justin Amash (R-Mich-3rd), however, has issued a warning about HR 5611. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-23) sponsored the legislation and framed it in the language of fighting terrorism.

In June, I had the honor of attending one of the top journalism conferences in the country, if not the world. For three days, I rubbed shoulders with reporters from places such as The New York Times, USA Today, and ProPublica. Call me naïve, but I expected to learn about fairness, integrity, and hard work. This means giving equal weight to politically divisive issues such as gun rights, women’s health, and policing. Instead, during some training sessions I watched top professionals in their fields encouraging political bias against conservatives before reporters’ pens could even hit paper.

The House of Representatives returns to legislative session Tuesday after a nearly two-week respite. Democrats are again planning a donnybrook over guns. The House first meets at noon for short speeches and then 2 p.m. for legislative business. No votes are planned until 6:30 p.m. But some Democrats plan to pick up with the firearms fight precisely where they left off in late June with an unprecedented sit-in on the House floor.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crime. — Cesare Beccaria, quoted by Thomas Jefferson
