The Gila Fish and Gun Club sponsored their annual summer gun show at the Hanover Outpost over the weekend, and organizer George Shepard said about 1,000 people came out to shop and peruse items sold by about 35 vendors. Wares included firearms, accessories, knives, memorabilia, jewelry and food. “Attendance was slightly down this year,” he said.

Soft Point Cutting Edge Ammo: SPCE Bullets Explained

The soft point cutting edge bullet (SPCE) is essentially a modified semi-jacketed bullet that’s been designed to expand in a very controlled fashion. Unlike a standard soft-point or hollow point where the core is often bonded with the casing, this bullet doesn’t lock the lead core in completely. Some call it “water bottle” ammo, because the point of the bullet is vaguely designed similar to a pet hamster’s water bottle. The core isn’t bonded to the casing, allowing a different style of expansion and penetration.

The Ida and Dundee trapshooting teams fared well in state and national competitions.

A couple of local high school trapshooting teams did Monroe County proud with their showings at the Michigan and National Scholastic Clay Target Program competitions with Ida High School taking first at state and Dundee’s Middle School team taking first in state and fifth at nationals.

Ida coach Brad LaVoy said it was the third time in the past four years that Ida’s varsity brought home the state title, winning it previously in 2016 and 2018.

“It was a great day. I’m very, very proud of the team,” he said, adding the team had plenty of community support during the shoot, held in near Lansing in late June.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu just did something that infuriated the gun prohibition lobby, while providing Second Amendment activists some hope that at least one politician isn’t buckling to the anti-gun-rights agenda in the wake of three high-profile shootings for which American gun owners are not responsible.

Once more I find myself in the unenviable position of disagreeing with one of America’s brightest legal minds, John Yoo. In January, Professor Yoo and I debated the legality of various aspects of the Trump administration’s border-wall emergency declaration. Today, I’m going to dissent from his assertion in an NRO article published last week that universal background checks (UBCs) — as applied to intrastate transfers between private citizens — are constitutionally kosher.

"The problem with the Second Amendment..." Some people would not read farther before deciding that whoever wrote the preceding phrase must be an enemy of freedom and rights. After all, the text of the amendment ends with "shall not be infringed," so that should be all one has to say. Reality, however, is more complex, as recent history bears out.

The U.S. Supreme Court will start its next term after a summer punctuated by mass shootings that left more than two dozen dead, heightening the impact of pending cases that focus on when civilians can carry weapons in public. The most immediate matter involves a New York City ordinance that placed severe limitations on transporting handguns that are locked and unloaded. The high court agreed in January to take up the dispute between three residents and the city government, marking the first time since 2010 — when it struck down Chicago’s handgun ban — the Supreme Court would hear a Second Amendment case.

After mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio killed a collective 31 people, gun control is back in the national discussion. As many are calling for more firearm regulations, Florida State Rep. Mike Hill, who represents most of Escambia County, filed a bill to roll back regulations already on the books.

Here we go again. Another mass shooting followed by demands for more gun control on one side and calls for more armed citizens on the other. The inflammatory rhetoric over who to blame coupled with claims that something—anything—be done to stop the next one sings like static television noise. Simultaneously, Democrat politicians fundraise off of someone else's misery.

Rep. Jason Lowe (D-Oklahoma City) said he doesn't think House Bill 2597, or "permitless carry," is right for the state of Oklahoma. He has filed a petition to gather signatures to block the bill from becoming law as scheduled on Nov. 1. Lowe said Oklahoma needs to have more restrictive gun laws, not ones with less oversight.

Republicans working to re-elect President Donald Trump sent volunteers to a voter drive at a gun show in Pembroke Pines over the weekend. During campaign cycles, it's not uncommon for members of both major political parties to hold registration drives to sign up new voters. But the timing of the show—just one week after the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton—drew concerns from local residents and gun control protesters.

6 Ways Bill Clinton Is Lying About His Assault Weapons ‘Ban’

It comes as no surprise that on Aug. 9 Time magazine published former president Bill Clinton’s op-ed calling for Congress to “reinstate” his so-called “ban” on so-called “assault weapons.” For decades, Time has been one of the media’s most extreme opponents of the right to keep and bear arms. In 1968, ahead of a Democrat-majority Congress’ and President Lyndon B. Johnson’s imposition of the Gun Control Act, the magazine published an article arguing “[T]he U.S. must have gun legislation. . . . [L]icensing for the owner, registration for each of his firearms . . . would hardly be an outrageous imposition.”

In 1990, President George H.W. Bush committed one of the greatest betrayals in modern political history. He backtracked on his “Read my lips, no new taxes” pledge, and he got hammered in the next election for his betrayal. He lost. Rush Limbaugh has warned that Republicans are making the same “Read my lips” mistake by pursuing a gun control compromise with Democrats.

The first bulletproof shield Joshua Christensen bought was for his 14-year-old daughter. He slid it into the back of the flashy pink backpack that she carries to middle school each day and told her: “Don’t take this out. This is just in case something happens.” Christensen has long worried that the next school shooting could happen here in Utah. And he grasped for something — anything — that might protect his little girl, Marissa, in case a gunman stormed into her classroom like at Stoneman Douglas. Or Sandy Hook. Or Columbine.

More than 10,000 firearms have been turned into New Zealand police as part of a government effort to buy back guns after the Christchurch massacre, authorities said Monday. New Zealand banned most automatic and semi-automatic weapons and components that modify existing weapons after the shooting that left 51 people dead and scores injured at two mosques in March. The country also established a buy-back program to allow gun owners to be compensated for turning in their weapons.

In the wake of three mass shootings in two weeks across the country, the mayor of San Jose, Calif., on Monday proposed what is being called a first-in-the-nation move to require all gun owners to carry liability insurance for their weapons. Under the proposal by Mayor Sam Liccardo, the insurance would cover any accidental discharge of a firearm and any intentional acts carried out by a person who has stolen or borrowed the gun. It would not cover the policyholder for any intentional discharge that he or she carries out.

City flags in San Rafael are flying at full-staff again Monday. During a City Council meeting on Aug. 5, Mayor Gary Phillips ordered the city’s flags lowered to half-staff until Congress takes meaningful action to protect American cities from gun violence. “I’ve been asked a number of times to lower the flag in honor, which I have always done,” Phillips said to reporters last week. “But in this case, I’m not going to put the flags back up until I see some action by Congress. I think it’s way past time for them to get off their dime and do something about this matter.”

During his appearance on Crooked Media's Lovett or Leave It podcast, comedian Larry Wilmore argued that some guns should be called "weapons of mass destruction" and implied support for gun confiscation. According to Wilmore, calling certain types of firearms "assault weapons" does not go far enough to convey the damage they cause. Referring to last week's shooting in Dayton, Ohio, Wilmore said, "I believe in 30 seconds, if you can kill nine people and injure over 20, you don't have a gun, you have a weapon of mass destruction," Wilmore said. "So that is the language that we're going to have to use."
