A couple of trainers have fairly recently started to use the word “hobbyist” to refer to, well, the sort of people they claim they don’t cater to. The normal pejorative in these circumstances would be “gamer,” but that’s not accurate in this case because plenty of the people to whom the epithet was directed only casually shoot competitively, if at all. Instead, the targeted demographic consists of people who have taken on shooting in general—and perhaps self-defense-specific shooting in particular—as a hobby. People who get to the range more than once a quarter, take multiple classes on the topic, etc.

The Pentagon has signed off on a new policy that will allow military bases to shoot down private or commercial drones that are deemed a threat, Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis said Monday. The policy itself is classified and was transmitted to the services in July, Davis said. Broadly, it outlines the rules of engagement for a base when a private or commercial drone is encroaching upon its airspace. On Friday, unclassified guidance was sent to each of the services on how to communicate the new policy to local communities.

Gov. Rick Scott chooses his legal battles the way President Trump selects White House communications directors. Only the ones who ultimately pay the price are Florida taxpayers. The Associated Press reports that since Scott took office in 2011, the state has paid at least $19 million to cover expenses and fees for lawyers who have sued the state. He recently agreed to pay $1.1 million to cover the legal bills of physicians and medical organizations who successfully challenged the “docs vs. Glocks” law that prohibited doctors from talking to their patients about guns.

Guns have been integral to our country since November 15, 1620. Why then? It's when Miles Standish and his troops carried matchlock muskets as they explored Cape Cod and the New World. Throughout our country's history, notable athletes, actors and actresses have been hunters, shooters, or both. As the most powerful person in America is our President, let's have a look at some of their favorite firearms and fun they have had while shooting them.

The Second Amendment Foundation today took an extraordinary step Monday by issuing a first-of-its-kind “travel advisory” to American gun owners, warning them to stay out of California.

“Right now,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb, “I wouldn’t suggest to any gun owner that they even travel through the state, much less to it as their final destination.”

On Thursday, New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino bragged that the state had taken in nearly 5,000 firearms in its recent “buyback,” and proclaimed residents to be safer as a result. “Take every gun that can fire a bullet and hurt or kill someone for $100, $120, $200, we'll spend that every day of the week,” Porrino told news12.com. “It’s money well-spent.” Rather than money well-spent, it was really just smoke, mirrors and feel-good puffery.

Energized by Donald Trump’s coarsely confrontational nationalism, the armed right-wing fringe is doing more than stepping out of the shadows in 2017. Detachments of armed men in fatigues have become fixtures at liberal protests, forming the vanguard of what’s become known in some quarters as the “counter-resistance.”

State Rep. Nino Vitale is pretty confident he can take care of himself: he is a firearms instructor who routinely carries a weapon, he has 25 years of martial arts training and he runs 20 miles a week. But state law prohibits the Urbana Republican from carrying his concealed guns inside the Ohio Statehouse and other government buildings. Given today’s hyper-charged political environment and the recent shooting at a Congressional softball team practice, Vitale wants to change that.

At first glance, not many people would guess that Beth Alcazar of Chelsea, Alabama, owns guns and has a concealed carry permit. Much less would they take a look at her and assume that she’s an action pistol competitor, NRA lifetime member, and USCCA-certified firearms training counselor. In other words, if there’s a stereotype for gun ownership, this outgoing wife and mother of three is probably not the image that comes to mind. But the face of gun owners is changing in Alabama and across the nation.
