Precision Rifle: Getting Zeroed

One problem many beginning F-Class and precision shooters will have is getting zeroed for 600 to 1000 yards using the local 100- or 200-yard range. All you’ll need to do this is a chronograph, ballistics software or app, a large target and a tape measure. First chronograph at least five rounds of your load, and average the velocities. Next, use this average velocity, along with your bullet’s ballistic coefficient (BC), to develop a trajectory table for your load using your ballistics software of choice. Some programs include BCs for many bullets. Other programs may require you to enter a BC value, which can be obtained from the manufacturer’s website or catalog.

With the clear resurgence of 10 mm as a popular cartridge, ammunition manufacturers are churning out new options, both in affordable range fodder and purpose-built self-defense ammo. One of the latest players to enter the market is Speer, adding a 10 mm version of its popular Gold Dot Personal Protection load for the round. Unlike some 10 mm self-defense loads on the market, the Speer option isn't a watered-down version that produces terminal ballistics similar to that of .40 S&W.

It would seem like those two things have nothing to do with each other, but you’d be surprised at what the one has to do with the other. How so? Florida’s “red flag law” as well as similar statutes in a few other states give those states the ability to seize the firearms of certain persons that are deemed a risk to themselves or others. Conditions must be met, of course; the person has to have a history of mental illness, pose a suicide risk, be subject to a domestic violence restraining order or – depending on the individual law in question – something to that effect.

As Levi’s signature jeans gained popularity amongst a wider set in the middle of the last century, the pants came to symbolize American freedom. As Stanford Historian Niall Ferguson points out in his book, Civilization: The West and the Rest, during the Cold War, the American pants were so desirable behind the Iron Curtain that citizens would break any number of laws to obtain them.

After news surfaced that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is contemplating whether to allow states to use federal money to purchase guns for educators, local officials cautioned against such measures, emphasizing the importance of entrusting trained law enforcement officers. "I don't like the idea of arming educators and putting that responsibility on them,” Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp said. “I think we ought to be arming our law enforcement officers and putting law enforcement in schools.
