The manhunt for an anti-government survivalist accused of fatally shooting a Pennsylvania State Police trooper and wounding another outside their Pike County barracks entered its sixth day Wednesday.
Trooper Thomas Kelly, a State Police spokesman, said he had no "pertinent information" to release from an overnight search effort. Officials issued an arrest warrant Tuesday for Eric Matthew Frein, 31, who faces first-degree murder and other charges in the shooting death Friday of Cpl. Bryon Dickson II. Dickson, a 38-year-old married father of two, was shot during a shift change outside the barracks in Blooming Grove. Trooper Alex Douglass, 31, was wounded as he arrived for duty. |

The man alleged to have shot two Pennsylvania police officers on Sept. 12 stalked them on a cool night under a gibbous moon. He hid in woods at the edge of game lands in rural Blooming Grove, Pa. And, at around 10:50 p.m., he fired, killing one man and seriously wounding another.
Eric Matthew Frein, 31, of Canadensis, Pa., has been charged with this inexplicable crime. But state police said he has a philosophy: survivalism.
What is it?
In short: a stark worldview that fuses, in varying degrees, millennialism, Second Amendment and hard-money advocacy, environmentalism and racism.

Residents of the nation’s capital will be able to get licenses to carry concealed handguns outside the home, but only after they provide a specific reason for needing one, officials said Wednesday.
Mayor Vincent Gray and other city officials said they plan to propose legislation that would make the District of Columbia similar to a half-dozen states, including Maryland, where residents can be denied a concealed-carry permit if they can’t show a need for one. The Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to Maryland’s law last year. |

Police said the alleged shooter remained on scene and told police he was there to pick up a motorcycle when he was approached by the victim.
The victim apparently attempted to rob the shooter, but the shooter pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said.
The alleged robber was shot three times in the stomach and transported to University Hospital in serious condition. |

Lake Ozark officials are expected to reconsider an ordinance passed several weeks ago that bans open carry of a gun in public after the Missouri Legislature overturned a gun law veto by Gov. Jay Nixon.
The city has yet to make an official statement.
The law, passed by the legislature but vetoed by Nixon, allows anyone with a concealed weapons permit to carry guns openly, even in towns like Lake Ozark with bans against the open carry of firearms. The Legislature voted during a special veto session earlier this month to overturn many of Nixon’s bills, including the gun legislation. |

On August 27 2014, MarketWatch.com, supposedly a website for stock market investors, published a cynical article about gun manufacturers and gun ownership, titled 10 Things the Gun Industry Won’t Tell You.

While that was one victory for the Second Amendment, we still have work to do. Assembly Bill 1014, introduced by Nancy Skinner (D – Berkeley), received final legislative approval on August 29 and has been submitted to the Governor for his signature. This bill weakens constitutional guarantees governing private property rights and establishes new regulations regarding the confiscation of firearms. On March 6th of this year the Idaho legislature approved a bill that would allow people with enhanced licenses to carry guns on college campuses; one week later that bill was signed into law.
Reporter Sophia Miraglio looks at the effects of that decision and what is being done to ensure the safety of everyone.
Citing second amendment rights and safety for students, Senate Bill 1254 became law making Idaho the seventh state to allow guns on campus. So the question now is: Are schools safer than they were before? |

When it comes to protecting the rights of gun owners, Colorado received a "C" grade, based on a national review of state laws in 30 different weapon-related areas.
The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence awarded points for having what it considered effective legislation in each policy area, with more points awarded for tougher laws.
The final letter grade showed the state's overall strength or weakness. California received an A- and continues to boast the most stringent gun reform measures in the country, while Arizona, Alaska, Wyoming, and South Dakota represent the states with the broadest interpretation of Second Amendment rights. |

In virtually every press account this tragedy has been labeled “accidental.” We suppose it was in the sense that what transpired was unintentional.
But there are accidents, and there are situations where the behavior is so negligent — in this case from the girl’s parents, from the instructor himself, from the tour company, from the state of anything-goes Arizona — that those involved are asking for something bad to happen. |

The chairperson of Davenport's Civil Rights Commission says while he respects anyone's right to "concealed carry" under state law, actually seeing it out in the open is something else. Tim Hart says, "It's intimidating to try to conduct a public meeting with two loaded guns sitting on the table." He says that's what happened at meetings over the past few months, Council Liaison Bill Edmond brought his gun. It's something Hart says prompted commissioners to call for a gun free zone. "We were going to pass a motion, and it would have been a unanimous decision to do so, to make it a weapon free zone." |

But the Obama Administration has modified the form in order to glean even more information about gun buyers – and it made the change in relative silence. Perhaps that’s why stories about outraged gun owners are just now making the rounds, even though the form was amended back in 2012.
It’s a subtle change, and one many people may not have noticed, if they’ve ever had to fill out the form more than once. Before 2012, Form 4473 asked “applicants” (an absurd term for an American citizen intending to buy a gun) to identify their race. Since 2012, the form asks for both racial and ethnic background information. |

The D.C. Council and mayor are collaborating on an emergency bill that would regulate residents’ ability to carry legally registered guns outside their homes.
A federal court ruling in July struck down the District’s prohibitions against carrying guns in public, and the city’s attempt to draft legislation outlining parameters for legal gun carry comes as officials are deciding whether to appeal that decision. |

For the first time since it became required in 2012 for new gun buyers to show their race and ethnicity on the federal Form 4473, the demand for that information – an Obama administration idea designed to comply with a reporting standard adopted during the Clinton administration – is now being questioned, according to yesterday’s Washington Times. |

A Clallam County jury Wednesday found Casey Joseph Balch not guilty of murder or manslaughter in the June 2012 death of Donald Knechtel.
...
Knechtel, 48, of Marysville, died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle about a week after he was punched in the face and subsequently fractured his skull as he fell to the ground in the parking lot of the Front Street Alibi bar in Port Angeles.
Balch admitted that he had punched Knechtel but maintained that he did not intend to kill him.
Unger argued that her client struck Knechtel in self-defense after Knechtel's friend, Clint Crook of Bothell, put her client in a headlock.

There were few surprises during Sunday’s U.S. Senate debate, except when the frontrunner, GOP nominee Ben Sasse, seemed to stumble on a question about gun rights just days after being endorsed by the National Rifle Association.
Sasse earned the highest NRA rating a candidate can get without a voting record, and marked the group’s only endorsement in the general election. But he seemed confused when asked a question about background checks at gun shows by Colleen Williams, anchor for NTV, an ABC affiliate in Kearney. |

While he and his Attorney General Eric Holder complain about police racially profiling blacks and Hispanics, President Barack Obama’s administration is racially profiling American citizens who purchase firearms at licensed gun shops in the United States, according the few news outlets actually covering the story on Tuesday.

A Mississippi coroner who advised residents to arm themselves and shoot home intruders said yesterday that he had been angered over a recent spate of burglaries and was not seeking to drum up business.
David Scott Gregory, 40, the coroner of largely rural Winston County in eastern Mississippi, went on social media over the weekend to urge residents to buy guns and be willing to use them on burglars.
“I say shoot the idiots and call the Coroner!” Gregory wrote on Facebook. “I’d hate for any innocent people to get hurt but at the same time my stuff is my stuff, my hill is my hill.” |
