First, let me say it’s good to be back after missing last week’s column. It's been a helluva past two weeks. I’m certain I don’t need to remind you of Irma as I’m pretty confident that you were subjected to the same hysterical media coverage I experienced. Speaking of Irma, let me just get this out of the way right now.

After a 15-year-old student opened fire at a high school near Spokane, Washington, earlier this week, the Spokane County Sheriff gave a defense of the Second Amendment that would make the Founding Fathers proud. What did he say? During a lengthy press conference on Thursday, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich explained in no uncertain terms that he believes a breakdown in society helped the teenage student execute his rampage, which took the life of one person and injured three others. It wasn’t the gun, the sheriff explained while defending the Second Amendment.

I suppose that it is human nature, but most of us tend to do the same thing when we focus on a difficult task. We tend to pull the object in close to our bodies, about belly high, and bend over slightly to focus on what we are doing. That seems to get the job done for most of the tasks that we encounter in life, but it can get you killed in a gunfight.

Armed personal defense and concealed carry remain major driving forces behind today’s firearm and accessory market. And for as much energy and innovation are expended on creating firearms to satisfy this growing segment, there is perhaps even more inertia and diversity in the plethora of products designed to discretely carry such guns. Holsters for concealed carry, especially those designed for inside-the-waistband wear, are as diverse as the self-defense philosophies espoused by their users, and are available in myriad configurations differing in design, construction material and intended carry position.

Earlier this week, we wrote about a mass shooting in Plano, Texas, in which Spencer Hight shot and killed his estranged wife, Meredith, and seven of the friends who had gathered at her house for a cookout and Dallas Cowboys watch party. Hight was killed by police who responded to 911 calls, raising the death toll to nine. But did you know it was the second mass shooting this year involving a domestic dispute that left eight victims dead?

A Colton man was charged by Potsdam police after discharging a pellet gun on Sisson Street Sept. 15 at 12:32 p.m. Justyn A. Fountain, 32, was charged with “firearm discharge in the village.” It should be noted that pellet guns fire on charges of air or gas pressure, not ignited gunpowder charges like firearms. Except in rare instances, pellet guns are known to produce substantially less foot pounds per inch upon impact of the pellet than a bullet from an actual firearm.

It’s almost time to dust off the blaze orange — and new to Virginia this autumn “hot pink” — hunting gear. That’s right, lady hunters — and men if they choose — have the option of sporting fluorescent pink instead of traditional Day-Glo orange this 2017-18 hunting season, all thanks to a bill that cleared Virginia’s General Assembly this year.

They say past is prologue. Let’s hope so in this fall’s election for Virginia attorney general. In a state of so many founders that advanced the cause of individual liberty, religious freedom and the rule of law, Republican John Adams is running for attorney general on a record and platform that fully embraces this cause. Not only does Virginia’s John Adams share the Massachusetts founder’s name and principles, but he’s actually related to Presidents John and John Quincy Adams.

The old Clarn barrel percussion rifle is a beauty, with its uniquely patterned maple stock, brass hardware and silver plaque featuring an eagle and 13 stars. But this powerful firearm made around 1860 wasn’t destined for an easy life of indoor display. Likely used for shooting big game such as buffalo, it worked hard, riding perpendicular across a saddle and possibly hitting the ground more than once.

It's not often a democratic Arizona lawmaker joins forces with the National Rifle Association. But Saturday, Rep. Diego Espinoza, D-Tolleson, and the NRA joined West Valley law enforcement in a nonpartisan effort to teach children about gun safety. The event, held at Pot of Gold Estate auction house in downtown Avondale, utilized the NRA's Eddie Eagle gun safety program to teach kids from kindergarten through fifth grade.

There are a few constants when it comes to gun safety. Obviously, the 4 Rules of Gun Safety are paramount when it comes to handling and for shooting. Carrying in an appropriate concealed carry holster is another. Another is that you need a gun safe for storing firearms, whether you use or carry it on a regular basis or not. This is especially important if you have children in the house, and I don’t just mean toddlers.

Two former top Obama-appointed prosecutors co-author a diatribe against Trump attorney general Jeff Sessions for returning the Justice Department to purportedly outdated, too “tough on crime” charging practices. Yawn. After eight years of Justice Department stewardship by Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch, and after Obama’s record 1,715 commutations that systematically undermined federal sentencing laws, we know the skewed storyline.

Did you realize you have a right to not be offended? That you have a right to other people’s property and their labor? Were you unaware that you, as a citizen, have the same rights in the United States of America as an illegal alien? These are among the newly declared “rights” Democrats have bestowed on people through the power of simply saying they exist. The problem is this concept is fundamentally un-American.

A new state law means that hunters in Illinois can use crossbows during archery hunting seasons. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that new law applies to the state's archery deer season and fall turkey archery season starting Oct. 1 and ending Jan. 14. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the bill changing state wildlife code to repeal restrictions on using crossbows during archery hunting season.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them. — Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States; With a Preliminary Review of the Constitutional History of the Colonies and States before the Adoption of the Constitution [Boston, 1833].
