At least seven juveniles and an adult have been arrested in connection to guns stolen from a Cabela's outdoor retailer in Grandville.
Additionally, police are continuing a multi-department investigation with the belief that they have not arrested everyone connected to this incident, according to Grandville Police Sgt. Renee Veldman of the Grandville Police Department.
"All of the departments are working very hard and a lot of long hours at trying to bring this to a resolution," she said.
Veldman said there are still stolen firearms unaccounted for, but declined to say how many were taken in total, citing the pending investigation. |

This week, Senate Bill 169 passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with a vote of 3-2. SB 169 would allow for the concealed carry of a firearm without a concealed carry license anywhere in the state where an individual is legally allowed to be.

Fort Morgan Mayor Ron Shaver recently proclaimed September to be Constitution Month in the city, and City Attorney Jason Meyers is doing what he can to promote that proclamation.
On Thursday, that meant heading over to Baker Elementary School and giving an afternoon presentation about the U.S. Constitution to two classes of fifth-grade students.
"The Constitution makes sure we have a foundation for laws in this country," he told the kids.
Meyers went over the parts of the Constitution. He offered insight into what they do and what they mean for people in this country, including the young students in front of him.
He started with the Bill of Rights, going over the first five amendments. |

The Wisconsin state assembly is seeking to repeal a concealed and carry law, which would allow 18 year olds to bring guns onto school property, into police stations and jails, and reduce related penalties. It even allows people to carry tasers and “shine” animals in wildlife refuges while carrying a weapon. The bill removes training and permit requirements for anyone who wants to carry a concealed weapon. This bill goes too far. Tell your Wisconsin representatives to protect our kids. Time is running out. Tell them now to vote "no" on Assembly-Bill 247. |

So what could be done to cut violent crime? Smith suggests limiting lead exposure, which he says “increases violent behavior in adulthood.” He also calls for the decriminalization of drugs, for treating drug use as a “disease instead of crime” to immediately decrease the number of people entering the U.S. prison system. He says that providing an education to people who are already in the prison system should be a priority, as he believes education would reduce recidivism. Furthermore, he believes community-based policing should be adopted throughout the nation.

A survey of evangelical leaders now making the rounds in Christian media suggests that influential pastors could be a conduit to a broader gun-reform coalition. The crucial caveat: More of them would need to decide to speak up on the issue.
The poll found that among top evangelical officials, 55 percent support stricter gun laws, even as a solid majority say they live in gun-owning households. Only 5 percent support relaxing existing gun laws.
Those views put church leaders at odds with their congregations. |

A University of Missouri law professor who wants to carry a gun on campus says the university is retaliating against him for challenging its gun prohibition as unconstitutional.
Two years ago, Royce de R. Barondes sued the UM System Board of Curators and the system president claiming that policies prohibiting guns on the Columbia campus violated state statute on guns and the Missouri Constitution.
Now, in documents filed with the Circuit Court of Boone County, Barondes and his lawyers claim the university is retaliating against the associate professor with counter legal action.
They claim the university is going after Barondes because he filed a lawsuit that he believes defends his constitutional right to keep and bear firearms. |

Most concealed-carry permit holders understand the potential pitfalls of traveling with a firearm, given the outrageous patchwork of state laws involved in even a short interstate trip. And while we haven’t posted much about reciprocity of late, important national concealed-carry reciprocity legislation is still in play and needs your help now to gain passage.
According to a recent update from NRA-ILA, U.S. Rep. Rob Goodlatte, R-Va., who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has signed on as a co-sponsor for the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. H.R. 38 now has 212 co-sponsors, and according to NRA-ILA, its prospects in the House are looking better each week. |

The difference in tone is partly explained by the second amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which spells out the right to bear arms. A few gun lobbyists may think Canadians have a similar right, but that’s not actually the case, Farrant said.

The media could contribute to the debate by reporting more completely the toll of firearms deaths and injuries. A comprehensive accounting could update the body count every day until we risked being sickened and enraged by the loss. What good would this do? Citizens might push legislatures to enact mandatory firearms liability insurance. In states such as Maryland, where guns kill more people than motor vehicles, we should be constantly reminded how much blood is spilled in preventable violence. If all who wanted to arm themselves had to qualify for insurance, gun owners would support gun locks and other safety devices. |

The Lake Mills School District discussed a policy change during its Sept. 11, meeting that could affect whether teachers can bring weapons to school that are secured and locked in their vehicle.
Board President Dr. Richard Mason said there is currently a policy prohibiting weapons on the school grounds by students, either loaded, unloaded, stored I their trunks for hunting, regardless, they can’t bring weapons onto school property.
“The question is, do you want the same level of prohibition for staff as well,” he asked. |

A bill that would loosen gun restrictions in Wisconsin is drawing a sharp response from City Hall here. The bill would allow people to carry concealed guns without a permit or training. Supporters say it's really not all that different from the law right now. Critics argue it will make gun violence even worse in urban areas.
Wisconsin would be the 13th state to approve permitless or constitutional carry. This week, the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee passed the bill on a 3-2 party-line vote. |

A 7-Eleven clerk pulled out a box cutter when threatened by one of four alleged shoplifters early Thursday in downtown Colorado Springs, police said.
Three females and one male entered the 7-Eleven at 503 S. Nevada Ave. about 1 a.m. Thursday and tried to steal items from the store, the clerk told police.
When the clerk confronted the group, she told police, one of the females said she had a knife. The clerk pulled out her own box cutter in self-defense, she told police. The suspected thieves fled the store. The car the group was riding in had been reported stolen, police said. |

Ohio could be the 25th state to have stand-your-ground laws.
That type of law means you don't have to retreat before using deadly force for self-defense out in public.
Most police officials say are on the side of having people retreat instead of using deadly force when possible.
The same kind of law was used as a defense for George Zimmerman in Florida back in 2012 after he shot and killed Trayvon Martin. |

Police are encouraging gun holders to take advantage of the final days of the national gun amnesty by handing in their firearms with no questions asked.
With eight days remaining in the three-month amnesty, 44 firearms have been handed in to police stations across the Great Southern — 29 rifles, 10 shotguns and five handguns.
In the same time, 737 firearms have been relinquished across the State, with the majority being rifles, as well as 40,000 rounds of ammunition. Police Licensing Enforcement Inspector Jeff Andrijasevich said the results of the first national amnesty since 1996 had pleased police and guns could still be brought in with no questions asked or penalty incurred.
