Your dad was a union worker. Your mom was a secretary. Having grown up in the white working class, why do you think that community is experiencing such high rates of opioid addiction, imprisonment and suicide? There’s not a simple answer we can point to. The one thing I am sure of is that if we generate stronger economic growth, an environment where people have jobs, where people are getting raises—that may not solve all problems, but it makes all problems easier to solve.

An impassioned crowd of around 40 people came out Sept. 19 to a public hearing on a law that, if enacted, would add Beacon to the list of cities and counties in the state that require secure storage of firearms and ammunition, including New York, Albany, Rochester and Westchester County. A proposal to make secure storage a state law was approved by the Assembly last year but failed in the Senate.

The rigorous, tedious and challenging planning and effort that goes into facilitating a Gun Rights Policy Conference is largely unseen by the attendees and would not be possible without the sacrifices and wonderful work ethic effort of the SAF team. A special thank you of course to Alan and Julianne Gottlieb for the vision and inspiration in making such an event possible and the superb individual performances of team members Andrew, Evgueni, Sarah, Jameson, Rose and Scott.

Thank you to everyone, both staff and those who chose to attend this year's event.

It’s the rare person who isn’t tickled to be affirmed, and we’re reveling—slightly—in that glow today. Over the last two weeks, we’ve had a chance to shoot a really fine 1911 on loan from Gunsite Academy’s COO Ken Campbell, and it’s been an all-around treat. We spent a week at Gunsite not long ago as part of A1F’s “observance,” if you will, of the 40th anniversary of Gunsite Academy and founder Col. Jeff Cooper’s “Modern Technique” (here and here). It was certainly time well spent: Not only did we get some world-class instruction to add to our own pistol craft, but also had a chance to shoot a Colt Gunsite Pistol—a Colt-manufactured 1911 made to Gunsite specifications.

About everyone who sees Courtland Hunt’s “Glock 9MM Fishing” video on YouTube has about the same initial reaction, his friends and family in Bradenton say.

That reaction is: “Did I just see what I thought I saw? Did that guy just shoot a lionfish with a handgun ... while diving deep underwater?”

The social media profiles for the alleged killer in a Burlington, Washington shooting spree depict a young man fascinated by guns, video games, and serial killers. Police arrested 20-year-old Arcan Cetin on Saturday night, after he allegedly opened fire in a Macy’s cosmetics department in a mall north of Seattle, killing four women and one man. Investigators have not announced a motive and say they have no evidence to suggest the shooting was an act of terrorism. But Cetin’s social media and court records suggest a long-held interest in guns, one which grew increasingly troubled within the last year.

Allison Plattsmier’s southern upbringing allows her to see both sides of the gun-control debate.

“Growing up in the South, everybody is pro-guns, and that is just the way it has always been,” she said. “Lots of people own guns. They are everywhere.”

Because guns are a big part of the culture for so many people, Plattsmier recognizes they will never be banned, as some gun-control advocates would prefer. But there are things that can – and should – be done to make them safer, she said.

Diners at the Grace restaurant sit under a vaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows in a former Methodist church built in the 1850s. Its cool, spiritual chic comes with a catch: No one who owns an assault rifle -- or even supports the right to own one -- is welcome. Grace’s owner, Anne Verrill, posted that dis-invitation on Facebook shortly after a June 12 shooting rampage at an Orlando nightclub killed 49 people. Verrill was outraged at yet another mass shooting, this time the worst one on US soil by a single assailant, and she had had enough.

Gun violence is not always intentional, as numerous deaths have occurred due to negligence or lack of gun safety knowledge. That was a topic of discussion before a shooting competition in Correctionville on Sunday.

"[It] breaks my heart to know that people can spend that kind of money on a firearm, but they can't spend $100 on a safe," says Chris Birdsell of the Tri-State Public Range Association.

The Tri-State Public Range Association has beefed up it's gun safety teachings amidst of the negligent or accidental shootings that happen too often.

Connecticut may not seem like a favorable landscape for the National Rifle Association, but that’s not stopping the nation’s leading gun-rights defender — or gun-lobby pariah, depending on your point of view — from issuing statewide 2016 election endorsements.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. — James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46
