Locking Up Guns, Medication is a Big Step Toward Suicide Prevention

The U.S. suicide rate is at an all-time high. We now lose more Americans to suicide than to traffic fatalities, breast cancer or prostate cancer. The recent suicides of musicians Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington focus public attention on suicide. But we typically lose that attention quickly because the work that lies ahead seems daunting. Our nation’s suicide rate is the result of complex social and economic trends contributing to the isolation, disempowerment and traumatization of the U.S. population.

More than a year after being exonerated in a self-defense shooting, Marcus Weldon is still aiming for justice.

He learned the Third Circuit Court and consequently, Michigan State Police, still had him listed as being free on bond after a state trooper pulled him over a few weeks ago.

That bond should have been cleared the day a Wayne County jury found him not guilty on seven felony charges.

"There's no way there should be a 15-month lag from the time he was exonerated till even today it's still not completely set," Weldon said.

An injustice is happening in San Diego County. And, the person causing the injustice is the county’s top law enforcement officer, Sheriff Bill Gore.

Sheriff Gore is denying the Second Amendment rights of San Diego County residents who want to carry concealed firearms outside of the home. Gore has set-up secret, undisclosed internal policies that result in denial of application after application from law-abiding, trained county residents who qualify under the state’s requirements for a CCW (concealed carry weapon) permit. His restrictive policies make it nearly impossible for most trained, law-abiding applicants with good character to obtain a CCW.

The National Rifle Association threatened legal action on Tuesday after Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp authorized the National Guard to confiscate guns and ammo ahead of Hurricane Irma.

“People need the ability to protect themselves during times of natural disaster,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action. “This dangerous order violates the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens and puts their lives at risk.”

Chicago’s attempt to squash a suit brought against the city by a gun shop has failed, after a federal judge said City Hall can’t sidestep the lawsuit accusing the city of unconstitutionally barring the shop from opening.

Second Amendment Arms sued the city of Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Superintendent of Police Eddie Johnson and City Clerk Anna Valencia for losses it alleges it suffered under the city’s prohibition of gun sales within the city from 2010 and 2014.

The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) applauds the introduction of H.R. 3668, the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act. Introduced by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC), the bill will reduce burdensome regulations on America’s sportsmen, enhance access to public lands and simplify the purchasing process for firearm suppressors.

“The SHARE Act is critical legislation that will protect America's hunters and recreational shooters and help preserve our outdoor heritage,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director, NRA-ILA. “This bill contains many important reforms to federal law that will remove unnecessary restrictions on our Second Amendment freedoms and hunting heritage.”

California has “universal” background checks, an “assault weapons” ban, a 10-day waiting period on gun purchases, gun registration requirements, gun confiscation laws, a “good cause” requirement for concealed-carry permit issuance, a ban on campus carry and myriad other gun controls. Yet at this very moment, the state’s Democrat politicians are focused on piling even more gun control on the backs of law-abiding citizens.

One of the most egregious controls currently under consideration is Democrat Assemblyman Kevin McCarty’s AB 424. That measure would guarantee that law-abiding teachers cannot shoot back if under attack.

AB 736, a bill that would have added to California’s anti-business and anti-second amendment climate failed passage out of the California State Assembly’s Committee on Appropriations.

AB 736 by Asm Mike Gipson (D- Inglewood) would have allowed the California Department of Justice to impose fines on Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL) for relatively minor mistakes.

But there are a lot of collectible firearms that do not cost $25,000. And there are many valid reasons for owning firearms in addition to collecting them. Is it not hypocritical for The Sun to condone and support the advertising of high value collectible firearms while advocating for the virtual elimination of private ownership of “regular” firearms by “regular” folks, and worth “regular” prices? I am pleased the The Sun would run any firearm advertising but it seems clear that money talks. I don’t know what a full page ad costs, but it is probably not cheap. Many, if not most, “regular" firearm owners would no more consider committing a crime with a gun than the person spending tens of thousands of dollars for one.

With the country’s suicide rate at an all time high, a gun rights advocate and college professor are offering some simple advice that may help in its prevention.

Second Amendment Foundation founder and president Alan Gottlieb and University of Washington professor and co-founder of Forefront Suicide Prevention Jennifer Stuber write about the complex problem in an opinion piece published by the Seattle Times.

The pair discuss working together on a public-education campaign — Washington’s Safer Homes, Suicide Aware — and say that simply locking up firearms and medications is a step in the right direction to helping prevent suicide.

Nearly 26,000 firearms have been surrendered to authorities in the last two months, in Australia’s first nationwide gun amnesty in more than 20 years.

The justice minister, Michael Keenan, says the haul is a “great result” and demonstrates Australians are serious about protecting themselves and their families, handing in an average of 464 firearms a day since 1 July.

Thousands of firearms have been collected in New South Wales (13,468), Queensland (7,000), Victoria (2,150), Tasmania (1,136) and South Australia (1,338).

The Santee City Council recently voted 5-0 to send Sheriff Bill Gore a letter requesting a change in his internal policy regarding the issuance of CCW (concealed carry weapon) permits.

Gore has set-up secret, undisclosed internal policies that result in denial of application after application from law-abiding, trained county residents who qualify under state law for a CCW.

Sheriffs throughout California’s 58 counties have unfettered discretion in determining a “good cause” policy when issuing CCWs. Most California sheriffs accept “self-defense” or “personal protection” as “good cause.” But not Sheriff Gore. Gore has been misleading the public by saying he is restrained by state law or court decisions. This is false.

Today, September 7, attorneys for the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA), filed the third in a series of planned lawsuits that challenge California’s recently enacted anti-gun restrictions collectively known as “gunmageddon” among gun owners.

This latest lawsuit, titled Villanueva v. Becerra, challenges the California Department of Justice’s (DOJ) recently enacted “assault weapon” regulations. These regulations were pushed through to finalize the implementation of new laws passed in 2016 (AB 1135 and SB 880) banning the sale, transfer, and possession of certain rifles and pistols equipped with magazine locking devices, typically known as “bullet buttons.”

MN: Why gun-rights advocates may — or may not — be really ticked at Republican lawmakers in Minnesota

Earlier this year, when the Minnesota legislative session ended, some of Minnesota’s most fierce gun rights advocates were not happy. Or at least it seemed that way.

“Stabbed in the back,” “betrayed,” and “ deceived,’’ were just a few of the words showing up on gun rights websites.

The displeasure was focused on the fate of two measures that had been floated at the Legislature. One would have exempted “qualified” Minnesotans from having to take a gun-training class and apply to a local law enforcement office for a right to carry permit.
