A Dallas police officer returning home from work fatally shot a neighbor on Thursday after she mistook his apartment for her own, police said.

Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall on Friday revealed the department's intent to charge the officer with manslaughter based on available information.

The officer, who hasn't been named, will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Submitter's note: She kills someone in his own apartment and gets a paid vacation. Sounds more like murder than manslaughter. Only the only ones get this kind of treatment.

With mass shootings becoming a growing issue in the U.S., many are left wondering how such tragedies could be prevented, especially in schools. While some lawmakers argue in favor of legislative solutions, others support more direct and immediate actions.

Following the Santa Fe school shooting earlier this year, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott set out to ensure the government took proper precautions. The governor welcomed ideas from different political camps as well as law enforcement and teaching professionals.

This week the nation was subjected to an embarrassing and undignified spectacle of obstructionist partisan politics surrounding the confirmation hearings of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court. The Democrat caucus, understanding that Judge Kavanaugh is an eminently qualified jurist with an upstanding reputation and that the votes likely exist to confirm him, abandoned the norms of the Senate and of civility and resorted to childish and temperamental theatrics.

A survivor of the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting said on Friday that she was “very concerned” about Brett Kavanaugh’s views on guns and the assault weapons ban, as she implored senators to consider voting against the U.S. Supreme Court nominee.

Aalayah Eastmond, a witness for the Democratic minority in the Senate Judiciary Committee, urged senators at Friday’s confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh to weigh the nominee’s record on the Second Amendment, after delivering an emotional recounting of the Parkland shooting, which brought Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, to tears.

Curtis has stated that he is a strong defender of the Second Amendment, but he also believes more should be done “to keep firearms out of the hands of violent individuals and the mentally ill.”

This bill, Curtis said, would put in place processes to prevent dangerous individuals from obtaining or possessing a firearm.

Other representatives weighed in on the bill, addressing topics such as allowing law enforcement to take action when a person is considered dangerous and improving criminal background checks.

Levi Strauss & Co. established its brand in the mid-19th century by selling durable clothing to working-class Americans. As Levi’s signature jeans gained popularity amongst a wider set in the middle of the last century, the pants came to symbolize American freedom. As Stanford Historian Niall Ferguson points out in his book, Civilization: The West and the Rest, during the Cold War, the American pants were so desirable behind the Iron Curtain that citizens would break any number of laws to obtain them. At one point the company even celebrated America’s armed heritage in a circa 1950 advertising brochure, “Levi’s Gallery of Western Guns & Gunfighters.”

The man who stabbed to death 22-year-old Dover resident Michael Barrett last year was justified in his use of deadly force under the law, according an investigation by state and local authorities released Friday. Barrett’s father disagreed with the finding, saying “they murdered my son.”

New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald’s investigation states Bailey Manning, 22, stabbed Barrett March 11, 2017, at 18 Edgewood Road in Durham, where Manning was living at the time with two roommates. Manning told investigators the details of the incident, stating he sold drugs to Barrett and used drugs with him and others prior to the deadly confrontation, and Manning’s story was corroborated by others.

On the night in question, waking from a drunken stupor and discovering that she had cooked dinner only for herself, he began beating and choking her. Flailing about with her hands to find something to hit him with, she grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the upper chest.

“I was afraid for myself and for my children,” she said. “I reached my limit and wanted to hit him with something, anything. If I had found a toy on the table, I would have hit him with that. I didn’t even look to see what was there. It happened to be a knife.”

Boot knives are popular for a number of reasons. They are great for self defense- after all, most people don’t look for knives hidden in boots. They are also handy if you are constantly working with a blade and bending over, and they have a unique cultural connotation as being the tool and weapon of the skilled, and trained outdoorsman or urban denizen. But how do you wear a boot knife?

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday kicks off today, but the savings won’t be as substantial as in years past. That’s due to the legislature’s decision to end state sales tax holidays in the final budget compromise from the special session. But local sales tax exemptions are still in effect.

Local Sales Tax Board Executive Director Roger Bergeron says that’s because the legislature may have just forgotten.

“The language in act one did not change the language in the specific exemption in regards to local governments.”

It should be noted that our nation has not witnessed an onslaught of individuals claiming they have used AR-15s or other commonly owned semiautomatic rifles for self-defense from 1,600 feet. In fact, deciding which guns can or cannot be used for self-defense based on effective range of rifles versus handguns is like deciding which car you will drive in a 35 mile per hour zone based on the vehicles’ top speed.

“I care deeply about public safety and it’s very important that we uphold Hawai‘i firearm laws for everyone’s benefit, ” Lt. Governor Chin said.

In July 2018 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with a Big Island resident that the Second Amendment affords the right to openly carry a gun in public for self-defense.

"Contrary to what Jon Tester says in Montana, he has supported the gun-control agenda of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer by voting in favor of gun control in Washington, D.C.," Chris Cox, executive director of the institute, said in a statement. "Montana gun owners deserve a trustworthy, consistent advocate for their Second Amendment freedoms. Jon Tester cannot be trusted to stand with President Trump and support our fundamental right to self-defense."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Rifles, muskets, long-bows and hand-grenades are inherently democratic weapons. A complex weapon makes the strong stronger, while a simple weapon — so long as there is no answer to it — gives claws to the weak. — George Orwell
