State Sens. Tom Casperson and Tonya Schuitmaker have introduced legislation focusing on the Second Amendment rights of foster parents.

A policy change by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) that took effect in 2015 requires all firearms legally possessed in foster homes be locked in a gun case or stored with a trigger-lock separate from ammunition.

Under this policy, firearms cannot be carried in a holster, even by someone who is licensed to carry a concealed weapon, or stored in any other safe manner.

With a company history spanning nearly 500 years—the longest of any extant gunmaker—Beretta has dabbled in practically every class of firearm. While the company also produces carbines (like the ARX100) and handguns (including the M9), to me, its shotgun line remains the hallmark. From handcrafted over-unders to über-reliable semi-automatics, Beretta arguably builds shotguns as well or better than anyone in the business. That is why I was so intrigued by its re-entrance into the home-defense shotgun realm with the Beretta 1301 Tactical in 2014—a noticeably compact, lightning-quick, 12-gauge semi-auto.

This week, the Wall Street Journal and NBC News released the results of a 1200 person survey that measured Americans’ opinions on a host of political issues. Included were a handful of questions that gauged Americans’ attitudes on gun rights and gun control. The results should serve to bolster the position of gun rights advocates and prompt bouts of anxiety among anti-gun activists and politicians.

Upholding the conviction of an Alabama man for unlicensed interstate gun trafficking, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit acknowledged the novelty of his argument that he was shielded by the First Amendment's prior restraint protection as well as the Second Amendment's right to bear arms.

That novelty was not enough to sway the judges, but the case—which involved the bitcoin sale of weapons on the dark web, a clandestine access-controlled section of internet—sparked noirish literary leanings in Judge Robin Rosenbaum, who authored the opinion.

"The Dark Web. For many, the name conjures images of a suspect shadow internet world where virtually anything can be bought for the right price," she wrote.

Armed militia groups are getting more and more involved in political protests. That can aggravate, even scare protesters, but the militia members themselves say they are misunderstood.

A social justice protest in Mill Creek Park in Kansas City, Missouri, last month drew several hundred people. But many seemed distracted. Will Jones, for instance, kept looking nervously over his shoulder, towards a couple dozen people dressed in camo, armed with guns, knives and bullet proof vests watching from the perimeter.

Greg Evers passed away on August 21, 2017, in a single-vehicle automobile accident near his home in Baker, Fla.

Greg Evers was a southern gentleman. By occupation he was a down-to-earth, God-fearing farmer.

This plain-spoken man with a southern drawl was equally at home in work clothes rolling around in the dirt trying to repair a broken tractor or in a suit and highly polished cowboy boots debating on the floor of Florida House or the Senate trying to do the right thing for Florida citizens.

I suppose that it is human nature, but most of us tend to do the same thing when we focus on a difficult task. We tend to pull the object in close to our bodies, about belly high, and bend over slightly to focus on what we are doing. That seems to get the job done for most of the tasks that we encounter in life, but it can get you killed in a gunfight.

Our general plan in a gunfight is to stop the threat as quickly as possible. But then Murphy and his unavoidable law takes charge of the situation. We suddenly find that we have to reload or clear some sort of malfunction. We have to do it quickly if we expect to survive this deadly encounter.

The NRA has long warned its members about the medical profession’s institutional bias against guns and their owners. This politically-motivated position – backed by flimsy and often misinterpreted “studies” – has even resulted in patients being denied care for refusing to discuss gun ownership with healthcare providers. This discrimination, in turn, has provoked legislation to prevent doctors from injecting their politics into the exam room.

There’s nothing more disconcerting than waking up to conflict from a deep slumber. Most people have experienced this to some degree, whether it’s just a bump in the night or actually an intruder prowling around the house. Either way, there’s nothing like the peace of mind knowing that a firearm is immediately handy. Protection of life and property can’t be efficiently accomplished with a baseball bat.

On Sept. 1, U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan introduced H.R. 3668, the Sportsman’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act (SHARE Act), a wide-ranging package of legislation aimed at promoting Second Amendment rights and America’s outdoor sporting traditions.

Different versions of the SHARE Act have been pending for a number of years, and the legislation has passed the U.S. House of Representatives during each of the last three sessions of Congress, most recently in February 2016. Few, however, expected that then-President Obama would have signed the bill into law.

A jury has acquitted a former California college cheerleader of most charges in a bloody fight at a dorm party, deciding that he stabbed his attacker in self-defense.

Jurors found Victor Perez, a 21-year-old San Francisco State University student, not guilty of multiple felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and assault causing great bodily injury, said San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi on Friday.

We're seeing a new round of activity in the comment sections on articles about Mike Strickland's felony prosecution and conviction for brandishing a gun during a PDX-Black Lives Matter event in Portland. You can read my original report on this here, and Mark Walters' commentary on the subject here.

Much has changed since those reports, so it's time for an update.

“Schools with ‘zero tolerance’ policies against school fights must nevertheless apply the Georgia statute that gives students the right to argue self-defense as justification for the fight,” according to the Supreme Court’s summary of the case.

“The court confirmed that the blind enforcement of zero-tolerance fighting policies, which do not consider a student’s right to self-defense and subject victim children to expulsion from school, are unlawful,” said Mike Tafelski of Georgia Legal Services, the student’s attorney.

Short-Barrel Pistol Grip Shotguns – Thanks, But…

A few manufacturers have found exploitable loopholes in the National Firearms Act of 1968 and – to the delight of some – are “thumbing their noses” at the authorities and producing short-barrel pistol grip shotguns. They’re marketed for the home defense set, and a coterie of tactical accessories is sure to follow.

A number of people are certainly excited about the Mossberg Shockwave and the Remington Marine Magnum, hailing them as self-defense implements par excellence.

USVI: Amid Hurricane Irma, Loesch And Carlson Team Up For Second Night Of Smearing USVI Gov Over Non-Existent Gun Seizures

Apparently, 10 minutes of smearing a U.S. governor coping with the catastrophic Hurricane Irma was not enough for Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Last night, he teamed up with Dana Loesch, an uninformed NRA spokeswoman, for another round of baselessly accusing the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands of seizing guns during Irma.

While I can concede that access to guns during Irma may be a legitimate issue to NRA members, this five-minute discussion added nothing to anyone’s understanding of the situation. The whole thrust was to add fears and smears to a community already suffering.

Gun owners in the southeast, Texas and other areas where the summer is producing flooding and record storms can benefit from some timely advice on gun maintenance and restoration from flooding, and how to handle submerged ammunition, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) offers a very useful guide on the subject titled "Guidance on Firearms That Have Been Submerged or Exposed to Extensive Amounts of Water." CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb advises anyone whose valuable firearms have been affected by flooding to get a copy.

This week, the city of Tucson, Arizona agreed to repeal their firearm destruction ordinance. This decision came in response to the recent state Supreme Court ruling that struck down the city's firearm destruction policy as a violation of state law that prohibits local governments from regulating the ownership, licensing, or use of firearms.

The city of Tucson ignored this Arizona state law 12 years ago when the Tucson city council passed an ordinance allowing for the destruction of firearms.
