A sheriff's deputy responding to a home invasion shot the homeowner in the neck Thursday because he refused to drop his gun, authorities said.

...

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting and the sheriff's office will investigate the home invasion, Watson said. He said the homeowner is black and the two deputies are white.

Tough call ! But there's a kernel of fact in this tale anyone calling for police assistance in an armed confrontation situation needs to know. Responding officers are already "amped up" with an active-shooter call. Callers need to keep 911 on the line and advised of their location in the structure or conflict area.

Hard for cops in contact to discern the "good from the bad" in a lot of situations where adrenaline, darkness, confinement and limited sight lines prevail. Innocents need to give themselves the best chance of survival they can. Obeying instructions promptly is one.
