"Despite strong words from members of a state gun lobby, Culpeper Town Manager Brannon Godfrey offered no apology last night for an e-mail that the group's leader called 'condescending especially from a public servant.'"
"Philip Van Cleave of Midlothian, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, told the Town Council that Godfrey's reply to VCDL member Mike Stollenwerk's e-mail addressing a gun ban at Yowell Meadow Park was inappropriate."
"That reply, directed to 'Herr Stollenwerk,' was written in German and said, 'Many thanks for serving as our moral conscience. Culpeper would be lost without the patronizing guidance of the people like you in Northern Virginia.'" ... |

Since Herr Godfrey is the 'state' in this case, the LAST thing HE should have been doing is quoting from the Nazis. It just seems to me like he is projecting his own feelings of superiority in a way that screams hypocrite. This sign should have been changed immediately and the website should also LOUDLY proclaim the incorrect sign verbiage as having no force of law and wrong. |

Something in the Declaration of Independence, I think, about "redress of grievances." Ridiculing citizen's concerns is kinda what King George did. Oh, wait, those were his subjects. Didn't turn out well for him when they decided to be subjects no longer. |

Town Manager Godfrey's nasty email indicates that there was more to the sign than an inadvertent oversight. This was a deliberate attempt to impose an unlawful gun ban. Things should get interesting at election time.

TO REMEMBER |
| After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. — Alexis de Tocqueville |
